Horizons Noob Question about Starting out with ED for the first time...Season1/Season2?

I just bought and started playing ED. Love it!! [yesnod]
I only bought the original ED ( season 1 ).
If I buy season 2, will I have all those new features as I start fresh into the ED universe having really not done anything yet w/ my career?
If so, I'd like to have more game / more options / more to-do, and would purchase that before I continue playing, right?

OR, Do I need to play season 1 first and complete (something) before I do season 2?

This is where I'm confused.

Please Explain it to me. Thank You. [noob]

Season 2 has everything Season 1 has Plus all the extras that have been added in season2, you do not need to start over, if you like the game the best bet is to get the lifetime pass if possible, otherwise you need to buy each season....
Review the forums and talk to others that are playing before you make the decision, as there are a lot of issues then need to be resolved. People are very passionate about the game (on both sides) and so Far FD have left people with more questions than answers on which way the game is going, to be 100% honest, I do not think they them self's know yet. proceed with caution.

They have a 10 year development plan. They know where the game is going, or rather, where they want it to go. We just can't see it yet.

Horizons is a much more fleshed out version of ED than the original "Space Only" version. With the new reduced price plan, you can get the whole game as it currently stands for a laughably LOW price of admission!

Its a no brainer decision really.

I haven't actually upgraded yet from the original to horizons, I think landing/driving on planets would be boring after the first dozen times and the RNGineers (from what I've read) is just another version of grind I can do without. I enjoy the original options (bounty hunting, mining, trading etc), and readily admit I've gotten my monies worth. I've decided not to upgrade (if I do) until I see fixes to a lot of the issues (I won't list them, just skim the forums). That's just on principle though, the price of the upgrade is worth it IMO.

Enjoy the game!

Ok, imagine all the Seasons as DLC but instead of just adding new areas like in other games they add content (planet landings, multicrew etc).
Also imagine that DLC is being released in yearly DLC season passes.

Your save game is persistent so you can update later if you wish and just carry on where you were with the new features now unlocked - Key updates, optimisations and fixes are done even to people without the latest version, its just the new content that you'll miss out on if you don't buy season 2.

Yes you will have more options if you get the DLC before starting but it won't significantly hamper your progress as the learning curve is a bit of a brick wall at first until you master the basics and it's kinda nice.

The other option is to go long term and wait for season 3 presumably available for pre-order in October/November. It's not yet 100% but we assume it'll include all previous seasons so you won't have to buy 1 then 2 then 3. As others have said lifetime pass is an expensive but alternative option if it comes back on sale.

Personally I'd recommend playing a good month or so and deciding if you want to stick with it. There's a steam sale due shortly that may change things if the DLC goes on sale, otherwise find out if you enjoy the game first and decide what you want to do after.

If you need advice starting out send me a message or post a thread in the newcomers sub-forum, people there are usually pretty friendly :)

WOW! You're denying yourself some excellent gameplay all based on some erroneous assumptions. ;) While I don't spend every waking minute of my ED sessions on planets, the amount of additional gameplay that one addition provided over the base game was HUGE!

I still spend the bulk of my time in the background sim, but having access to all those additional planetary bases alone is worth the cost of the upgrade. What is it now for existing 1.6 owners? 15 bucks?

I know it is something ridiculously cheap, to the point of that not taking advantage of it borders on insanity. lol! ;)

WOW, great posts! THANK YOU! I plan on adding Horizons now, and will keep current as seasons come out if I'm still liking Ed and playing.

Just to follow this up. Steam and Frontier sale just hit.

Horizons expansion is now 33% off or £13.40 in Uk moneys making it roughly the price of a cinema ticket. <- I only know this because I went for the first time after loosing my student discount today. Needless to say i'm disgusted at what they are charging for often under 2 hours entertainment these days... :p

I see no reason why Frontier would let us have Season 1, 2 and 3 for the price of just Season 3; that makes no sense from a business, or financial standpoint.

Because how hard is it to develop for people across 5 different versions? Very, the QA budget would go through the roof. Better to keep as many people on the current version as possible rather than have fragmented stuff.

We've been doing it with several of our products for years.
Blizzard has managed it just fine with their branched coding for each Expansion.

Sensible code branching is rather easy to maintain. :)
