Multi-Crew Exploration

The more I think about it, the better it sounds - depending on how FD will implement it.

I think it could work like this:
- First CMDR logs into session will be in the pilot seat
- If joined by another CMDR on board, he/she would sit in any of the available seats (as much as I can't stand Asp, it's lower deck looks nice for example)
- On demand the piloting seat could be switched
- Co-pilot could search the map and do route plotting
- If in a nice system, the additional ship(s) could be dispatched for detailed exploration

Some of us would probably even pay to have a seat on Allitnil's ship. :)

This is the one expansion I'm looking forward to the most as it can radically change the way exploration can work, especially long distance expeditions like Distant Worlds, as it could potentially open them up to more people who don't have the game time to travel vast distances.

Being part of a crew and having access to a small craft (via the Guradians upgrade) for localised exploration around the baseship, or the ability for all the crew to grab a SRV and explore the worlds where the baseship lands could be an awesome way to undertake exploration.

My concern is that multi crew will be 99.999 % geared toward the pew pew crowd and glass walls and silly nonsensical restrictions will somehow give explorers nothing at all from the whole mechanic.

I really hope we get thrown a bone with the coming upgrades.

Sorry, but I'm a lone wolf. Can't imagine this update will be remotely interesting for explorers anyway, probably not even for 90% of other CMDRs after the initial interest has worn off.

I get it as I'm also more like that, my IRL travels were also a one man show as I always preferred the freedom it gives.

But just look at the populartity mass-expeditions, a lot of CMDRs do like the idea of community-exploration... it would be a huge missed opportuntity.

It would be cool to leave someone in an srv on a planet and then explore nearby systems while they explore the surface- that's what will be useful for me :)

id rather fly alone too, no interest in multi crews, hope they make it optional and dont force us to have a co-pilot...

And when their SRV explodes, do they magically get transported to your ship 250 LYs away? What if you crash ship, what happens to the SRV ? If one cmdr dies, and gets resurrected, where does he go? Does he keep data?
I can forsee dozens of loose ends that will need rules, just for exploration.

iirc the old games had crew for the larger ships. If you bought a new ship in the wrong port you could be grounded for weeks trying to hire crew (npc of course).
If we could 'guest' upon a friends deck as one of the existing npc crew (ie take control of the npc), that could be cool.

I'm still waiting for npc's to join my wing to even things up a bit, so the cynic says there won't be too much useful for the typical loner explorer.

I'd like it if the NPC crew mechanic of FE2/FFE made a return, and other players would have a drop-in ability to temporarily replace them. The way I see it, the possibility of drop-in coop would make multi-crew gameplay much more accessible to players, as opposed to both Commanders having to be docked at the same station and then going off somewhere. Mind you, the two aren't mutually exclusive: I think both could be implemented.

And personally, even if I'm flying solo, I'd still like to see some NPC crew on the bridge of my Anaconda. It would make it feel less like I'm captaining a ghost ship whenever I look around.

Also,

Given that the game has a solo mode, and FD probably have metrics about how many players use it, I'm fairly certain they wouldn't want to force multicrew on players.

NPC crew on exploraconda bridge is one thing, 'real' multicrew another. I barely like to be in the quadrant as others let alone onboard the same ship.. :)

Yep. Would also be useful to rescue stranded explorers. If it wasnt for a nearby fuel rat, Corbin Moran would have been left to live in his SRV on Beagle Point last week. :). So there is a lot of other interesting gameplay scenarios that can emerge from multicrew, provided FD don't turn it into some sort of pvp only gimmick.

There are already a lot of 'magic' scenarios, it is a game afterall.

The one thing that might affect explorers more is actually passenger mechanics also incoming in 2.2 - Michael Brooks recently asked for nice looking systems we discovered to be included as destinations for passenger missions. It could make for an interesting additional activity explorers might do...

I'm interested in it and I'm a fairly nonsocial type when it comes to close interaction in games. If it does work as a permanent expedition tool - different CMDRs able to pilot the same ship at different times, and all persons involved getting discovery credits - it would be a very interesting way to travel fast by teaming up with people around the globe, and good to explore systems when online at the same time.

While I do prefer to explore alone, I think multicrew will be great in certain situations. Imagine if we had it at the DW meet ups, even parked at a waypoint just chilling out in somebody else's ship would be cool.

Has anyone linked the galactic mapping project and the POIs? :)

Not yet. I plan to add some of the nearby Distant Worlds waypoints to Michael Brookes' tourism candidate thread, and link the mapping project with them. I'm not sure if the mapping project is well known within FD, despite how long it's been around, so maybe this would be a good way to let them know there is one :)

If you see any POIs on the maps, feel free to submit them. There are some great tourism candidate systems on there.
