I played a new game today.

Today i received my Oculus Rift CV1 and after running through the easy setup and downloading some free demos, i decided to fire up that goode ole game called Elite and do what i am used to do...

Well... I found myself sitting inside a massive Asp cockpit, the ground many meters below me, while the ship is still standing on the ground... wow... I took a few minutes looking around the cockpit and out the side viewports. By all means impressive...
i hit that launch button and the transport sled and elevator jump into action moving me into that... station. There i sat for quite some minutes and watched the traffic... then i took off for the nearest planet for a little cruisin´and SRV action. On my way, i flew past planets and a sun... gigantic celestial bodies... actually, i flew some quick orbits around some of them, just for the view.
Afterwards i went for some quick combat runs in my Viper... the incredible advantage to look out the side viewport, or above you... man, that made combat so much more immersive - and easier. The A.I. that was everywhere but in front of me and blew my ships to pieces - i can see that ship now - follow it, plan my maneuver and keep it in my sights, even with fixed weapons... The sense of distance, scale and speed makes all the difference.

The CV1 changed everything for me. I loved playing Elite, but i did not expect what i experienced today. The Rift turned the game into a full scale world - a lot less playing and more being there. The immersion is almost perfect. And when we see the second generation of HMDs, with higher res-displays, the immersion will be perfect for sure.

For all those, who are struggeling if to go VR or not... dont speculate, test it! It cannot be described with words. For me its worth every cent and every minute.

Tomorrow i head out into the unknown void... there are worlds to be seen :)

That was my first thought too... once you get the scale of things, the feeling for distance... you are totally off this world. I will never play Elite without a Rift anymore.

yeah it is a different game! it is all so unbelievably impressive and stunning on so many Levels! I just cant express the joy it gives me proper ist just outside any scale!

Indeed. I thought about a gigantic 3 monitor set up, but that would lack "depth" AND be much, much more expensive.

I played Elite exclusively on a 55" widescreen. Its actually a joke compared to VR... And i only own a GTX970.

Next month i will pick up a GTX 1080. .75 supersampling and settings to mid range is not what i want, but it still beats maxed out settings on a 55" by far.

Getting the right hardware for VR is currently the main problem in my opinion. Its very expensive and if ignored, you get only half the experience or less. You must want VR and then do whats necessary to get it. Any compromise will result in downgrades, that are much more noticable than in regular gaming.

Now if they can fix using galaxy map to work better under VR then I will be happy. But apart from that scale and feel fine.

It looks even better with super sampling enabled. I'm getting no jidder and it's butter smooth. It's beyond amazing. I can hardly believe this is all real.

Oh, try this free movie called "Henry." It will put a smile on your face.

:)

Also ordered the CV1. How long did the shipping take? When did you order and when did it arrive?

Can't wait to play Elite with the Rift. Had a short session last year with the DK2 at a players house and it was really cool. I hope the resolution got much better. That was the only downside.

Congratulations! Be prepared to play games as you never did before :)

I preordered in january on the first day, so time to shipping took a while ;) - delivery itself only took impressive one and a half days from USA to Germany. This planet is getting really small.

Download also the debug tool, it's amazing what it does. is the same supersampling used on elite, but for all the other games. It can be specs demanding.

I dont have a rift yet although I have just installed EDTracker. That is a real game changer on its own so I can only imagine the immersiveness of a rift. Still I am not complaining. I love to look out the side window as I boost out of a planets gravity well. So very realistic.

The link is here: https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/
you want oculus SDK for windows. Download and extract it, and navigate to the tools folder. The debug tool is in there. I have it pinned to my start menu for easy access

Thank you! I will download and take a look.

Tracking is one thing, freely moving your head a totally different one. Also the feeling, you get from the scale... You are there!

got my rift yesterday as well so i'll pile into your thread :) .. first evening (until way too late) was just spent playing around with all the usual first time stuff (dreamdeck, VR introduction, Darknet, Oculus Video, lost,The Climb, project cars EVE Valkyrie etc).. amazing and wow was uttered many times.. today after dropping kids off at school I took the morning off work.. started with playing a bit with leap motion and the demos out there.. its cool, but all it really highlights is how much I want Oculus Touch..

then, it was time for the real game I dusted off my Thrustmaster Flight X HOTAS which had been sitting its box for the last year at least..

I haven't really played elite since it was in beta.. I was waiting for VR so i wouldn't burn out without VR.. and now its here.. so my idea is, HOTAS + voice Attack (with either Shattner or Spiner, bought both for good measure) + Rift.

so spent some time training the voice recognition.. its getting there.. then I figured I really need to try to find a good key binding that works for me with this planned set.. tried a few that I found but still working on it they just dont do thins exactly how i would want to do it in my setup.. because you REALLY REALLY need to know all your buttons since there is no looking at cheat-sheets.. and no way to easily memorise 20 buttons by just a fast glance at them.. so buttons will probably have to be limited to a few and I'm hoping voice attack can help me with the rest..

Loaded into the training missions, and WOW when you sit in that cockpit OMG.. this was probably the most immersive thing I have ever done.. my throttle is just where its in the game, as is my joystick.. I turn it and it moves I can see it.. just amazing.. the amount of presence was great.. then I accidentally turned off flight assist.. WOW that gone get nauseating quickly! before i found the button that turned it back on again I was starting to get quite dizzy.. helps to focus on the centre radar..

so, went around shot some canisters was cool, struggling with the HOTAS key mapping, a bit of a pain to go back and forth configuring the keys..pain finding the keyboard while in the rift and doing things..

flew the wolf pack training mission.. ended very quickly.. loaded into the next one, "Face off" 15 minutes later I emerged victorious with a hull damaged all the way down to 9% but i won.. damn I sux hehe Think I will have to play this mission like 5-10 times just to prove to myself i can kill this         without taking any hull damage, still struggling with the key bindings.. unfortunately it was lunch time and I had to close down and head to work..

so plan for tonight is to play the training missions a few times get really familar with the buttons that I need, next is to try the voice attack stuff.. then the galaxy will be my playground.

I only got a Nvidia 980, but will try the super sampling anyway.. :D
