Congratulations to the fuel rats

It's about Frontier not making all group or player mechanics available to all groups in a way that doesn't involve direct developer involvement on their behalf.
Ok, but here's the thing. The Fuel Rats have devoted their time and effort to rescuing 10.000 CMDRs! 10.000 CMDRs who would otherwise be looking at a rebuy screen. They have contributed more to this game than any group I can think of.
Some chap shot up a fuel ray recently. It's now been published as an official galnet, universe wide story. When it originally ran, it included the offending Cmdrs name, which goes against all policies frontier have stated until now regarding naming and shaming.
That is certainly a valid point.

Did they remove the CMDR name? Anyway it's ingame, naming and shaming doesn't really exist there, have you seen the most wanted list? Is that naming and shaming too?

PS this sounds like I don't see the problem, I do... But it's an interesting discussion.

Its not about jealousy (my congratulations to the rats was genuine, regardless of what people seem to have decided to think).

The problem with that is, every single decal has to be manually viewed, determined if it's appropriate, and then added to the game when the next update hits, (You can't just add one willy nilly, because it'll have to patched to every users game files) Doing that will take a lot of man hours, especially if people send a file in a wrong format that's too big, as a JPEG when PNG is wanted etc. So chances are they'll have to charge for this, like the Warframe devs do, and then you'll get the whiny buggers, I imagine you'll be one too, no offence, that'll complain with "But the fuel rats got theirs for free! So we should too" like you're basically doing right now.

So tell you what, you really want your own decal in the game? Start a group, and make a huge impact on the game and the community, maybe make a huge merc group that'll assist traders or something, and maybe then you might.

Maybe when we walk around ships, OP can stick a Iron Maiden or Kim Kardashian poster in his cabin :D But
That's exactly what I wouldn't do. And I'd hate to see such stuff on the outside of ships. I am yet annoyed by the flags from the 21st century. Give us ship's, planets, manufacturers, in game faction stickers.

Fuel rats are the ADAC/AAC/AAA of the galaxy. That's OKAY! Even on the ships hull! Maybe else the Explorer escort group (forgot the name, sry) but that's it.

I'm... so confused. If i'm being a pirate that wants to attack two philanthropic players, I've got only one of two things in mind:

A) I'm roleplaying and I'd love publicity.
B) I'm a griefer.

Naming and shaming applies to the forums and I don't think the forum rules apply to in-game content.
Whether or not it should is another debate all by itself.

Exactly, naming and shaming rules exist only on the Forum, no such rules over on reddit and FD are prevalent there. When you sign up to this Forum and agree to it's terms, one thing you agreed to is no N/S on the forum.

There is nothing in the EULA for the game that protects you from being named in game, and I'm guessing that includes Galnet. (In fact it's quite clear that Frontier are sole owners of all content, story and history of anything that happens in game, they can do whatever they like with it.)

Although ... the original article was submitted to the Galnet Submissions thread so, even tho' it ended up in game, it went via the forums and shouldn't strictly have been allowed. Bit of a faux pas there if you ask me.

I'm still suggesting the CMDR that opened fire on the fuel rats would be happy with this... If you roleplay a villain, you want attention to your villainy, most of the time.
I can't see why he would bounty hunt a /fuel rat/ if not for infamy.

I get what your saying, but it runs counter to some news stories prior which were redacted by FDEV prior to publication, or simply not published because they listed Commanders names in a similar light

Well the problem is that it's a player submitted story. If it really happened I don't see an issue. Don't do such things if you don't want to become infamous. But what if I just make this up? What if it didn't really happen and someone just doesn't like you?

What if you reported it to Frontier as harassment?

I can definitely see how diplomacy was broken.

Grats guys, its a sweet looking decal - unlike many of the posters i've read here I can't see why we should care who gets decals and who doesn't, it'd be nice if they implemented some in-game skins (why isn't the piracy skin a reward for piracy for example) but this is rocking.

Congrats!

This.

There seems to be this image that a few men joined together, gave themselves an arbitrary name and got given special treatment.

These chaps and chappettes have put what amounts to an ungodly amount of time, effort and both real-life/in-game resources in to this. It oozed initiative and to this day contributes to every commander that gets stranded and saved, and contributes overall by adding another facet to "what makes Elite". Having the fuel rats there is like having an unintended but completely awesome extra feature to the game.

If they'd been given beam lasers that deal triple damage, I'd have a bone or two to pick. But a sticker for their hard work? I think I can accept "favouritism" in this case, though in my mind it's only favouritism when people are treated differently despite the same efforts. When someone else comes up with a CMDR-saving service and can say they've prevented 10,000 rebuy screens, I'll let you complain about the lack of sticker. Otherwise...stop getting your knickers in a twist over a damn sticker. I haven't done the work for it, neither has OP, so let them wear it out of pride - and put a nod of respect their way if you see a ship sporting it.

Yeah this would work but it could be too late already. Maybe I missed the article or got already killed by a few hundred angry fuel rats :)

The thing is: Generally I support the idea of naming infamous players on galnet, as long as we can make sure that it doesn't get abused. Maybe they should ask the CMDR in question next time.

I really don't want to see what the decal for the "Teabaggers" would look like. I really don't. Ish.

I've got an example for ya if you want. Let me just see if it's in my "Elite pics" directory or my "highly unusual preferences" directory...

That picture isn't just a photoshop job? Because... that doesn't look like FD quality artwork. The texture is awful and has a really hideous alpha channel....
