Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox

...are we there yet?

ED is not a sandbox. ED is a video game.
ED is not EVE. EVE is not ED.
There. Can we close this now? ;)

Dude, you are missing the real point of the discussion.

The real discussion here is not about wheter Elite is like EVE or not, it is about the fact that is there enough player driven content and interaction in Elite to keep us interested in the game for years to come, or is it just a grinding game where you make a good 30 hour run from worst to best class freighter.

Why would anyone want to grind from "worst" to "best" whatever in 30 hours and then consider that completion?

That's just about the worst way of playing Elite imagineable. It's NOT about maxing out a ship. Not at all!

Agreed. And only playing it for that would mean you are missing a feat portion of the whole. If anyone wants to play it like that, that's fine and part of the sandbox experience, but you would be missing so much by doing so.

I though that the original idea of Elite was to get the Elite status, no?

That doesn't mean maxing out a ship.

It means being an elite badass, with all different types of elements in the dynamic. I believe there's a whole thread from the developers about it in the Design Archives.

That whole board may be of use if you think you're going to get bored quickly.

I've seen accounts of people playing for a long, long time and not reaching Elite status.

Ok. So what else is there to do in the game then?

Exploration.
Progress in the military.
Gaining notoriety with the mercenaries.

Plus whatever else FD add to the game at a later date.

Some players want to have their hand held and a voice whispering in their ear to keep them entertained or engaged in a game.

Some others want a pair of boots, a ship to call home and the ability to go where no player has gone before. Literally.

Elite will be the second kind of game.

I think the main problem of constantly saying 'well, why do you not want part of the market to have this because I think they want it' is you end up with feature creep and a game that tries to cater to everyone and ends up catering to no-one. Take Rage for example. It's a shooter with crafting bits and racing bits. None of the three are that well implemented or in-depth, so they all come across as being not that good. It's kinda fun, but not that much fun. E:D should concentrate on what makes it different and what its good at, creating a universe that's fun and interesting to travel around. Making it so you can create your own corporations etc is obviously something that COULD be done, but it's not necessary just because its in EVE, or any other game.

All that you are describing means nothing. Please give me practical examples. What is there to do in the game besides grinding your way from your starting ship to the ship you wanted by trading goods from A to B or fighting?

You see?

People have given examples ad nauseum throughout this thread. You skipped a number of them to reply to (perhaps) the one that sounded most standoffish.

This is officially a circular argument.

(You could have taken my advice and gone to the design archive board and read for yourself.)

I don't know what you're into, man.

I've read many of the design archives, and I just don't see any other game mechanics there other than grinding your way towards the best ship by doing NPC missions to gain Elite rank by fighting, trading, mining and mapping.
