Horizons First Planetary landing. KABOOM

LOL! I got an advisory message for deliberately NOT swearing and using asterisks. Seriously? Someone needs to take a chill pill

Seriously first time landing with 9M ship? You deserved it man! I never crashed into a planet (accidentaly) and i fly pretty damn good considering i smuggled tons of slaves to bunch of planets with 3G+ and never crashed. I still used sidey for my first attempt because if you trash it who cares.
And I never crashed into a planet either! So there! I've never crashed a ship, ever. 2 insurance claims prior to 1.6. 1 after due to OP NPCs.

I did not crash into the planet, so your "you deserve it man" is misplaced and not helping. I know exactly what I was doing and what didn't happen and that is I was DESCENDING SLOWLY very very slowly because it was my first time and my ship insta-exploded. Did you even read my first post? I was 4-5km from the surface! sheesh some people.

Not a 9m cred ship, more like a 225million credit ship. Thank goodness for 96% insurance though right?

I've been playing since beta and know how to pilot a ship and know when to be careful attempting something new also since, you know, I've only been playing games since the 80s.

Think I'll just go back to playing as I did before...feeling like I just wasted $40 on this :(

Maybe I'll buy a sidewinder and land on a planet..But I don't even know how engineers work, Im guessing I can only upgrade the ship I'm currently flying....so that's pretty useless to me right now. Bah...

Well, you aren't wrong about upgrading only the ship that you are flying, but...

There is no reason why you can't get the items you need in a cheaper ship and then transfer to the ship you want to upgrade, as long as you have the cargo space.

Could be that since you were still in glide, you approached too fast and they thought it would be fun to shoot you up. I would file a bug report before asking for a refund, it might get you your ship back if it was a game error.
Definitely not, because I got the Glidecompleted message or whatever it says...then entered planetary flight mode and was descending, once again repeating myself, very very slowly. I even hovered for a bit without descending a few times to get a good look at my surroundings. No mountains, base 8km away, no structures, no other ships...nothing.

I can only repeat myself so many times, even to those trying to find an explanation. I have issued a ticket. Will see what happens but I'm already over it, it's fine. I'm not refunding horizons. Will just try again with a cheaper ship this time :)

Oh of course, I get it durrr. I am an idiot. I was thinking I'd need my ship there, but I only need it there when I want to upgrade, not collecting all the stuff for the blueprints. Thanks for pointing out what should have been obvious to me :)

I forgot to mention that when it comes to ED there are bugs, a lot of them, i once tried to crash at max speed into landable planet, looks like my ship turned into drill bore and i could fly under the surface. You can get out if you max your shield and slowly push through the surface back up. Or you could login as normal elite game without horizons and you get free ride to orbit.

The Conda is on the large size for modules, but I took an Asp to Felicity, upgraded the FSD, took it back to base and swopped it into the Python.
That saved a lot of jumps.

Obviously, you can't take the FSD or shields in a smaller ship, but a lot of the weapons and shield boosters can fit onto a smaller ship and be transferred to the Conda.

Part of the problem right now is that the planetary textures got such a NERF in the 2.1 update that the lack of detail on approach makes it VERY difficult to determine how close to the surface you actually are. In 2.0 there was so much more surface detail features as you were approaching the surface that it was easy to see how close you were getting, even without looking at your instruments.

All of this is made 10 times worse if the destination is on the dark side. Since the OP mentioned an Engineer, and since all of those bases are in the dark, I suspect that the OP simply ran into the ground at high speed. Some planets offer so little surface detail that when low light is added to the mix, I can see this kind of situation being very easy to run into. (No pun intended) ;)

FD has admitted that there is currently a bug in mid altitude textures with everyone seeing very low res versions regardless of what detail settings you use. I use ULTRA on a very high end overclocked gaming PC, and I get crap for image quality now thanks to these latest updates.

Worse than the Xbox One. :(

That's a little harsh, but I will say it does take some balls to attempt your first landing at an Engineer's base on a 1G+ planet. Kudos.

When I was landing at my first Engineer (same one), CMDR at <not his real name> decided to ram me from behind just as I was lowering onto the pad - for lolz or something.

you just simply got one shotted by op NPC :) congrats. Assuming that's as soon as you got out of 2500km/h speed into normal speed since you were 8km from base.
