I want clarify a post I made earlier about the proposed changes to the Detailed surface scanner, and how it might help in Barnacle hunting.
Apparently the scanner will indicate the types of materials available on the planet. This is in the future, but hopefully sooner than Soon(tm). The idea is that we have some idea of which very rare materials are dropped. When searching for suitable planets for Barnacle hunting, we could use the DSS and eliminate those planets that do not have suitable materials. If the scanner provides a general area via the surface map where materials could be found, or an overlay of the planet then we can compare this with the types of places that Barnacles can be found, i.e. sandy-bottomed canyons, and search in these locations.
Of course at present this is speculation until we have the scanner and can evaluate it for ourselves.
