History of hyperspace in the Elite universe.
- In the Dark Wheel novella, the faraway jump system was described. It was a netwok of interstellar nav beacons and worked like jump-gates. The ftl travel, between stations were refered to as Withcspace. This has never been implemented in any of the games.
- In Elite, there were instant jumps. Max range 7ly. Much like now, but with less range. The transition sequens between systems was called Witchspace. Thargoids could pull you out of Wtchspace in interstellar space.
- In FE2 and FFE, all ships had different jump range (up to 144ly). The jumps were semi relativistic. It took 1 week on the clock to complete a max range jump. For the plater IT took a few sec. The nickname Witchspace, was still in use.
The Dark Whell and Elite are not lore in ED, because the difference in universe.
FE2 and FFE technology may still be lore, but we don't know this.
All in all, the current method is most similar to the original Elite.
Lore or not lore, it's very likely that all the methods have used frame shifting (compression of space ahead of the vessel). All differences are down to game mechanics.
Witchspace is and always was a nickname for traveling thru compressed space.
The jumps weren't instant in original Elite. The clock would wind on by at least a few hours when you arrived at your destination.
