Elite / Frontier My PLEA to David Braben

Dude - if you're going to make a scathing video (or an attempt at humor) you could at least get the spelling right.

What is atmopheric and I believe that believing should subscribe to the 'i' before 'e' rule (except after 'c').

Its a remix :p

by the way i made that vid cos i am sick to the back teeth of seeing great games being ported to nintendo hardware ending up crap.

Um - E4 won't be released this decade....In fact, I imagine that by the time it is released, the PC will have totally overhauled the current generation of consoles. I guess by the time E4 gets released, the PS3 will have been discontinued by Sony (not that anyone will notice since no one bought one).

As for your sentiments on PS3/360 vs Wii - well, graphics have never made a good game, they just make a good game better.

Personally, I hope E4 is developed as a PC title only, or possibly ported to consoles after that. Consoles are really not the place where Elite 4 would do well if it's going to be an evolution of previous Elites. Console gamers for the most part, just aren't interested in that type of thing - or to put it another way, if E4 is a game for console gamers, then I reckon most people posting here won't like it.

I have a PS3, what you try'in to say? That just cos I have fastest CPU this year that I some sort of lowlife?

Yes.

But in all seriousness, I have to agree with ToadMan - as a primarily PC-bound gamer, I'm of the opinion that Elite 4 is the sort of game which belongs first and foremost on the PC, as console controllers make flight/space simulator type games very difficult to develop, because of the limitations on the number of commands that you can fit onto a console controller.

Oh, and BTW, m1rkd1rk, while the CPU of the PS3 is probably the quickest commercial one around, the graphics card is already a generation behind those on the PC.

And I've never thought that in the land of RPGs, that the Elder Scrolls games were that much to shout about. *Fallout fan forever (unless Bethesda drags the series down the toilet, destroying the last vestiges of its dignity)*

Indeed. In fact, that reminds me of something. There are two games in the military simulator market which both had relatively crap graphics, but which revolutionised the mil-sim genre (and ended up, in modified forms, being used as military training programs) - Operation Flashpoint and Steel Beasts. A lack of graphical quality never held these games back.

QFT.

I've seen great games where graphics contributed significantly to their overall quality, but I've never seen a game that was actually good thanks to the graphics alone.

Graphics is just the icing on the cake - if it's good - cool, but it's among the least important things in games.

Personally, I hope E4 is developed as a PC title only, or possibly ported to consoles after that. Consoles are really not the place where Elite 4 would do well if it's going to be an evolution of previous Elites. QFT again.

Not only does developement for consoles impose serious limitations on the game's interface, but it also results in severely dumbed down (the buzzword used by PR crooks is "streamlined", I believe) games most of the time.

Of course, I don't want to imply that every console gamer is dumb as a brick, however the majority of console gamers prefer simplified, "casual" games that are easy to get into, which, I can't help, but notice, is in stark contrast with what Elite series made us used to.

Another thing is that consoles tend to maximize graphics performance at the cost of everything else. While it's certainly beneficial for rendering those photorealistic particle-based explosions complete with shaders, atropine drops emulation (bloom), and realistic lightsourcing, I predict that consoles would suck terribly at simulating myriads of vast, dynamic planetary systems, each complete with it's own share of independent ships, economy, and planetary weather systems.

To summarize:
-I can't see reasonably complex control interface required for an Elite game pulled off on a console
-I don't want to either see this series devolve into just another arcadey space shooter or see E4 bomb because of hordes of imbeciles declaring that "THIS GAEM IS TEH CARP I TURNED OFF ENGINES BUT CANT STOP U ALL SUCK."
and
"I HAEV ENGINES ON BUT CANT GET ANYWHERE THIS GAEM IS BORKED U R ALL STUPID."
because of their failure to grasp concepts of time compression and newtonian mechanics.
-I don't want to sacrifice the feeling of the living universe, the exploration and the vastness of space because of consoles.

Could you repeat please? But this time in English.

I like TES III: Morrowind, but, while it's one of my favourite games, it's certainly not one of my favourite cRPGs - the game world is interesting and well developed, complete with abundant background lore, the exploration is very rewarding and the game distances itself from typical black and white morality common in most of the fantasy settings to make things more interesting, but the ability to influence the game with your actions is severely lacking and the character interaction is downright tragic, leaving TES III, as an RPG, way behind the likes of Planescape: Torment and Fallout series.

As for TES IV, it's basically TES III with better graphics but stripped of all it's positive aspects and chock full of design decisions.

In other words C.R.A.P.*

*Fallout fan forever (unless Bethesda drags the series down the toilet, destroying the last vestiges of its dignity)*
I hate to say that, but given:
-primarily console developement
-dialogue system already declared to be more in the vein of Oblivion than Fallout (farewell dialogue trees, welcome dialogue stumps)
-dialogue having little to no influence on your game
-gameplay oddities such as unexploded bomb's crater, mini-nuke launcher notable for it's close combat capabilities and lack of ability to take down a super mutant in one shot, or explosive nuke-cars

FO3 will almost certainly suck on par with FOBOS.

Dear David

As a kid, i had this C64. There was this game, Elite. We played it, we enjoyed it. Then we had the Commodore Amiga, and later on (much later), 486. It was still the best game ever made.
Too bad, that anno 07, we have better hardware, worse games. I understand that us 'oldtimers', dont play consoles, Etc. But i still wanted to see the next Frontier. Too bad.
I guess there is no talent left. (but isnt it fun, that we have the hardware, Irony....).
But no, ofcourse there is talent, only the generation shift, makes games, (according to me, and 30+,), that are unplayable. We dont want to be online somewhere, where there are teens (guildwars, wow, eve online bla bla blah.....), i could go on.
It sucks../
You know, find some talent, mentor it right, (make the game, for god s...)...
I wont be using Vista....
Thanks for the best game i ever played though, (besides BG, but thats a different genre....), propebly, the last of its kind.
Just like us....
Pc is for Banking, Now.....
Enjoy!
(im bored, Lol...)...)
