That is quite interesting. I doubt that it's a player. What would be the point of doing your harvesting in CN, before 2.1.

NPCs should really start to post their findings in this thread (feature request FD).:p

Canonn have xbox players, I don't see why we can't have NPC's - come, NPC's, join the Canonn; post on our site, chat on our Discord, contribute to the lovely threadnaut (with pics or it didn't happen).

right, so, after a few more tests, for those canyon flying looking for barnacles:
- small rocks are visible in distances < 350mts
- large rocks are visible in distances < 1km
- barnacles are visible in distances < 4.5km

That basically means, any flying altitude above 1km will make the ground look clear and every bright spot will be either a barnacle or a crashed ship, definitely something of interest, but also flying above 3.5km will make barnacles visible almost only just below your location. This is the rendering distance, regardless the graphic settings BUT with maximum model draw distance, definitely gets better with higher resolutions. For 2km of altitude, considering the hypotenuse 4.5km the maximum ground distance will be 4.03km, that is when the barnacles are mostly distinguishable without any doubt while also giving you a view on top of the canyon walls.

I'd like to confirm that barnacles are not located below 100mts of the nearby surface (the depth of the crater or canyon they are in).. could someone highlight any barnacle in deeper locations?

AFAIK the rendering distances depend massively on your graphics card and settings.

then I'll keep doing canyon flying, because there is no SC at that distance.

to maximise the chances of spotting any single pixel, I was flying without HUD (takes 40% of the screen), I might have missed any POI by doing that way.. oh god..

POI circles disappear from your HUD below about 2 Km, so you wont have missed any

Just coz I'm too far away, can someone please take a shot of the stats for Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 2 for me? I have Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 1 but wouldn't mind seeing the other.

In other news, I'm hoping I'm "onto" a set of criteria for Barnacle planets, since I'm now looking at various landable moons and after 3 hours tonight, am yet to find a single one that doesn't match my criteria. It's not based on anything new I think, guess I'll fly around scanning and getting more explo credits for now.

Wish I could use that technique in VR without getting a really bad neck! :)

Hi LZ
did you receive your new VR, or still waiting?

I found a crashed ship on a planet in the California nebula. It was a little condor. I dunno how it got out there, it must only have a jump range of 10ly or something like that (or none at all). It was non persistent.

I have some screeies if any wants to see them?

Thanks,

Omate.

Did it have a pilot's seat???

Did we invite Jacques to join?

can't now, will do later. these two you mention are very similar to the one in California that is a few posts above.

Here you go:

Sorry, don't have a complete scan, but I'm sure they have no atmos, no volcanism, 75% metal etc..

Jacques cannot wear a tinfoil hat, it interferes with his own thought process as he is AI... very sad.

Ah, good point! But I always viewed the tinfoil hot as an optional bit of protective apparel; rather like the duralium underwear and hand-knitted goat-hair socks. Besides, I heard recently he's not really AI, but a cybernetically enhanced former pilot-just enhanced to the point where there's not much human left.

Perhaps we should make Jacques an honorary Canonn member; he may not be a scientist but he has gone on a long enough journey that, should he survive & be found again, should get him an honorary Master's degree in astrophysics. And barperson/being/entity skills would be useful at the monthly meetings- you know, when the hobnobs have run out and LZ gets a bit lary.

Oh, just had a thought- must make a note, I really must get a new set of duralium underwear, and this time pay for the Extra Luxury set with appropriately placed joints, I seem to have developed a strange walk.

arg, landed in shame..

After 22h of canyon flying this planet (where I think I actually managed to fly all the craters) I finally decided to head back and get a surface scanner (something I forgot to bring the other day). Truth revealed, even if this planet looks like could host a barnacle, turned out that it is either too hot and has volcanic activity. The rest of the system was perfect match for my barnacle filter search. So.. I need to find another target.

Just in case someone else is interested, I'm looking for 400km (aprox) high metal content worlds, with < 0.0010 times earth mass, below 350K, no atmosphere, no volcanic activity and 67/32 rock/metal distribution.

So should all barnacle searching be done on extremely small high metal planets in a somewhat habital temp, cruising between 2 and 4km so the POI shows up on radar? Have all of them been on such worlds so far?

I've scanned a lot of worlds in my search for Cadmium to finally get to the rest of the nebula - I've found nothing but nonsense random non-persistant poi's. I've been leaning towards earth mass (as close as i can find anyway) since the extremely low grav planets tend to not be very buggy friendly.

On my old graphics card, I could crash into entire mountains before they within rendering distance.

LOL - That remembers me when I played an Age of Conan MMORPG few years back with my two friends. They had quite nice gaming PCs and I was stuck with my very old one. AoC had very nice graphics and once there was a situation (communication via Team Speak):
Friend 1: WOW!! What a view!
Friend 2: Yeah, indeed!
Me: What? What are you talking about?
F1: Heh, don't you see it?
F2: Right, his PC is low spec. There's a great city on the other side of the canyon we just stopped by...
Me: What canyon??

xD

Im at california Nebular now looking straight at barnard's loop it must be what the Barnacles logo is referring too. ie we come from here. didnt MB say that other nebula would give clues to the origin? if so does it mean from california nebula you can tell they are from barnard's loop? also don't the so called pillars of curation reside near there? Im still shell searching at the moment anyone else over at Barnard's loop searching at the moment?
