Has the Advanced Scanner had a makeover.

In the past I've always explored equipped with both the 'Advanced Discovery Scanner' and the 'Detailed surface Scanner'.
Have things now changed, do you still need the 'Detailed Surface Scanner'?
.
I'm asking because I recently fitted the 'Advanced Discovery Scanner' just to do a little exploring within the bubble while doing missions, so I could use the data to extend some goodwill with Engineers. I was surprised to find I could now scan the main star and all the discovered planet bodies without a 'Detailed Surface Scanner' being fitted. Can someone please confirm this because if so it frees up an internal slot which could be used for other things.

It's possible to do a surface scan without a detailed surface scanner (but you still need to fly towards the body you want to scan(. However, it gets lower prices when it comes to selling the data as a Detailed Surface Scan module will find more. Additionally, soon (according to the recent released FD Newsletter) the Detailed Surface Scanner will also reveal the elements on the planet. Hope this helps.

As far as im aware you can scan stars, planets and moons without the DSS but you dont get a detailed scan thus reducing your profit(not sure how much by though) but you can still earn first discovered by. For exploring i would still reccomend a DSS but just scanning systems theres no need for one

Basically,

Level 1 scan = Discovery scanner honk only. Provides basic info about all bodies in range (all in system if it's the advanced discovery scanner). Low monetary value.
Level 2 scan = Detailed scan without the DSS. Provides some more info about a targeted body and yields more of a reward. Also allows for first discovery tags.
Level 3 scan = Detailed scan with the DSS. Provides full info on an astronomical body, with full monetary value and also grants first discovery tags.

Thank you Cmdrs that cleared up my confusion, so I'll still be taking the Detailed Surface Scanner with me when I leave the bubble.
.
Also need to ask if there is a known problem with the 'Detailed Surface Scanner'. I did go out of the bubble on a day trip to gather data within 1000ly and noticed on the odd occasion when scanning planet bodies the surface scanner would default to showing the speed/distance information on the left side of the hud instead of the scanned planet details like 'High Metal Content' or 'Water World' so I was having to go back to the System map to get the info on the scan.

It's always been a little confusing, especially since hints are rare that the Discovery Scanners do surface scans as well. It helps to realize that it's a Detailed Surface Scanner, not a Detailed Surface Scanner.

If it's landable you need to go into the system map to see the details rather than the speed/distance info for landing now. It's a pain but I don't think FD have responded to the people who don't like it with anything encouraging...

Annoyingly, Frontier thought it would be a good idea to do that on the landable bodies. It's one of their trademark features that is so well thought through everyone keeps asking if it's a bug :)

It's possible to do a surface scan without any sort of scanner at all (though you'll need to have discovered the bodies some other way - either visiting them earlier, or having a wingmate honk them)

Thank you again for the info I would never have guessed that one. I don't like this new feature either and I consider it annoying and pointless, wouldn't risk a landing without more information from the map, sorry just seems a bit silly to me.
