Today i received my Oculus Rift CV1 and after running through the easy setup and downloading some free demos, i decided to fire up that goode ole game called Elite and do what i am used to do...
Well... I found myself sitting inside a massive Asp cockpit, the ground many meters below me, while the ship is still standing on the ground... wow... I took a few minutes looking around the cockpit and out the side viewports. By all means impressive...
i hit that launch button and the transport sled and elevator jump into action moving me into that... station. There i sat for quite some minutes and watched the traffic... then i took off for the nearest planet for a little cruisin´and SRV action. On my way, i flew past planets and a sun... gigantic celestial bodies... actually, i flew some quick orbits around some of them, just for the view.
Afterwards i went for some quick combat runs in my Viper... the incredible advantage to look out the side viewport, or above you... man, that made combat so much more immersive - and easier. The A.I. that was everywhere but in front of me and blew my ships to pieces - i can see that ship now - follow it, plan my maneuver and keep it in my sights, even with fixed weapons... The sense of distance, scale and speed makes all the difference.
The CV1 changed everything for me. I loved playing Elite, but i did not expect what i experienced today. The Rift turned the game into a full scale world - a lot less playing and more being there. The immersion is almost perfect. And when we see the second generation of HMDs, with higher res-displays, the immersion will be perfect for sure.
For all those, who are struggeling if to go VR or not... dont speculate, test it! It cannot be described with words. For me its worth every cent and every minute.
Tomorrow i head out into the unknown void... there are worlds to be seen
