Engineers Two weeks vacation, three stats, one result....

I didn't take vacation for ED, but just happened I bought Horizons and Engineers same time, returning from break since 1.4

Stats:
124 hours played according to steam
1015 km driven via SRV
....
....
3 yttrium found, total (from 4 metallic meteor clusters)

ohher than first hour or so driving around for sheer novelty fun on random planet, every min of ~46 hours of SRV scavenge hunt driving time was on a correct planet (e.g. Known prospector data planet sworn by players to be good for yttrium or polonium)

I still enjoy ED overall, but am utterly sick to death of even looking at an SRV. Despite it only taking about 1/3 of my hours played in 2.1, it has sapped 85% of my motivation to even land on planets much less pretend Horizons part didn't exist, due to my personal Engineers lotto.

i have, however, become quite adept at driving SRV over any terrain at break neck speeds. If there is ever a moon buggy race contest I will surely enter it.

Time to FRONTIER to hardly review RNG and its engineer system !

while RNG is certainly part of some issue I have over what is still a good update 2.1, I was more focusing on this take away:

put aside gripes, RNG frustration, etc. The one takeaway after two solid weeks of playing that weighs most heavily on my mind is somehow FD turned what I initially found 'really fun' and a blast just driving around full speed in SRV on various terrain types - into a dreaded activity that I utterly detest even thinking about landing on planet much less get back into SRV

its like a restaurant introduced me to some fabulous new dish, which was awesome as it was, then started serving it drenched in some awful condiment they refuse to serve it without. And now that awesome entree is ignored.

I dislike the srv it's a hateful thing on hilly planets I don't run any VR but I'd hate the thought of how sick those guys must feel bouncing around in one.

I'd far rather that they would put in a small chance of finding this stuff from regular mining in rings etc as an alternative for those that dislike the driving alternative round in the srv.

I am sort of comforted that I am not alone with this Yttrium hunt. I have been on a half dozen metal rich planets and blown up countless of items. I have gone up mountains, into eroded canyons, fluvial deltas, looked for that elusive volcanic action where FD might have purposely placed some of this stuff.

Maybe I am expecting too much, maybe it's just more RNG or items are purposely being held back. Anyone find polymer capacitors or military supercapacitors yet?

On this part I will concur. The hunt for rarer materials should be aided by the use of a Detailed Surface Scanner. Basically, the DSS should tell you the percent of the various elements on the planet......and that should play a significant role in how often you find those elements.

Got 6 from Junga 5 just the other day.

Yes, clearly he must be doing it wrong. Don't forget to tell him he should just ignore the material hunt and play the game the way he allways did. It's only a grind if you yourself choose it to be one.

No need to tell him.....you guys should know that by now.

To be fair, I hadn't actually intended focus of OP to be yet another 'I hate the RNG' thread. Those who do, already do. And those who don't, are equally vocal.

My main takeaway as I said above and just sharing with community - was that good, bad, RNG, fair or unfair, somehow FD turned what was initially a very thrilling and nice change of pace activity (zooming along in a moon buggy mini-sim), into a dreaded chore, can't stand thinking of climbing into an SRV affair.

Side effect or not, generally it's not good game design when you alienate even a portion of your user base from what is billed as one of the core new activities/updates. In a way I guess that is not new since we all had this kind of discussion when PP came out and it was a fairly polarizing affair - love, hate, or meh, there were distinct polarized camps.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/261858-3-days-26-polonium-and-19-yttrium-later i used the 2 top planets the poster in that thread mentioned, took me roughly 2 hrs maybe a bit less to find my 2 sets of mats for lvl 4 and 5 fsd, before i went i use to think that i hated the srv, now i can of find prospecting fun, from what i have read on the subject if u dont find your drops after 1 hour try another place. gl m8

Yep, Thats the same thread I used. Tried all the planets in order be listed. Then tried others noted by prospector guide, then just tried my own.

i suppose silver lining is despite some issues, I still enjoy flying my ships. But the SRV, am just totally burned on it.

Its actually not too bad at all even on hilly places, as you can usually see the horizon thanks to being able to look all around you which helps you orientate.

from what i get from these threads is, that the yttrium/polonium spawn rate/table is broken for some players (including me) or servers or something. i find yttrium all the time (on yttrium known planets), but when i go to known polonium sources, metallic meteorites spawn common materials like sulphur --- and i'm talking about 3 dozen of metallic meteorites.

fdev is looking into it.

@OP please file a bug report, the more info they have, the better they can adjust

___

searching for polonium yesterday i found a nearby destroyed data beacon, scanned it and got 4 (!) cracked industrial firmwares, though ---

I don't understand why everyone keeps trying to get Yttrium from planets when you can get it so much more easily from the barnacle.. Not so for polonium of course..

why not polonium, but yttrium? i tried to farm a polonium yielding barnacle with the same result as above... as said, all these are hints that the spawn tables are broken for some cmdrs.

Oh, I didn't realise there was a barnacle that spawned pollonium, can you let me know which one you were using?

Pleiades Sector IH-V C2-16 D3 5.89/-70.95 (Guarded with Goliath)
Pleiades Sector IH-V C2-16 D3 42.7647/-97.1527 (No Defense)

please check back when you tried and got polonium. i don't. see above.

In my case as can't speak for anyone else, but I kept planet scavenging because it became my white whale.

It was no longer about how can I get the 6 or 12 or whatever number of yttrium I'd need to equip my small fleet of ships with rank 4 FSD *my current Felicity rank.

It became a massive puzzle re: lack of metallic meteorite rocks even spawning. Some people are confusing my issue as 'can't find yttrium planets' or 'not getting any yttrium'. That is not it at all.

I may very well complain, later, about the rarity of yttrium - or not. But I have zero way to know that personally at moment because my issue is not getting yttrium out of metallic meteorites - it is finding MM on surfaces of known planets in the first place. That is my white whale at this point. The more I went without finding barely any MM at all, and after I was sure it was not due to lack of info re: what the scans look like, how to optimize looking for them, etc - I just kept at it.

If I just wanted yttrium, yes - I'd go do the barnacles thing. But I gave it a good long shot to SRV scavenge to see if like any case of odds - I was having a long run of bad and hopefully was due for some good. Unfortunately not.

But as I said, the thread was mainly to relate some disappointment that one of the prime activities I bought the Horizons expansion for, is something I now associate with such bad taste due to fruitless searching, that I don't even want to drive one at all, whether I am scavenging or not.

It's actually fun as hell to drive an SRV in VR. For me at least..

Have to mention, that I was getting sick just be leaving a station the first time (5 weeks ago) and therefore (and the not so shiny graphics before patch, of course) have not played ED for the first two or three weeks with my Vive. I was a bit frustrated at first.

Now I can tumble down crater walls with loopings and all without any (weird feelings aside) problems and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

Got over sickness by increasing my ED dose a bit every session always careful to never cross the border. Was tumbling and jumping through hills for hours last weekend.. <3

PS: Sorry for derailing...

EDIT: And I have found enough Yttrium at the right location.
