How's Eve Online doing these days as I can remember the threads from December 2003 claiming it was going to die due to castor. At that point we were lucky to break 1k players on a Sunday night...
Actually, interesting you should ask..
If I want true drama, and complaint threads in an all you can eat buffet, then I grab the sweet and salt popcorn, and spend half an hour in their forum.. That is true drama.
When CCP take FDEV's stance on having a persistent universe, and allow private sessions, then EVE may almost be the perfect space adventure game. BUT CCP won't, and as such I'll never touch EvE again with a 1000-AU barge pole. Unwanted player interaction in EvE kills its potential.. Yet it's the fundamental foundation on all it's built on. Lovely structure, but the foundations of the tower of Pisa, they want a niche player base, and they have it.
Me? EvE is excellent for drama, popcorn, and exemplifying exactly how to make a fantastic game into something I avoid like the plague.
Now for ED: it has its flaws, but it sure cements over the warts of EvE. ED is a game I want to play for that exact reason.
When you get a cross between EvE and ED, would be the only time I'll test the grass on the other side of the fence. As ED develops I dare say that ED will be the game other developers will look at for "goods", and "bads". Give DB and FDEV their credit for being the first to try, to lead the way, and to be the ones brave enough to walk the minefield. Everyone else will pretend to be brave yet follow, and claim to be 'pioneers' by avoiding FDEVs fails, and absorbing successes.
