VR Users: Questions about the positional audio

  1. What drivers do the CV1 speakers use? NVidia HDMI audio? Or does it have its own via USB?
  2. Is there any configuring that needs doing to get it to work? Standalone, and with Elite specifically?
  3. Is it also "surround" sound? I assume it must be. I know it's 2 speakers, but the surround sound processing that make things "sound" like behind, in front etc (like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/DSS2-Dolby-Processor-CAN-EU/dp/B0077MEDTI)
  4. Is it actually any good?

Rift headphones use an Oculus driver, no configuring needed it shows up as a device in the audio control panel.

Sound is really good, as you move your head you get positional audio.

From what I've read, the Oculus Rift built-in headphones are designed specifically for that, so you should get perfect surround sound from them. In addition, they'll do something your surround sound speaker system won't: vertical space. Hearing things below and above you. This is why Palmer Luckey said that even if you have higher quality headphones you could use, using the built-in ones will give you a better VR experience.

What is the actual quality like, in terms of mix and clarity and resolution?

I'd love to hear comparisons with anyone using a 5.1 setup. I've been assuming I will stick to my 5.1 - but if the headset audio is quite good, maybe it's worth a go.

The Rift headphones are surprisingly good. I was previously using some Sennheiser U320's (not the best but good enough) for gaming and I haven't noticed any reduction in sound quality.
The microphone is pretty good as well, at least as far as voice commands go, I haven't used it for talking to another CMDR as yet.

I've been using the DSS2 (link in the op) for years. I started with 5.1 speakers which is ideal. But having speakers isn't always practical so I then bought some Turtle Beach headphones with 5 actual speakers. When they broke they sent a DSS2 and stereo headphones and I was amazing. That was only slightly worse than 5.1 speakers. Then I got some really good headphones and they are amazing. I am very comfortable with the idea of stereo conversion
