Wow, here we all are playing at living on the frontier, and you're actually doing it. :)

And I agree, I've not seen anything yet that has made me think an offline mode wasn't workable.

Fly safe.

....no, really.

The BGS makes no sense if there is only one player influencing it.

Your mental health status is questionable.
Or what did you take? I want to take that too.

I'm rather jealous actually. I could really use a 2 hour chopper flight to nowhere for a while. I do sympathize about the offline thing, sorry to hear that.

That would be because you don't know diddly about the internal workings of the game.

And don't tell me! I suppose YOU DO? lol! [rolleyes]

if for nothing else... Having a SINGLE PLAYER/Offline mode might have at least given us the ability to STAY with ONE VERSION indefinitely! That way, when Frontier releases yet another totally screwed up and broken update, at least we wouldn't be forced to install it, knowing full well in advance that we are basically shooting ourselves in the foot the minute we hit the UPDATE button! [weird]

What I wouldn't give for the option to ROLL BACK to the original Horizons 2.0 version. While it lacks the new mission system which I really like, and was the ONLY addition in 2.1 that was worth a darn... I would have gladly gone back to the original Bulletin Board if I could have the superior graphics quality in ULTRA for Planet Terrain, and a fully functional Docking Computer and Turret Fire Mode control!

Both of those popular features were broken by the .03 point update. Now we wait yet again, not for new features, but for 2 year old features to simply WORK AGAIN!

Its quite insane when you step back and look at it all from a distance. [wacko]

I have no idea what you're trying to say with most of what you typed, but if I understand correctly you tried downloading the most recent patch for Elite at a local library? Of course you are going to run into issues, they probably have a very slow connection or data limits so downloading a patch that's several GB size is going to take forever. What makes you think an offline mode would help that in any way? You would still need to get regular patches and updates even if you played the game offline, it's not like putting a game disc into your xbox.
Also consider reducing your intake of drugs and/or alcohol.

None of that has anything to do with your remark that you yourself dont understand why offline mode was cancelled.

It was cancelled because they didn't want to invest the time required to implement it! I wasn't part of the Kickstarter, but if I had been, I too would have been royally ticked off when they bailed on this previous promise to their early backers.

Sometimes the answer isn't some complex mumbo jumbo. And not everyone who is a big fan of the game obligated to be a blind Frontier cheerleader, complete with the official "Everything Works Great" Blinders and "All Going According to Plan" Spin Kit. ;)

The critics obviously care about the future of this game, otherwise we wouldn't be here. The bigger question is what are the fanboys doing here? If they hate the rest of us raising legitimate concerns and pointing out bugs and problems so much, why bother?

Surely they can live in their fantasy world where the game is perfect and requires no improvements from the safety of their computer room. No need to venture out onto these forums and get gobsmacked by the stark reality the rest of us live in.

Is it at all possible to respond somewhat on topic and without direct insults to whomever you're responding? This has nothing to do with 'fanboys' and 'blind cheerleaders' staying 'safe in their computer room' away from 'the stark reality' of some invisible majority you claim to be part of.

This is about you making claims you cant back up. If you tell me you haven't seen anything that makes you understand why offline was cancelled I believe you. But you not knowing the reason doesn't mean there is no reason. And when people point it out you cant suddenly claim you know the reason (they didnt want to do it or whatever), and you certainly dont have to make things all personal. If you care about it, go read up on it. If you dont, thats cool either. But its generally appreciated if you can do either one without insulting people.

Or at least, thats what the invisible majority in my computer room says, but maybe insulting people is perfectly normal in the stark reality where you live. :)

Sounds like you have some seriously limited internet connectivity.. and where you do, the throughput must be atrocious. I am deeply sympathetic.. I visited China for three weeks a year or so back and it felt like I had a leg chopped off. The trip was a ton of fun.. and after a while I just stopped caring about a lack of internet. When I did get internet the 'great firewall' was a potential factor to prevent me from using the tools I was use to as well.

Still.. the Northern Territory is an amazingly beautiful region. Even though I love my computer games... I think I'd far prefer waking up in front of a turquoise ocean, park myself on a beach, roam the national parks, dive in some amazing lagoons, hike the bush, etc.

Hopefully you can find a situation where you can get the best of both worlds :) Decent internet + all the rest.

Good points.

I suspect people's 'sharpness' on the internet is an artifact of only having 'first world problems' to deal with on a regular basis and simply losing perspective. Controversy in the first world often revolves around who slept with whom, what movie star did what, and how life-ending it is to not be able to play a video game because it isn't behaving in some conceived perfect way. Day to day conflict doesn't involve militia raiding your village, kidnapping, or machete. Day to day challenges don't involve finding clean water or adequate food. It involves a lack of sugar in a latte, a chair not being quite level with the floor, a table with a breadcrumb from the previous person, a pillow that isn't quite properly fluffed, or a lack of ice in one's drink. :)

I've lived in a bunch of places around the world since childhood, and grew up in a military family. While not perfect in any sense of the word.. it certainly helped give some perspective. I've seen happy kids on the street without shoes, dirt between their toes, and playing with a tireless bicycle wheel and a stick. I even played with them at that age. I've seen the poorest of poor people open their arms to strangers and share food, despite not having a car or a stable income. A distant relative drove me in his car that was falling apart. Despite being 100F outside and the windows couldn't roll down. The drivers door was barely on it's hinges. Yet he laughed all the way about his car's condition while he proudly took me out and about.

Its all about perspectives. I'm not perfect and I get my panties (i'm male by the way) into a bunch about silly first world things myself. I'm not immune to it in the least. But I do try to step back and widen perspective.

Not sure what my point is now. In any case whatever it was.. Elite is Elite. Enjoy it if you do. If not, there is a heck of a lot of other fascinating things in this world to keep us occupied.. rather than quarreling in a forum over spilled milk or a feature or lack thereof in a video game. Peace. :)
