Elite Dangerous is Done For

Okay, so here's the facts. Frontier is losing large portions of their community by the day. Their forums aren't a place to have "discussion" anymore, it's a place for complaining.

Elite is currently a grind hell that is mind numbing boring and is just not what a game should be.

There are arriving titles like No Man's Sky, Star Citizen etc that appear they will blow them out of the water. Star Citizen is far deeper and contains much more content even in its early stages.

So what's your guys opinion, do you think Ed has a chance in the same pond as these other titles? Personally, I'm calling it an officially dead game within a litte over a year.

Im not sure citing games that are either delayed, or crap AND delayed is a good idea when citing potential opposition.

The best sign that a game is doing well are people warning you of an oncoming apocalypse. :D

Considering I've still been going back to Elite III every now and then just for the heck of it I don't think Elite will die any time soon. It's only one of the oldest gaming franchises out there.
Oh well, one day even the kids will understand. :)

As for no mans sky, yeah, I am totally looking forward to it. I will play it. Will it replace Elite? Not really, it's a completely different concept and game. It's like a futuristic sci-fi novel that I will enjoy for a while while Elite is something that stays with me.
As for Star Citizen? Well, I personally see it as Hollywood equivalent of Elite. Louder, shinier and perhaps a bit bolder.

For me however there is just no replacement to our home galaxy, the bubble and everything Elite represents. All the other games are good, no doubt, but Elite is home. :)

Ramble Ramble. Back to my morning coffee...

Oh really.....

That said, if it dies it dies. Nothing we can do to stop it. I think its a pretty natural emotion to have, that once something is finished for you, you want it to be finished for everyone else. It doesnt work like that though, people are different so whilst ED might be over and dead for you, you wont get the same opinion from everyone else.

If its actually finished for you then the best thing for you is to not dwell on it, just go play something that you do enjoy instead of wasting your time telling people that the game they enjoy and are playing is actually finished.

These aren't facts, this is your opinion, and one that is unsubstantiated in parts.

I am seeing more commanders online, post 2.1, and a number of my friends have picked up the game again, after taking a bit of a break. Anecdotally at least, "the sands of time" appear to be running alright - backwards. Frontier must be hating that. :)

Every major update, folks are claiming Frontier have to undo all the changes or the end of the world will happen, and yet - it doesn't.

Yep, that's true. I am seeing more living people in Open, in the last 2 weeks, than I have seen in Open in the 6 months prior to 2.1 being released. Claims of the demise of Elite: Dangerous have been greatly exaggerated (again).

Facts? any numbers?

& what is your background etc for understanding the bigger picture of such things?

I would like to know, since it seems you are well informed.

Line 1: Complaining about people complaining
Line 2: Hmm, never played earlier Elite games - they will show you grinding (FE2 & FFE especially), this is nothing and far more accessible to new players than any previous Elite game apart from the original.
Line 3: No Mans Sky, not the same game or genre as Elite, the only thing they have in common is that spaceflight is in both. I may buy it cos it's different but I will always come back here. Star Citizen doesn't even have a firm release date other than "2016".

Line 4: Of course it does, ED is developing all the time and will be able to compete with both those games with ease.

Citation needed, and remember Steam Spy does not have the details of EVERY player...

In your opinion. It's only a grind if you are constantly striving for some mythical "end game" which Elite Doesn't have. I play the game A LOT, I'm certainly not a casual player, my experience with this game has not been a "grind hell" as the trail I blaze is an organic one, flitting from content to content as the whim takes me. I find simply existing in this galaxy to be more fulfilling and fun than the inexorable level grind of the many other MMOs I've played.

Furthermore who are YOU to say what the game should be? You represent 1 person. Elite Dangerous has over 1,500,000 active accounts. You certainly don't speak for them. In fact the combined user base of these forums and the various subreddits don't even make up 1% of the player base. In "fact" the combined members of both places are so statistically insignificant as can be completely discounted out of hand.

There are arriving titles like No Man's Sky, Star Citizen etc that appear they will blow them out of the water. Star Citizen is far deeper and contains much more content even in its early stages.

Star Citizen is an Tech Demo, not a game. I am a backer of SC have played it and found it to be buggy, with an awful flight model and a tiny amount of content in objective comparison. It doesn't have an economy yet, only 1 solar system and currently is a collection of disparate parts thrown into one package for testing. It. Is. Not. A. Game. No Man's Sky while being similar is not the same and to date has only been played by journalists and industry insiders, you have no idea what that game is going to be like as you haven't been able to play and compare the games. So you are basing your opinion on... What exactly? Yes yes everyone is entitled to an opinion, that doesn't mean it is automatically right and an opinion based on nothing but subjective feelings is utterly worthless.

So what's your guys opinion, do you think Ed has a chance in the same pond as these other titles? Personally, I'm calling it an officially dead game within a litte over a year.

I wish I had your amazing crystal ball and these nebulous "facts" you provide no citation for. In "fact" you have presented no facts whatsoever, just a nebulous subjective opinion based on... well frankly based on nothing at all. In my opinion Elite will continue to grow and live a long and happy life. I hope that Star Citizen will launch and be an amazing game too, I look forward very much to playing it and Squadron 42, and while the art style of No Man's Sky is kind of off putting to me, I will certainly give it a college try and will not begrudge those who love it their enjoyment. I certainly won't doom and gloom on ANY of the space games coming and will only base my opinion on experience and facts. Not knee jerk responses and doomsayers.

Another click bait post.

Interesting that the OP makes these statements in the initial post and then you hear nothing from him/her.

I smell troll.

I'm disappointed this thread has gone on for so long without someone pointing out that instead of "here's the facts" it should be "here are the facts".

I now predict the demise of this forum.

Elite needs storyline development. That's what's missing from the game and what would make it truly great.

This month on Galnet: Nothing happened.

i think ED is fabulous fun! it has a great pedigree, with an enthused and talented development team, that continue to think big. the game has excellent prospects, for those patient enough, to enjoy the peaks and weather the showers.

i think NMS will be awesome once it is out, pre-ordered it as soon as i could, the game has great potential, outside of the visuals and control features, i think it will share much of the same qualities we have in ED.

i think i prefer the idea of SC more than the apparent reality, i don't think i'm willing to wear trousers with pockets deep enough to support playing SC with any kind of comfort. of course that's just my opinion.

people have been saying elite was dying since beta.. very likely the same people that were saying SC was going to kick its ass. well, ED has been flying its ass all over the galaxy, and it hasn't even been cheekily squeezed yet, let alone kicked by a foot still having problems with getting stuck in floors.

if you are really struggling with the game or loosing focus, may i suggest you give House of the Dying Sun a look. great little game just out, it isnt Elite, but it might give you a nice little break from elite that will allow you too see it in a different light.

How's Eve Online doing these days as I can remember the threads from December 2003 claiming it was going to die due to castor. At that point we were lucky to break 1k players on a Sunday night...
