Capital Ships

Ah ha - we have lift off - capital ships are needed for factions or groups - eg guilds. And round we go again along that well worn path.

Elite dared to be different thirty years ago and its doing the same today. DB's bringing us the game he wants to play. Many of us may be what you call "fanboys", but what we really are those that share his vision. We want to play a game that dares to be different. I am absolutely fascinated to see what playing multiplayer without having to deal with guilds and player groups who are so strong they stomp all over other players.

Completely agree.

But of course he has the right to ask for capital ships as others mentioned. Perhaps Braben might be persuaded. To be honest I hope it will never happen.
I myself feel no need for them whatsoever. It just is not how I envision Elite game play at all, being an old Frontier addict. On the contrary I think capital ship game play will most likely introduce a lot of trouble comparable to what we see in EVE. It is one of the reasons I keep far away from that game.

Do the capital ships even fly about?

Up to now they are static and are their own frame of reference, more like a station that can hyperspace about, a mobile base for fighters.
Capital ship play might just mean sitting in orbit.

I also would like capital ships and know many people who are keeping an eye on this game but aren't buying it because having those is essential to their gameplay.

The game's not going to please everyone, I'd like the game to be believable, to me an individual owning a 2 km long military ship with a crew of 7000 isn't believable.
I can't see the large factions allowing it and the running costs would be astronomical. As someone has said, it's akin to an individual or a small group owning an aircraft carrier.

Elite : Dangerous - The epic space game where you're free to go anywhere in the galaxy, and free to be anything I want you to be.

This is a game where you are the commander of a spaceship.
It can be a really small ship.
It can be a medium sized ship with other people in it.
It can be a pretty large ship with a crew.

Yep.. we love all that. We're picturing that Anaconda with our name on it right now...

But wait.. here comes someone and says hey guys.. what if I wanted to command a large ship with a bunch of other crew?

 OMGZ GET AWAY FROM OUR GAME

Wow. Very well worded. +rep incoming...

I know it has all been said before but...

Well, I was extremely interested in this game until I read that it will not be possible to own or command a capital ship (carrier/cruisers).

So in short I will unlikely be supporting ED with my almighty dollar, I'm sorry Frontier, but I just cant abide once again having my demographic be ignored. Believe it or not there are people out there that are wholly disinterested in flying a fighter or a corvette.

Ok then bye... Go back to playing Eve. This game is for those of us who are wholly disinterested in owning very large ships and playing middle-management simulators... Horses for courses ey? ;-)

Thats your choice. This is just not the scope of the game. besides those types of ships would be big and bulky anyways there are multi crew ships like the anaconda which seems to me to be nice enough.

and who knows they can always make larger ships down the road but I think to me thats not a big issue. i am glad that the ships are not all very small like the sidewinder but that there there will be a nice selection and with hardpoints you have even more configuration too.

I dont need "cap ships" in a space game to enjoy the space game. Will leave that to star citizen. :).

You're misrepresenting both what the OP is asking for and our responses to it. You want to roll your eyes about open mindedness, but you're using a straw man argument which isn't very fair or open minded.

The OP doesn't just want larger ships with a crew, he wants an entirely separate game mechanic specific to capital ships. Maybe it could work, maybe it would be fun, but it is no small request and it would change the game significantly from what many of us think of as Elite. So be that good or bad, let's not pretend it is as trivial as you are implying.

IMHO Elite has always been more 'Trotter's Independent Trading' than 'Star Wars'. It's your opportunity to be the 'Del Boy' of the space lanes.

(Caution! This post probably will not travel well outside of Blighty).

Understood in Ireland anyway ;)

Just what would the spacecraft equivalent be of a Reliant Regal? Whatever it is, I want one.

Well that was not the gist of my reaction at all.
You are free to want it in, just as I am to reject it.

I feel in Elite a big capital military ship like a carrier is something large super rich corporations might own or governments, planetary alliances etc. In Elite it was never the philosophy to put the player in that position. Personally I would like to keep it that way. In Elite commanders don't dabble on that scale just as we don't do fleet management either or craft our own weapons, shovels, and clothing either. This has nothing to do with being open minded or not. I like the focus the Elite series always had and I hope Braben will stick to it. Because the strength of a game on this never before seen immense scale is to be able to keep a tight focus on the design philosophy. Otherwise it will dilute and lose itself and fail in the end.

They're just fanboys... and that's okay. Pay no attention to them.

Not exactly. How does a single player (and that's the core premise of this game - one pilot, one ship) afford such a ship? The Impeccable is about 2,000m long - you're not going to get much of one of those for a billion credits. That's a lot of saving up to do....

While I'll not take this as a personal attack ;) not all of us have access to the alpha forums, or time to read through the DDF archive to go back over well-worn arguments. You might have to be more patient with us who didn't have time and/or money to invest in the game at an earlier stage.

OPs point had some validity in him asking the question - although his toys-out-the-pram approach wasn't going to work for him on here.

In my post I mentioned that *if* there was to be some kind of clan/guild operations in the future then Capital Ships would represent force projection for them, but until then they are useless in the hands of players - so you are not going to see one without the other.

And yes this game is DBs vision - I support him and all of you that have helped along the way to make sure we finally got a true sequel to Elite - but once it's released, unlike the previous games that were limited by technology, this one will really no longer be *his game* as hundreds and thousands of players start to make it their own.

After release, if they want the game to continue beyond a couple of years online then they will need to listen to the majority of their players - not just the alpha backers.

Edit: I am not necessarily saying *I* support it either, but I'm being pragmatic about the future and the game will need to grow otherwise the end game could get boring rather quickly
