General / Off-Topic I guess we can wave goodbye to OS X and Mac version of ED Horizons

It worked so well for Microsoft, right? Oh...

I doubt that Apple would ever backtrack from Metal over OpenGL. Too bad they can't have both options.

I'd be surprised if they really can't - Windows has supported both DirectX and OpenGL for years now. If they stop supporting OGL it will most likely be a business decision, not a technical one.

Wait, back up a second. How did you reach that conclusion from the article you linked? The only thing that supports it is a Facebook comment on the bottom of the post (which could very well be you?)
It is me. And see all changes they introduce and how they name their products. It is basically aimed at AndroidOS, because that's what eating their lunch at the moment. They aren't interested in full blown desktop anymore. It is done.

Well until Apple start putting decent graphics cards into their machines they are going to get left further and further behind in gaming world as VR makes inroads and demands more graphics power. Apple won't go down that route because they've always been more interested in shiny cases rather than the actual hardware inside.

Idk, that is kind of how I feel about all the newer OS for desktops. They are all more "userfriendly" and mobile oriented. It doesn't necessarily mean that macs will all become slightly bigger tablets with keyboards. It's just a general dumbing down of the the UI that has been going on for decades. Doesn't herald the end of the Mac, just as windows 8 didn't herald the death of the PC. Ditto for Vista and Me with their "media focused" "userfriendly" updates. The death of the PC was heralded again and again. And the death of the space sim was declared over a decade ago. Lol. Now people are declaring the death of the Mac workstation.

Lets try to keep some perspective. Tech solves all problems that are actual problems, eventually.

PC won't die because I will just keep using Linux and laughing my ass off to see Microsoft slowly turning Windows into sub based mobile platform.

For Macs there's such thing. People bought OS X and use it because it was solid *desktop* alternative. It slowly turns into something else most *desktop* users don't want.

This^^

I dont see how this is a bad thing for apple. At the very least it may mean graphics drivers that support API's that aren't 6 years old. Whether that means more development on Elite for the new OS .... really depends on what changes are needed.

I think it would make much more sense to make the subtle changes needed for Linux instead. Linux supports everything needed to keep lock-step with the windows version for 1.6 and 2.1.

Or stop porting to anything other than windows so the dev team is not spread more thinly than they already are.
