UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

- crashed ships found near barnacles.. who was first, the barnacle grow from the crashed cargo 1km away of the crash site? or the ship crashed when getting closer to the barnacle?

My theory on the crashed anaconda is that it was purely a mechanism to lead us to a barnacle. People had been whining pretty hard here that we hadn't found one, and then the galnet story was released complete with hints on finding the ship (and therefore barnacle). As it happens a barnacle was found in Merope the same day.

It's in the in-game description quoted on the very first page of this thread.

Just pursuing this for the sake of science/accuracy ... exactly which in-game description are you referring to (sorry, I don't see one in post #1 of this thread). Also - are you sure the description in question doesn't originate from a user submitted galnet article?

I do have a distinct memory of the community coining the term "barnacle" but I may well be wrong.

Edit: OK, do you mean this ... "They are associated with recently discovered alien entities nicknamed 'Large Barnacles' by interstellar explorers."? Hmmm, OK that's from the descriptive text for the Meta-Alloy material so I guess I was mistaken since that's obviously come straight out of FD towers.

I also want to mention that everyone at some point agreed that the UAs were looking for a ship in Merope, a week or so later, we find this big ass capital ship sitting on top of a barnacle. Was this the ship the UAs were looking for? Are the UAs even looking for something? Or are they waiting for something to happen in Merope just like the Feds are?

"Everyone" did not agree about that at all. I don't even remember it being raised as a theory.

The small curvy stripe, represents the California Nebula.

The big curvy shape is the Pleiades Nebula

and the smallest of the three shapes is the Witch-head nebula.

Originally you were very sure that the large curvy shape was Barnard's Loop. Now you're saying the large curvy shape looks like the Pleiades. This is sort of confirmation bias is exactly what I warned about; you're making the facts fit the theory.

Sorry but No.
The name Barnacles was in Meta-Alloys description when they first showed up on the market.
Moreover, a couple of folders, wrongly named BARNICLES showed up in game files as well ;)
I still remember when we asked MB if it was a naming mistake, causing the Barnacles to not show up in game ...

EDIT: written before your edit... :D

So, guys...
Lurking in for some time without making any comments, and not accounting for the recent small disputes among wich theory is right or wrong or whatnot about barnacles.

Couple things are striking me about barnacle defenses being sighted here and there : That Farragut battle cruiser and his escort spotted at MEROPE 2A's barnacle is clearly Fed as per IFF Faction displayed on the holo-target information.

Yet, I didn't see any evidence toward skimmers and turrets that were spotted earlier around other barnacle being from any origin at all (Fed, Imp, Alliance or any Corp or Power).
We know that settlements, bases, ruins, wrecks and whatnot have in common to have some markings, logo or brand onto them.
I saw that amazing work community have done on the thread related to wreck POI's, sourcing data around serial numbers and theorizing about them being wich part or other piece of that theorized kind of structure/ship.

My open Question to the Canonneers out there is the following : have we had examined and documented closely those ground defenses and saw if there were any markings / serial / logo of any kind?
And related to that is if the Farragut hovering the MEROPE 2A's Barney having any of them (be those different or alike)?

I would love to help cover that interrogation of mine but I have to say my IRL two-wheeled SRV met the ground pretty hard on a 1g planet lately, leaving the pilot with an injured shoulder, so being stranded at his Imperial apartments with medical interdiction to fly...

get well soon Soban!

So I'm currently at Aries Gw-w D1-52 (looking for UA's for fragments) and I keep on getting Signal sources that i can't locate? like i hear one pop up and it notifies me but its not on the list, Just a bug? or am i blind and missing a simple signal
Nope seems that when i find one they just take a bit to really spawn whoops

Check that you're on top of the destination lists in your nav (left) panel, USS's tend to appear on your position or very close, so way up the list since it's sorted by distance of stellar bodies / systems short to long.

Found out it just seems to be taking a while to spawn the signal in the nav panel whoops

Thank you :)

Damnit shouldn't have wrote that last bit, everyone is sending best wishes instead of sciencing :p

Ah, yes, that too.
The panels do have a few second refresh rate, so usually I cycle between them as it refresh them immediately (mostly seen when checking a contact bounty, if you just scanned him you have to cycle the tabs to get the bounty displayed)

My theory is that the defenses were set up to defend the barnacles from being shot and put in an empty state. As to who is guarding them I think the obvious (feds) is a good guess because it has been broadcast with the ships. I mean they didn't have to have any markings so the fact that they are federal seems significant in that regard

First and foremost, don't get me wrong : this is also my *belief* that those ground defense are from Fed origin.
But I believe you misread me : the question is about who put those ground defenses?
Not about why there is ground defenses.
Our shared belief of them being of Federal origin is just speculation, and we haven't ruled out / proved it wrong that it could be from another entity, be it power, corp or super-faction.

The fact is that a battle cruiser is a bit of a quick escalation from some perimeter defense like turrets and skimmers are.
It's a full scale war squadron/flotilla/fleet that's been dispatched here.

So either we are missing something that happened recently in MEROPE or in Galnet (yup, didn't picked that one very far - but got me thinking : is there local ingame Galnet news in system with no stations ? Now that we can check from our ships UI it could be good to check ?).
Or the previously sighted ground defenses are from another entity or faction/super-faction (and thus that Farragut is a cold war style very aggressive answer / force demonstration -- and i know, this is also pure speculation from me).

As we didn't prove those defense were related to Fed, I believe this is worth checking.
And the logo/brand/serial thingy might be a good way of doing it if similarities are found between those on barnacles perimeter defenses and those on the Farragut himself or his escorts.

Greetings Commanders,
Rear Admiral Midnight Ninja here - while I'm not reporting in a newly discovered barnacle this time, I would like to humbly request the following piece of art I made be considered by the collective community for use as a decal on Canonn Scientists' vessels. I realize that there is not a significant in-game reward for any level of participation in the search for and science conducted on Barnacles, which can take many hours and turn up empty handed frequently - so perhaps this would suffice. I hope everyone enjoys!

P.S. Michael - maybe this can be added in?

A great piece of work, and sorry to pee on your fries - but one has already been done :)

Oh I see what you are saying now, my apologies for misunderstanding. I hadn't considered that factions may be fighting for control of the barnacles but I like it! Definitely worth checking out the automated defenses for markings of any kind.

My personal storyline theory has the superpowers working together in secret to bioengineer the barnacles from thargoid cells, with the sole purpose of creating meta alloys.

When players took so much of the meta alloy that the barnacles stopped working, defenses were setup to protect them. First there were turrets and skimmers then the big ships showed up.

I believe that the barnacles are sentient, and destroying them is not just irritating their creators, but is about to send them rogue and somehow evolve into a serious threat to humankind.

All speculation on my part with no real facts to back it up but I'm not sure how much we can figure out for sure of the story at the moment. However, I think signs are pointing to something happening soon that may help nudge us along. I'm hoping anyway
