Rare elements should be hard to find, and I don't want any tools that take me, for instance, from orbit to a Polonium quarry.

Hard, and time consuming, are not the same thing. As it stands you can learn all the mechanics, learn how to read the scanner, find the perfect planet, and STILL spend hours not finding anything. Not because you have done anything wrong, but because you are unlucky. What muppet thought that would make for entertaining gameplay I don't know, but he should be fired...

I like it. I'd prefer if mats dropped a little less rarely, perhaps. I'm not sure how random it really is, we're in the early investigation stages. Once more people have found stuff, we'll start to have a bigger picture of where to look.

Therein lies the real problem. Unless you are a full out MMO, which this isn't, you shouldn't design based around community information sharing. You should have in game tools to be able to at least narrow down where to find things. The wave scanner is great for while you are on planet, however, unless you already know specifically from external means where to go, it's blind luck. With so many planets in game to land on to have a look, it because extremely tedious. The only good thing is, we have bookmarks, so when we finally find what we are looking for, we can bookmark it. However, if you are like me and despise the mode in which to find these planetary materials, it's simply not enough to be able to record what I've found for later use. It basically forces me to go into explorer mode. Which, space exploration, is already something that inevitably bores me because there just isn't enough 'things' to find. So imagine how bored I get driving around in the SRV for days on end looking at stale terrain.

I may find this not particularly tedious as I'm not looking for particular materials. I visit planet surfaces as I enjoy driving on them. Any materials I gather are a bonus for when I may need them.

Just tedious.

This should not be a simple drive in SRV 500km straight and listen for PING on the scanner. There should be 'something' more. Less random, easier to find, but with more efforth (i mean gameplay, go to exact location, do something, find someone)

Agreed - just tedious. The novelty died a long while back and now I am dreading needing planetary resources.

It is just too random. Have surface scanners highlight regions for certain resources and amp the drop rate for them there, or something. Right now it is too cryptic and too unpredictable, resulting in disgustingly long boring stretches to find just a couple of resources you need and a pile you don't.

Vapid, unimaginative, lacking, insulting, weak, dull, repetitive, meaningless and obviously rushed.

I have more, but meh.

I find it tedious.

I find it tedious because there is nothing I can do that affects my chance of getting the materials.

If there was some form of skill involved it would at least be more engaging. Such as using specific scanning equipment to locate the materials you are after instead of just driving from one rock to the other while blasting heavy metal music into my own ears to not fall asleep while rolling across the endless waste of a planet surface.

Why can't we use the Detailed Surface Scanners on our ships to scan a large area of the planet surface, e.g. 500kmx500km area, or even larger... or better yet... the larger area you scan the less reliable your data is. This way we could fly closer to planet then use surface scanner... if we detect traces of whatever material we are after we can fly lower and perform another scan... oh, this time you got no traces, so you keep scanning parts of the surface, or fly a bit higher up and do a new scan.

This way we could locate which areas have the materials we need... then we could land and deploy our SRV. An SRV that should have upgrade options, such as detectors that specifically search for elements... or manmade objects... or have better accuracy and resolution on the scan at the cost of the scanning arc being smaller (e.g. only scans 90 degrees in front of you rather than 120).

With the above suggestions we could configure a ship that is specifically tasked for this purpose, to find materials or elements. It would be a type of industrial / scientific ship with scanning equipment. That wouldn't prevent others from just landing somewhere and go find random materials or elements... however, it would allow us to target specific materials that we are after rather than this crapshoot we are doing now.

Nothing makes me more frustrated and bored than being subjected entirely to RNG and just having to waste time... yes, waste time... rolling around planet surfaces hoping the next place I drive to will have the stuff I need. It's not even a grind... a grind implies you are putting work into something... wasting time and rolling dice is NOT work.

It's TEDIOUS.

Make the game more engaging. Give us tools that allow us to specialize towards the tasks we are trying to accomplish in the game.

Make the Detail Surface Scanner have an actual, logical purpose.

If I can come up with this stuff while I am simultaneously writing a work related email then someone who is paid to make the game should be perfectly able to come up with even better, more engaging and fun ways to remove the tedious from the game.

Especially in 3302...

So 80% thinks this is a pain in the behind... Back to the drawing board FD...
The results of any forum poll are skewed before they even start, unless distributed via a mail shot that reaches all customers/users they are largely pointless. This is because most people who come to forums are there to complain; the folks that are happy are off playing or getting on with other areas of their lives.

Over 1.6 million copies of ED have been sold, yet the same handful of posters are here every day whining about changes in the patch.

Unfortunately that's true. However, you'd be hard pressed to make me believe even the non-participants find this challenging. Which was my major point, it's not challenging, even if you don't find it tedious. If you do find it challenging, I'd like to suggest that you've never experienced what challenge actually is. Don't lose sight of what I created the poll for, to validate my opinion, not change the game (even if that would be incredible). [haha]

I like the cut of your jib.
