Why no 3rd person?

Falcon 4.0 has 3rd person and it's useless for flying. When I play War Thunder realistic, I fly first person only and it's easier. How did people think that 3rd person made things easier anyway - where's the evidence that this is even a thing?
I don't know about you, but I played War Thunder with mouse and 3rd person is easier for me than nose-cam view (cockpit view without the cockpit blocking sight). But I think that's because of the mouse aim, with joystick it's probably better to use nose-cam (even just for the extra zoom, better view of the front), with mouse aim you need 3rd person view to be able to see what your rudder and ailerons are actually doing (while the supercomputer flies your mouse-aim plane) and apply keyboard input corrections.

How about calling it a "virtual surroundings simulation"? I mean, our ships have powerful sensors, that are able to generate sound based on what's around the ship, at all times -- so why not make the exterior cam a "neuro-link VR sim"? ;)

To make it even cooler it should display everything as wireframe during the transition (cyberspace-style!) at first and then quickly fill in with textures... mmmm...
I think in Elite universe they have seriously handicapped computers, so no VR, i mean why else do you need a docking computer weighing several tons to dock a ship with a station, something easily done by a smartphone today...
just kidding , your rationale is good and productive

So many hostile responses on this forum. I get it. You're extremely passionate about your game, but chill out.

Every flight sim I've ever played used 1st and 3rd person perspectives. Being able to view your entire ship does have it's advantages, but so does flying from the cockpit. I would prefer 3rd person if I had the choice, unless I was in VR.
No.
No flight sim has used 3rd person. Otherwise it's not a sim.

That said, I don't think it's "just" PVP players that would be affected-- the additional situational awareness that would be provided by 3rd person vs 1st person would essentially drastically change the difficulty scope of the game, which would result in either a game that's "tuned" for being in first person and trivially easy for people in third, or tuning it for people in third person and impossible for anyone in first.
1) I disagree with the conclusion. 3rd person would be more difficult, not easier.
2) We have a lot of things that change the game difficulty. KB vs gamepad vs HOTAS. Freelook. VR. VocieCommand. All of these change your awareness and reaction speed; several far more than an over-the-shoulder view of your ship.

This isn't a ground combat game. There are no walls to see around nor over.

And BTW: all the information available in 3rd person is already there. What do you imagine I might know beacsue of a 3rd person view that I can't find out already?

3rd person camera is that itch that comes up every now and then, and rightfully so.
Debug camera helped but I would still like to able to control my ship while in 3rd person. No hud elements ofc. If combat is an issue because of performance, advantage or immersion whatever, then by all means force me back into canopy view whenever there are hostiles around - I'd have no problem with that. I just want to get a sence of scale without beeing forced to fork out for VR equipment.

Everybody I know who has come into this game has asked me why there is no such camera and I have no good answer. It's ok to be the odd ball out sometimes and not copy what everybody else is doing in a pursuit to be unique. But a fully functional human being getting a wheelchair just to be odd is going to get tiresome fast.

No flight sim has used 3rd person. Otherwise it's not a sim.

Does this logic apply to all simulation games? Is Forza Motorsport not a racing sim because I can control my car from multiple perspectives? This also applies to other sim games like, Euro Trucker and Farming Simulator. Every sim game I've ever rexperienced offered a 3rd person view.

One of the most satisfying things about sims is now and then checking the 3rd person view of whatever it is your operating/driving/flying.

I can see how an 'action' 3rd person view would affect combat, fair enough no such options exists.

However, news have it that Doom is getting a photo mode today. Yes, Doom. Photo mode. That's like putting a cinema system into a Formula One car!

Meanwhile, our comfy and spacious SUV has to do with this beyond-clunky, frustrating to use, and frankly embarrassing 8-track thing.

Absence of a proper photo mode in something as infinitely photogenic as Elite: Dangerous is heresy.

I'd love to see a proper 3rd person camera mode, as its one of my favorite things to do in space/flying/racing games. Right now the debug camera is still painfully slow to operate.

At least let larger ships zoom out further to allow us to take better shots. It can be difficult getting Conds, Corvettes, and Cutters in frame with a good view.

3rd person camera would be okay if its used for screengrabs and such, not for playing the game.
also as for 3rd person views in driving games.. they make me facepalm, I mean.. you can't see the corner apex if the car is blocking the view lol.

"not ok" as in "I wouldn't find it useful"? Ok. Cool. I doubt I would fight in 3rd person either.

"not ok" as in "others shouldn't be allowed to do it"? I don't see why not. Doesn't hurt me or my experience of the game. Let them have at it.

Why not have pet space hamsters in the game? It isn't like you would have to have one if you didn't want one. Why tell some people that they can't have them and that they can't play the game their way? It's selfish and narrow minded. Many people clearly want them. FD are just being stubborn.
