Exploration 101 question

Gday all,
well finally I have the Asp Ex with a 30ly range, now the question is where to go? Head West young man I believe is the quote.

My question is -after mapping a route out say 300ly, on the Galaxy map, how do I get the route to stay on the Galaxy map. cause every time I stop, set up a planet to explore, and look at that un-explored planet, my long route disappears and I have to re set it.

Is there another way of route planning? Is there a programme I can use to record where I am going, where I have been, whats there, ect?

Any advise for a beginner explorer would be most appreciated.

Moved to Exploration.

I've not had chance to try since Engineers, but try putting a bookmark at your 300LY destination, it should at least be fairly easy to recalculate the route that way.

Out of interest, doesn't the little 'route' icon with the three circles connected by lines stay next to the next star even after focus has changed? Have a quick look on the left panel, navigation, scroll down and see.

Once you have a route set, it stays until you either complete it, log off or make a new one. While in a system, go ahead and target a planet to scan and explore...then when ready to continue, hit the key mapped to "Target next system in route" and off you go along your planned route.

As said, the route doesnt disappear. You can see the next waypoint by looking your left side panel and scrolling through systems available, there should be a marker for the next system in line.

go into control settings and there is an unassigned control for "select next system in route" at least on xbox there is so just set this to an easy button to remember :), im sure there is something similar on PC

There is - took me two months to realise.
That way you can scan everything in a system then just tap the "next system on the route" key and off you go. Bookmarks are also your friends if you have to log off before you reach the end of a route.

(My galaxy map is hotkeyed to "?", system map is "@", and select next system in route is on "~" - all near one another for ease of exploration. This is cos ? = Where am I? @ = this is where I'm at and ~ = ok, next!)

With the 2.1 update you also have the means to create bookmarks on the galaxy map. I use these for long travels (up to 999.99 LY) to mark the end of my journey. This way when I have to log off (or are forced to log off by e.g. - and very unlikely - a game crash) I still have my current destination at hand.

Gentlemen,
thankyou all for your advise, I now am having a lot easier run of exploration.

I do have a question for you all regarding the overall range. My Asp Explorer can jump just on 30 light years. Which I thought was the the total range with the fuel carried, but it seems to me that the range of 30 light years can be jumped several times before fuel is exhausted. I found this out yesterday after jumping into a system that would not allow my ship to fuel from the purple star.

Bookmarking the end of a exploration run seems the only way of re-planning the route on the Galaxy page at the moment. Thankyou for that suggestion also.

The 30ly jump range is per jump asps get 7 jumps which equates to 210ly range. You can increase the number of jumps by fitting fuel cells which may or may not have benifets depending on circumstance

use the EDDiscovery app, and plot the route, you will be prompted with the waypoints you need to circumvent some particularly hard to navigate areas
Then, bookmark a lot and explore in the galaxy map a lot, you never know what you will be finding near to you.

Use the EDSM page to check the galactic map, there are a lot of poi and star systems maped there. You can plot a route through the most famous ones and then set course to the unknown.

Yup took me a little while to realise the importance of that particular keymap, i've now got it mapped to "Resume Navigation" in Voice Command and it works a treat.:D

Indeed. 3 of the most important mapped commands I use when exploring is System Map, Gal Map and Target next system in route. I have all three mapped to my Hotas and they save me an ounce of sanity in the black by not scrolling through left panels menus constantly.
