I put up a video for the meta alloys CGs how to farm them with limpets. It's on reddit.
they have been found only in ros, because people have been looking for them in ros, just that.
I'd say, just check every other USS as well, they might appear in more than one type but we don't know yet. Cheers!
Many interesting observations lately, from many smart people here!
My favorites:
1) UP could be made of two UAs mating, a male and a female: to support this also the different sizes of the two "heads".
2) UP could be in the action of splitting itself in two new UAs, like cells do to reproduce themselves (mitosis).
3) UP could be a new kind of Federation biscuit we should not know about yet.

I realize I am in the minority here... but as a law abiding Federation citizen (a simple space trucker with nothing to hide) I feel I must speak on the record.
... all this Barnacle / oid / UA nonsense? It's really none of our business. Let's get real fellow commanders... I think we should report this "alleged" alien probe sighting to the Federation Navy and leave it to the experts from there. No need to cause a panic.

You mean those "experts" that are trying their best to interrupt any independent research by taking aggressive actions against (more or less) innocent pilots?
Those "experts" that are claiming everything they do is legal because they said so?

most appealing is hypothesis 3. I suspect the larger end would be filled with marshmallow/chocolate (70%cocoa minimum) mixture, and the smaller end with cream. Canonn could perhaps market it as "Arc's Choccy Cluster", or "Rizal's Repast". I would suggest the "Interstellar Jorki Bar", but that would be self-aggrandising, & I believe might fall foul of some ancient Sol trademarking issues with a similar chunky chocolate confection.
Enough tomfoolery, must go do some RL gardening (LZ- the roses really are looking good!)

So I was there when we found the UP. Although sadly it blew up... I had a general theory of what its pointing at.
The big thing on the back is the scanner/sensor? the probe part that is. That is scanning for something. What i dont know.
The front head that looks like a UA is the front. The thing that transmits data. Usually probes are launched from ships. (In this time frame anyway) and usually my guess that the probe is pointing to said ship so the ship can get all the data.
We do need to find another one to confirm its not pointing at merope... or.. it is but something else other than the sun.

I'd suggest the first order of business is a UP-UA hookup.
Comparison to see which end of the UP is the UA head.
Do they react to each other?
Separate testing on the UP to see what behaviour it shares with the UA.

Well. That might be next but the first to do. Is get a clear audio file. Clean. No back ground sounds. Just the UP.
After that find out where it points.
After start experimenting with it. UA and UP together. UP and barn together.
To be honest, my feeling is that the audio is flavour.
It requires too much outside knowledge and tools to lead on to the next phase in the story.
It is valuable work that enables us to speculate on their purpose, but it'd be lower down on my list.
