Er...no, just excited for both games. ;)

...Cool.

Nice pics - of the loin stirring kind that made me put down some of my hard earned cash in the first place.

It's the context of those ships that I'm clamoring to see more of. But an age has passed and I beginning to think they're ship fetishists with little interest in much else. I mean, the universe in all its majesty should also be the star of the show right?

You did show me a glorious pic of a big mining facility but that was concept art. That helipad pic up above far from inspires. But I guess not much can be done about that for now given their focus has been, well, just, lots and lots of ships, ship videos, the next great space ship, ship brochures, and then, well, a variants upon variants of all the ships.

Kind of like 'World of Tanks' only space ships instead I guess, (and bizarrely a few fish thrown in).

I really wish they'd taken a more holistic approach with the game and their initial focus. Hell the other day I even saw a few them relegated to working out the economy with a few scraps of paper and a home made board game. Desperate.

As a humble request, if you ever come across any images (not concept art but in game) focusing on the universe itself, I'd love to see them.

The two other cockpit shots look cool (if a bit impractical), but the landing pad shot... meh. I guess the thing that bothers me at this stage is that it looks like just meshes, with very little function to be discerned. I admit I was afraid of the same thing with Elite when they showed the paintover station interior shot, I was wondering if they just had a static mesh done or if the pads actually worked with moving parts etc. - ED really delivered on that part, even including a (back then very buggy due to netcode issues) pad reservation system.
But eh, Alpha 1 of Elite didn't have docking either.

A neat detail I like about the SC cockpits is that they include the holo-emitters as bright point light sources, makes it a lot more believable to have holographic instruments. ED has the "oh it's just there" thing going, which is functional and may even be possible in the future for all we know, but it's a bit more of a leap of faith ;)

BTW Boomotang, I still say ED was and probably stilla is moving faster than SC. I gave my points above and nobody bothered to counter them :D

For an explanation for this, I think you need to look no further than the fact that ED built a ship or two so they could test and get on building the rest of the key elements of the game, where as SC diverted all their manpower to building a huge showroom of ships to the exclusion of everything else - in order to flog them. As mentioned, even now with the economy for example, they have a few non technical dudes messing about with scraps of paper and a home made board game.

Its a question of strategy not technology.

Still, I do like the cockpits and the variety of cockpits from one ship to the other. When ED is finished, I would not like all the cockpits to feel 'samey'.

I haven't been following SC too closely but those ships look like they're designed to be capable of atmospheric flight. The Space Shuttle's got tyres.

As to why don't they just dangle the craft in zero G outside the spacestation. Well does SC have artificial gravity? Maybe having the ships stuck to the side with artificial gravity is for safety.

Ships have tires for landing on planets.

That landing pad has artificial gravity. It's the only place that has AG on the broken moon map.

*sigh, still cant figure out out to delete/merge.

Now that you point it out. Also I was always disappointing with the way those ships look. Even when I was a card carrying SC fan. I can understand why people compare them to pictures of ships on the front of lego kits.

And something about that picture...

You can just kind of tell its more like being on a 'map' rather than being in the vastness of space. Know what I mean? The illusion of space just isn't there. And its more than just knowing those stars in the background are just part of an image stamped on the inside of a box I'm flying around in.

I tend to disagree their ships look pretty good imho. The stars you see in the middle are just the reflection of the sun on the dust particles. They are not stars.

The vastness of space will be even more and is there. Arena Commander is a glimpse of the Persistant Universe.

Just an idea of scale.

I'm aware of that. I mean the illusion for me is broken because I'll always know when I see stars, they are just part of an image stamped on the inside of box I'm flying around in.

This remains to be seen. Right now I have a bad feeling about small instances, sky boxes, all connected with cut scenes.

And that's not my idea of scale.

*omg did it again. Does anyone know how to delete / merge a post. I keep asking?

Seen it. far too much 3PV with gamepads for my taste. I appreciate they say they just want to show the ships ...yet again.

But I really think they're just getting people used that play style for the future. I mean who does it impress? People who tune in who prefer 1PV with joysticks? I really don't think so. Expect a lot more people showing up with preference for 3PV and gamepad.

I tend to disagree their ships look pretty good imho.

I appreciate that. But ever since someone posted this image on this thread, I just can't get the association out of my mind.

I have a challenge for all of you - lets see how long you can all go with only posing constructive commentary? Here's the catch, if it keeps up with the constant hate toward SC and negative commentary then we'll start with a 24hr thread closure and see how it goes from there.

If you have something that you don't like then by all means say so but try to balance it with an awareness that some people are actually quite keen of the game and constantly hearing "I don't like it" might start grating.

This thread will not degrade into an anti SC thread.

On the balance of it I think Star Citizen will end up being a great game, it may not be to everyones tastes but then neither is Elite Dangerous. They have a mammoth task ahead of them, and it's okay to wonder if they will pull it off, however with the capital raised I don't think those worries will become real. Many people have said ED couldn't be as good as it is, but most of us would defend ED, I think.

Have a little faith folks, give them the benefit of the doubt as you asked others to do for Frontier.

Does anyone know how to delete / merge a post

You can click the
multiquote_off.gif
button for several posts and reply to them all in one go, or you can go as if to write a new post then copy/paste the contents into another post you're editing.

As I recall, you can delete a post for a few minutes after posting by clicking "edit" then "advanced", and it's in there somewhere. I'll have a look after writing this post.

If you're constantly feeling the need to merge and delete posts, you may want to consider giving it a few minutes before hitting "reply". Once I've satiated the urge to type out my response, I often find a little pause helps me see the wider issue. At that point I usually either write a more considered post or decide my post didn't add anything in the first place. Often it's enough just to scroll down the reply page to see the comments that have come in while I was posting.

EDIT: I tell a lie, there's no delete button. It might only be enabled in certain sub-forums, or I might have just imagined it :)

Thanks Andrew,

And, err.. Like I said

I do like the cockpits and the variety of cockpits from one ship to the other. When ED is finished, I would not like all the cockpits to feel 'samey'.

Aside from that, I think it's time I went and made a cheese sandwich...

My own view on the ship design is that the SC ships look like someone has mixed up a bunch of airfix kits and then tried to see what they could make out of them, they seem like a mixed up load of influences from modern earth vehicles, helicopters, planes, boats, fork lift trucks....etc..

The elite ships might look like cheese wedges but I like them better, I haven't seen an ED ship that has made it past the sketch phase that I didn't like.

About half of the SC ships I have seen work for me, and there are some I really like, but some of them look bloody awful.

As far as HUDs go some SC ones look better than others, I don't like those lists of stuff down the side of the hornet one.
EDs HUD could mainly do with a choice of colours, fed up of orange now.

In the landing pad screenshots posted I liked the representation of a star. The glare was there but there were no leans flares to spoil the view. Rather refreshing really.

For those like Bain who are interested in the Persistant Universe side of the game. That is still far off but we will soon see more. Right now the focus is on getting the basic dogfighting to work smoothly just like it was in Elite Dangerous alpha.

The next thing after the Dogfighting Module (Arena Commander) is the FPS module. Where you will be able to play a tactical shooter like game in a space station. There will be features like EVA and Magnetic boots with 0 G movement. It will have a cover system as well. That module will test and balance the FPS section of the game. It will also include ship boarding. It will be released after Arena Commander 2.0 (Which will have multi crew ships like the Constallation)

The release schedule for Star Citizen looks like this at the moment.

Arena Commander 0.8 (29th of May)

Arena Commander 0.9

Arena Commander 1.0 (Estimated end of June)

Arena Commander 2.0 (Estimated August)

FPS Module (Q4 2014)

Arena Commander 3.0 (Q1 2015)

Squadron 42 Alpha (Q1 2015)

Planetside Module (Q2 2015)

Persistant Universe Alpha (Q3 2015 until Q1 2016)

Persistant Universe Beta (Q1 2016 until Q3 2016)

Release (Q4 2016)

Note this is my estimate and i have been following this game's development since 2013. So this is my realistic estimate on the release of Star Citizen and it's modules.
