A fun & highly varied evening.

This is why I love playing as a new commander (I deleted my 18 months of progress when 2.1 dropped).

I am currently in Naunin, helping the Wolves of Jonai in their Community Goal.....& am learning the hard way which ships are better at mining (I learned the hard way that I shouldn't have "upgraded" from an Adder to a Viper, for starters ;) ). Other than that, I am *loving* mining.....can't believe I never did it in my former life!

So I am at the innermost ring of Naunin A4, collecing gold into my "all too small" cargo hold, when I suddenly get a "Mission Critical Update". "Odd", I think, as I don't have any current missions. So I check my inbox, & find that the controlling faction of this system has *offered* me a job, finding some missing structural regulators. I have a whole day to do the job, so decide to take it. I do think its *really* cool how you can get missions away from the mission board, though, & I hope it is something they further expand upon.

I finally fill up my cargo rack (with 8t of gold.....pffft ;) ), & decide to head to the Low RES for a bit of bounty hunting before heading "back to the barn". Almost bit off more than I could chew, though, when I took on a Master NPC in a Viper MkIV (my Viper MkIII was kitted out for mining, not combat). Anyway, with the help of security, I was finally able to take him down....though not after a long slog and a fair bit of damage to my ship (had no point defense....oops).

So I get back to McLeod Hub and turn in my gold & my bounty-earning myself almost 150,000Cr (trust me, as a "new" pilot that's a lot of money) & Cordial relations with the controlling faction. I then installed chaff and point defense before heading out to the local Nav Beacon.

I got interdicted by a cocky, harmless NPC in a DB Scout. I was prepared to make short work of him, but when I deployed my burst lasers, my thrusters and life support shut down.....oops! Things got a bit tense as he stripped my shields whilst I tried to figure out which modules I could safely shut down to restore my critical systems.

Fortunately a lone security vessel came to my assistance, & we were able to consign this guy's ashes to the void.
I was able to get to the Nav Beacon without further incident.

I then scanned the nav beacon, & ascertained that what I was looking for was last seen around Naunin A3. So I quickly headed out there, just as a "to do" was starting around the Nav Beacon. However, when I got to Naunin A3, I learned that the items were on the planet's surface....so I had to head back to the station & outfit my ship with a bay for a planetary vehicle.

Then, with vehicle in tow, I narrowed down the location of the supply dump within which the items were located, then used my wave scanner to further pinpoint the location (sadly driving past another Point of Interest En Route).

I found what I was looking for, plus a couple of cannisters of computer components for good measure. Then, just as I got aboard my ship, I get a mission critical update saying that I will get a nice fat bonus if I can get the stuff back to them in only 5 minutes. Well I thought that was going to be impossible, but I actually managed it with about 1 minute in hand.

So what started off as a night devoted to mining actually turned into a highly varied learning experience.

Apologies for the long post, but it was just something I wanted to share!

Apologies for the long post, but it was just something I wanted to share!

Why apologize? Your post was great!

Mining is the nazz, I love it. I mine in a Cobra IV and pull in just enough ore to bring in 600-900k per run in a pristine ring. Now that things are a bit tougher, I feel a little bit excited when I make my return trip -- all that hard work, I've got to make this run count!

I, too, have dropped in on some low-res zones in my combat rig just so I could help FSS waste some suckers and get a feel for where I am, combat-wise.

Happy to see that you're having fun. After initially rage-quitting, I've adapted and am enjoying the new patch. I've still got some runs to do tonight, so anything could happen, but I'm feeling confident.

Now every time I see another 'hate the way the game now forces you to do things you don't want to blah blah blah' type post, I will think of this.

Thanks :)

No problem. Never could understand the people who "grind" the game myself. I feel like they don't really get the spirit of the game!

I'm "grinding" right now so I can upgrade to a bigger miner (I'm going for FDS), but I'm not focusing on it. Just focusing on the adventure instead :)

I love those random missions. Like the.."ive been looking for you,.follow my wake so we can talk". Then you would get the option to betray the faction whose mission you were on and bring cargo to somewhere else for more credits. I used to get them all the time before Horizions, now I haven't got a single one.

Thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity, what the reason for deleting your progress and starting again?

Well the overhaul in 2.1 was so big, that I was very keen to experience the changes through "fresh eyes". Plus, based on my beta testing, I feared that I had a combat rank that far exceeded my actual abilities......so decided to go back to harmless so I could "grow" alongside the new AI!

They are rarer now, and no longer require you to jump out of super-cruise, but they do still appear, apparently.

Good thinking.

These were taken out with 1.6/2.1. You now get updates via the communications tab instead.

Yes, you're right. What I meant was that the Counter-mission thing (where you get to betray a faction), still exists, but now comes via the communications tab, rather than from dropping out of Super-cruise.

If people grind because they enjoy it, then more power to them......its the people who grind then complain about it here on these forums that ticks me off! ;).

Well, I spent the night feeding my whittle humans and getting them all hyped up with performance enhancers. Then, I got a message regarding a tip off.
Fun times.
Been using some ships I hadn't used in a very long time as well and thinking of designating specific roles for each ship. That'll keep me amused for months, lol.
Keep seeing lots of new things and can get a bit distracted from my original plan which is great.
:)

just a guess but, its probably an OCD thing, and some people feel the need to complete new content as fast as they can (it drives them crazy to see it waiting there, just like needing to flip a light switch). Sure, it may not be in the spirit of the game, but sometimes its helps when we understand why other people are acting like they are. That way, we can try to understand their feelings :)

hope that helped.

also, great post Marc_Hicks

+1 rep. Mission updates can sometimes be fun, however the ones offering a bonus if you deliver in "0m 0s" leaves me somewhat ???.

Been working great for me. I haven't done much sector jumping... just mining rings in my local sector with my dedicated miner -- no offense, just a Cobra with lots of evasion and shields. I did get a "tasty cargo" message once when I left the rings, but I immediately jumped to the next sector and back without further problems. When I turned in my metals I didn't feel one bit bad about it.

The only thing I'm down about is it's time to go to bed :p I guess my FDS purchase will have to wait until tomorrow.

Glad folks are having fun. I know I am.
