Can you talk me into buying a Hotas Warthog?

Don't buy a Warthog for this game.

I have one, it's in the cupboard for using with DCS A-10 flight sim. It is a replica of that planes joystick after all.

For Elite I use a Logitech 3D Extreme Pro because it has the twist axis. But I also use pedals for Up, down, left and right thrusters. I use the joystick twist for yaw control.

If you get a Warthog your losing an entire Axis of control. Just because it costs more doesn't mean it's best for this game.

You have good points.

I bought it for DCS A10 in the first place. But I use it with all other flight games i have.

If you dont have a rudder set up, I wouldn't recommend it.
I was never really a fan of the stick twist for yaw anyway.
I use almost every button on the both units for something. I wouldn't want to have to put yaw in there too.

But the cost is directly related to the Hall Sensors and Doomsday Ready Construction.
I have the X52 Pro prior to the WH. I tried going back and it just doesnt have that sturdy feel.

Steering (pitch/roll) overcompensation isn't an issue with the WH since it takes a little more 'oompf' to move it.

But the X sticks are my second choice hands down. Never had any issues with either.
X52 & WH - 5 years.

Thanks so much guys, this is such valuable feedback and it's really informing my choice. I am going to really miss yaw on twist I think.. and I don't want to splash out for pedals right away. Now you've all got me thinking that perhaps I'll use a two stick system and use my old stick for yaw and maybe vertical/lateral, alternating my left hand between the stick and the new throttle. Anyone tried this kind of set up?

You could think about the progression I took, which was firstly Hotas-X (as others have said, great value for £30).

I then saw a new, stick only warthog for iirc £135. I'd been fretting over whether I could justify £250-£280 to myself, and this seemed a good halfway house. I've seen the stick alone going that cheap a few other times on amazon as well. According to camelx3 cheapest ever was £114, though not been very low since Oct last year so you might have to wait a bit. £185 at the moment on Amazon, £155 on Alza according to google (never heard of Alza though!)

Anyway, for a long while I used the Hotas-X throttle and the wathog stick, with the hotas stick behind the monitor out of the way. I used the analog rocker switch on the Hotas X for yaw, and I got used to that a lot quicker than I thought I would. ED copes really well with >1 type of controller, the only problem is that it just labels them as e.g. Joy 1 in the settings, with no way to tell whether Joy 1 means button 1 on the Hotas or button 1 on the warthog. Not the end of the world.

Apparently in the US you can get the warthog throttle separately, but I've never seen it for sale over here. The only other throttle only option I found was the CH throttle which I bought a couple of months ago. The only real reason for that was there wasn't quite enough buttons on the Hotas-X throttle. I missed the rocker axis, but the CH throttle's got a little analogue mouse stick I'm using for yaw. It needs a fairly big dead zone set on that little stick (it'ss not settling back dead centre), but i find it good enough for yaw. I'm no ace pilot though and not into PvP. Again, no problems mixing that with the warthog stick.

Edit: to answer you original point, the warthog stick is great. As others have said, it can easily double up as a blunt weapon if you want, but the buttons and overall quality is top notch as well. Mine is not entirely smooth with a little freeplay in the centre, or more accurately a slightly lower resistance for the first fraction of movement before the full resistance of the spring kicks in. No problems with accuracy though and I don't think I've set any deadzone up at all.

When you buy it come back and post.

I have a HOTAS X and all the playing with curves and deadzones in the world merely make it better, not good at least for me with FA-OFF. It's still just too flakey down near the centered position. It's partly the response, partly the stiffness (also played with the stiffener underneath).

For the money the HOTAS X is great but I feel like I deserve something better, Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggone it, I like me.

honestly after using hotas and kb+m I'm pretty happy that I've arrived at dual joystick and rudder pedals. Full analogue control in every axes and enough butons to control the entire ship with lmfao.

I've had my 'Hog for 4 years now, and i can't even imagine how many hours it's been used (easy 3000 just in Elite) and it's still going strong, so in terms of value for money i'd say it's pretty hard to beat when it comes to HOTASes!

Just a heads up, Thrustmaster are supposedly releasing a new range of HOTAS soon, i don't know if they will be top end, or higher middle to compete on price with the Saitek ones though!

:p
Once I was playing and someone broke in to my house. My assault rifle was on the other side of the room, but my warthog was in my hands....

entirely off topic, but having it in your hands for a non violent reason (well, real world non violent) is almost the best excuse you can have over here in blighty for using it as a weapon: I just responded in the heat of the moment with something that just happened to already be in my hand. Honest guv.

Of course, saying ahead of time on a public forum that you see it doubling up as a blunt weapon is a major upside might count against you. Don't expect that'll bother you in the slightest where you are - I'd imagine the biggest concern would be whether a jury would hold it against you that you only had a blunt weapon in your hand rather than something a bit more deadly :p

I would be concerned with people making fun of me that I used a joystick as a defensive weapon as opposed to a firearm.

And getting the blood out of the carpet after a gunshot wound is really time consuming.
Plus I get in trouble if I fire weapons inside the house.

I wouldnt buy anything that doesnt have stick twist, but thats just me. Pedals suck.

That is why I decided not to buy the Warthog. I don't like pedals. A twist stick for yaw feels much more natural as you use it almost in the same single movement while manipulating the stick.
If Thrustmaster ever decided to create a Warthog with twist I'd be all over it.

Is this true?
If have been searching for info all over the place.
I can't find anything tangible.

Many great points have been made.

In the end OP, you need to just go with a Atari joystick.

It's the only way.

One Stick.
One Button.
Full Beast Mode.

looks like it's an updated Hotas X and some pedals:

Pedals seem to be at the Hotas X rather than Warthog end of the market.

Edit: apologies if there's more new stuff coming and this is old hat, but looks like they had a launch for this stuff last month. This is only based on a quick google his afternoon after it was mentioned above.

Give the Thrustmaster T.16000m a try first. Same sensor, but without the very heavy spring and long throw of the Warthog. Also, Warthog is only metal on the outside. Many of the internal friction parts are cheap plastic.

Yes, I always thought it a shame that the CH kit is only industrial grade plastic on the outside, which makes it look cheap even though it is really solid, but metal on the inside where it matters more.

Thanks.
So that seems to be all.
I am very disappointed.
They could have sold me a Warthog with twist for 400 euro. I am so ready to buy that.
