UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

What did Hudson and the Feds found in the exploration data they got from the CG? What do they know about Hasley? Maybe more than we're expecting....

They know far more than they are letting on. That entire thing was a scam. I'd be willing to bet they already knew of Halsey's "architects of creation", and were just using her voice as a sympathetic front to get their hands on more data.

No such thing as coincidence ?

MEROPE 2A REPORT: Farragut class battlecruiser activities:

The cruiser is located in 12.43 ; -161.51. My first approach was silent, but I was surprised to see that the military forces in there were, in fact, friendly to me. Considering that I'm an Imperial I did not expect that. I swooped the area, where there is one of the biggest barnacles I have ever seen, if not the biggest. I could not count how may spikes there were, but I believe there were more than 10. Nothing unusual on their activity: they produce a variety of minerals and, eventually, meta alloys.

What is surprising, though, is the location of the barnacle. It is placed on top of the only hill that is in that canyon. If I'm not wrong -and I may, as I came back from one month exploration trip in Formidine yesterday) the barnacles used to be placed on flat ground. This one, however, is place in very sloppy terrain, being the main barnacle inclined and partially buried in the top of the hill. Most of the spikes are, as well, placed in weird angles respecting to the floor where they grow in.

Talking to various commanders, it seems like the "Warrior" was not the first Farragut Class Battlecruiser in the zone. A coordinated attack by canonn pilots managed to drive at least 4 battlecrruisers out of Merope 2A, just to be immediatly replaced by another one. This indicates a full operation taking place in there, and the Federation willing to spend a very important part of its military resources in this operation. Intercepting several of their communications they expressed several times that their orders were to "blockade the area".

After 15 minutes of exploring in my SRV I recalled my ship to leave; it was at this point in which they launched a full force of ships against me. God bless my 5A shields and my improved thrusters that permitted me to fly away, dodging enemy fire through the canyons.

Canonn Sciencists, the enemy is very powerful. I urge you to investigate what their objectives may be, and not just get in a fight we might not win. Also, please remember that among our volunteers are both Federal and Imperial commanders, the last thing we want to do is to enter in a civil war regarding the Canonn's actions.

Fly safe, commanders.

Updates:

The barnacle has 14 spikes apparently. So, no bigger than any other one, however it looks pretty extensive, likely due to the location in a hill about 40meters tall.
The Farraguts will not respond to aggressions towards the barnacle itself. They will spawn if you get to close to the ship or try to get inside it.
Once they have spawn they will attack any ship nearby, lsending waves of 5 to 10 fighters, ranging from eagles to vultures.
It looks like they would not attack a Federal cmmdr (that is, someone with federal rank).

Future plans:

It has been observed that some scort ships will periodically jump out of Merope. I recommend to take some wake shift scanners to follow those ships and see where they lead us. This could be a good clue on what is going on.

I strongly recommend to avoid engagement except if you are part of an strong combat wing.

Fly safe,commanders.

EDDB is showing up one or two other interesting LC-V C2-10s as well - tinfoil coincidences but we've followed worse trails before.

If this holds true, then it would only make sense if Barnacles are being placed by humans since aliens would use a completely different mapping system for the galaxy. It would not make any sense for this to be a pattern for any other reason and it would make me sad if they went that way.

if might be a consequence of the procedural generation seed, not because it is on purpose probably.

I'm on my way home from work now, can probably be in the lagoon in a few hours, I'll see if there are any closer when I get back

Two systems doesn't establish a pattern but when we do get something that is reasonably easily testable it'd be daft not to check it out.
I agree that it would be a crap pattern but hey-ho, the ED gods are human after all ;)

Regarding those system names, let me recommend the excellent Decoding Universal Cartographics thread by Jackie Silver. Long story short, that "LC-V C2-10" part is generated by the system's position within its region, and the C part is the mass code of the system.

So, the similarity between the two systems based on their names is that both should be roughly within the same part of the California nebula region and the Witch Head nebula region, as well as in the same category of system mass. However, non-procedural nebula sectors can be wonky, as they basically override the part of the procedural sector they'd be present in.

The procedural names are generated, at least in part, by star type, I believe. It's entirely possible that there's some other system data that goes into it, and so commonalities in names may simply be a reflection of what types of systems are suitable for barnacle life. Or it might be chance.

Edit - Marx has the correct info here, not me - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...6-The-Canonn?p=4101374&viewfull=1#post4101374

Icy planets are poor candidates - the systems I've picked out are in sectors associated with known nebulae. Is there an IC 4604 nebula?

I've been here flying planets for 3 weeks at least :)

I'm flying this one now, but there are a lot of them like this:
