New to Elite and VR

Hi, all!
Just got Oculus Rift and am trying to play the game.
I am not sure what to do.
So, I find myself in the cockpit but how do I fly?
Whatever buttons I press on the XBox controller don't make any difference, I don't seem to move.

Here is what I also tried:
Entered the galaxy map, selected a planet, wanted to go into the overdrive but received a voice alert that it couldn't do it.

I am totally lost.

Any help is appreciated :)

I also use a xbox 360 controller and have noticed it take several minutes sometime to become functional in-game with my HTC vive aka move the menu items and to move it towards "Launch".

Hi there! Welcome to the forums and the Rift!

To be honest, disconnect the Rift and just play on a monitor for a little while so you can get the basics down. It's easier to fiddle with control settings and checking your gamepad is working in Windows outside of VR.

Run through the training missions first until you get used to it - and alt-tab over to google for stuff you're not sure about. The learning curve on ED is *steep* - and jumping in with VR isn't the best thing to do initially (imho).

There is a training academy Discord chat/voice comms setup also, see: https://community.elitedangerous.com/thegalacticacademy

They should be able to help :) And along with the tutorials, you'll get going in no time - then you can pop into VR once you know where everything is. Also check out some of the ED videos on Youtube which will help show off the basic concepts.

I just got the Vive headset and found out that my HOTAS is roughly where my stick and throttle are in the game world. So its kind of easy to locate. The buttons are all mapped to how I play and so finding them in VR is also a lot easier. What I would do is go to the training option outside of VR and get the button configurations correct first. Once you're happy with them then head into the VR mode.

Welcome to Elite. Both the above replies are great suggestions. If you are not new to computers, as well as Elite, I would suggest ditching the Xbox controller and buying a Hotas stick and throttle like say Saitek x52. Your hand will be where they are in the Rift adding to the emersion and you will be able to map a lot of the controls to it. Voice Attack and a profile like Astra will allow you to control much of your ship and the game by voice. The advice Slopey gives to learn the game outside of VR first, cannot be understated. It will make it much easier to decide how to set up what ever controls you use.

Voice Attack is absolutely perfect for VR as you don't need to see your keyboard to do anything that requires a keystroke. I also love to use it to play songs while I travel in space

Thrustmaster Hotas X is cheap and very good to start with. Add the Voice Attack and you needn't ever touch a key!

Admitting that the Saitek x52 is twice the price, the nice thing is you can position your controller and hands exactly like they appear in VR as the stick and throttle are separate. There are also 2 inexpensive mods that improve tension and accuracy. had mine for several years of heavy use without complaint.
I seem to recall a video that Saitek is designing some ED specific controllers.

Once you have the Rift on, trying to use keyboard buttons is a nightmare - as you cannot see them (unless you take off the rift)

I had a pretty crap joystick to start, so I used Voice Attack to trigger commands. I know use a HOTAS (X55) and no longer need VA as muscle memory has kicked in. ;)

The game has a very steep learning curve - you have to put a few hours in and prepared to be a little frustrated.

If you have Teamspeak and know how to use it, drop me a PM and I will try and talk you through the basics.

Cheers
Nosh.

I haven't tried the x52, but the Ch Throtltle + Thrustmaster 16000M combo seems hard to beat. That little joystick on the Ch Throttle makes all the difference in the world. You map it to vertical and lateral thrusters as an axis.

As to the OP, this game has a learning curve. Better to learn the ropes on a monitor first. The first few weeks are rough but it's worth it. You'll have to visit many YouTube videos.

Exactly the setup I use and LOVE it!. One thing to add to that is to install CH Throttle control manager and lower the throttle and the little joystick sensitivities(curves). Makes flight movements alot more natural.

Hmm...I haven't touched the sensitivity curves. I'll give it a try, thanks.

To tell you the truth I got ED the day it came out. Took me few hours just to learn how to get out of the hangar. After that I got bored and haven't touched it in more than a year.
Not really ready to do it all over again if that's what all replies imply. So, can I just use it with an xbox controller or I need a joystick? I don't think I want to invest more into a game I am not sure I will figure out how to play now.

-Get things working without VR first.
-Figure out your preferred controller: keyboard/mouse, xbox controller, HOTAS
-Play around with the controller settings to your preference, you could try to get bindings from others (look for threads on it)
-Do the tutorial missions to get a feel for the controls. Not in VR.
-Once you have the basic mechanics down.. enable VR

For VR some sort of controller is highly suggested. A stick/throttle is most ideal, but an xbox controller can work. keyboard/mouse may be quirky in VR unless you don't need to look at the keyboard to do things. But go with whatever works best for you.

Elite is a game that has a learning curve. Once you get past it, things open up greatly. Its not all that difficult, but it takes some patience and a willingness to learn. Elite is a simulation, so with that comes a good bit of detail. Check out the various youtube training videos as well.. and watch a few twitch streams for the game. You can see how others get around and do things and it'll give you ideas for how you'd like to start.
