General / Off-Topic Emergency Motoring ~ Your choice when driving out of an apocalyptic disaster?

Whether it be the confirmed end of the world, an aggressively-starting zombie apocalypse, impossibly two tidal waves closing in half the entire area of Toronto both twice the size of the CN Tower or a sudden Armageddon of multiple meteors showering down into the middle of your city that weren't fully broken up after entering the Earth's atmosphere, you're going to have to find a vehicle capable enough to escape such chaos.

Yes, I do mean by driving for your life out of an apocalyptic calamity in something similar (or perhaps a bit worse) to a Hollywood film with only the option to run over and crash through large debris and cows while they tear up your suspension:

Although people would be warned ahead of time due to weather-prediction and quake-tracking technology we have nowadays, let's just say it suddenly happened out of the blue with no warning on a typical Wednesday morning. What disaster would it be and which land vehicle would you choose? Remember, it can't be a military vehicle or a fully-equipped armoured car. Has to be vehicles that you see every now and then.

What would I choose, personally?

A pickup truck that isn't made from Toyota, Nissan or other companies that aren't really meant to produce pickups. Large V8 engine, 6-speed or 8-speed automatic, solid axle front suspension, positraction rear differential, camper shell and off-road tires if mounted. A little bit like this:

Pickup trucks in general can take a beating a bit more than other types of vehicles, anyways. Share your thoughts!

It would depend on where I was going and why?

Good quality dirt bike. It will cover most terrains and light enough to push.

With notice, the best option is to find cover and wait things out.

Dirt bike would be ideal, though you may need to leave a few of the others behind.

I would use one of these vehicles. How often you see them would depend on where you live. :D

Large farm tractor (best off road performance possible) with front loader/grabber (for moving things out of the way), fully enclosed cab (keep the zombies out), possibly towing a trailer with living accommodation and fuel.

I figure speed is not going to be my friend, speed just gets you into crashes which will end you as there is no help available. Even a 4x4 will struggle across a muddy ploughed field or roadside ditch and hedgerow. A tractor will punch trough that no problem.

The loader allows abandoned cars etc to be moved out of the way. Runs on readily available diesel fuel, tough tires, high driving position away from ground based attack, easy to modify with armour, barbed wire etc. readily available outside of towns and often have less security than normal cars.

At a pinch a large JCB might do, but it's not as good off road.

Nice! Where / how far did you travel? My detective powers suggest somewhere in Africa ;)

And you did better, all the sophisticated electronics are well hidden :D

No electronics in that truck. (aside from the CB radio and the Fuel/ water/waste water Tank level dispays)

We went from germany to west sahara, maroc, libya, algeria. a number of times.

Usually 8 weeks at a time.

We build a second and a third one... but they werent as nice on the inside:

Amazing. Any zombies?!!? [knocked out][knocked out][knocked out]

OP, I'd hope to find an original Land Rover Defender. Unless I could take my WRX off the drive - AWD rather than 4x4, but I know it would never let me down!

I don't need anything more than my trusty mountain bicycle. Even though I'm no longer in my prime, a bicycle would be my fastest way to get somewhere decently safe unless there's a big construction truck outside.

No zombies. But we were asked quite a few times if we were doing Rally Paris dakkar. Comes with the constant 90kmh across the desert in a convoy ;)

Also we had two instances of some bandits trying to get the money of that "silly tourists". First was an old mercedes 230/8 driving aside the driver... then we heard goat like laugh from the driver and a crash... and saw the car flying off the street. Sole comment from the driver: "what do those "§$&"(§/$ think this 18 ton truck has all the cow bars for? decoration?" He later told us they drove to his door, opened the window and waved with a pistol.

Second was 2 landrovers as a "street block" in the middle of the desert. and about 10 people wearing djelabas and AK-47s. once both trucks floored it and the front one lowered its front cow bar hydraulically to 45 degrees they were VERY quick getting the roadblock away.
I cant blame them. Two (ex russion military) monster trucks at full throttle charging them with SCREAMING Engines: and in a paint thats somewhat similar to military desert paint... I would have ran, too... we dont know to day if that was police or bandits tho ;)
