Design decision forum member

Hello All

My first encounter with the Elite world was FE2 on the Amiga 500, I later got hold of a copy of Elite and played that but was already too hooked on Frontier to give Elite much time of day. I too offerd up enough pieces of silver to get into the DDF. As others have stated I will be reading other forums and taking anything relevant to the DDF. If ED turns out to be a modern version of Frontier with some better graphics and a few more settled worlds to visit then Ill be a happy camper. As long as we dont get Elves, Ewoks, Wookies or cute little robots that bleep and chirp in a childlike comical fasion then there wont be too much for me to be vocal about.

Hi Styggron, yes I went for the DDF as well. Started out on the BBC B when in the 6th form, so had plenty of 'study time' to spend in the computer room when not helping 1st years write logo. Went on to CPC6128 and Atari STFM but never got on with FFE .

Yes, I feel that way too. Not to get the game that was pitched would be a breach of trust. Fortunately I doubt DB will be swayed, and will hopefully categorically say no to certain suggestions from the outset.

The general feeling I get from most people seems to be that they all want the game that David is planning anyway. There are a few people pushing for all kinds of things, but I believe the right decisions will be made in the end.

I am just happy to be a small part of such a wonderful thing :D

I'm hearing more sensible comments on this thread than I am on a lot of other threads. I only spent a mere £90, so I can only guess at the motivation of those who spent £300.

All I can ask is that those of you making suggestions on there take into account that the 25681 backers all did so having watched and read the videos and article updates that came out from David Braben etc.

Some of the suggestions I see bandied about from DDF members are radical and would considerably alter what has been advertised to everyone at this point.

One person in particular would seemingly change 90% of what I have specifically pledged money to play into something else entirely. Where as, I'm totally behind what I have heard and read David say.

I think I know who you're referring to ;) but you don't need to worry there I don't think. There is absolutely no way that anyone in the DDF can override David Braben. All decisions rest with him and the rest of the Frontier team.

I do expect a few tantrums in that regard when that simple fact is realised though, based on what I've seen so far on this forum... :D

There will always be people who write walls of text, voicing their wishes (for a game to be custom built to their own design) regardless of whether that would be good for everyone (anyone?) else.

DDF members are there to discuss and guide the development with feedback not dictate it in any way.

I have already seen responses to questions and polls on this forum from people who rather than thinking, "That isnt the way I want to play Elite, but I can see how others would and it would enhance the overall gameplay to include it.", voice "I dont want to be doing 'X', thats boring, it shouldn't be in the game at all". Hopefully the DDF forum rules/outline will encourage DDF members to see an overall picture rather than just narrow individual viewpoints.

I imagine processing 20k KS pledges and checking the details of all the people eligible for the various tiers (espcially those who are going to be part of DDF and Alpha testing) is a rather monumental task for FD at the moment - hopefully the Christmas, DavidB's birthday, KS Project end and New Year hasn't damaged the minds and livers of the FD staff too much ;)

I'm another who went for the DDF level pledge. To be honest I did it because it was about the most I could justifiably afford and because the Elite games have something magical about them and hold a special place in my heart.

In direct answer to the OP, yes I'm an original Elite player. I played as a wide eyed 11 year old boy who couldn't quite believe what he saw the first time he loaded up the tape in his 48k ZX Spectrum. This was more than a game, this was a universe to get lost in and I was at the age where I soaked it all up, I think I must have read the game manual and Dark Wheel hundreds of times in my 'reading' time before bed, and many of my dreams involved me dancing my Cobra MkIII between the stars :)

As for the DDF, for me personally I expect the golden rule number one to be that DB and FD have complete control over what goes in the game. I also believe that most people who pledged at the level to get in the DDF most likely have the best interests of the game at heart and are unlikely to want to ruin anything (Not that I think it will even be possible), I would also be suprised if they expected any special treatment. I can only speak for myself but I expect to receive no perks or special treatment in game, I want to play the same game as everyone else.

For me, I'm just happy to see the DDF as a once in a lifetime opportunity to sit that little bit closer to the development of a game I thought I would never see, and a game series which I love so much. If, as part of the DDF, I get to take some small part in helping to shape the new universe of Elite:Dangerous (within the boundaries defined by DB and FD) then all the better. I'm actually very excited to see how it all plays out.

I'm a DDF member, and I played Elite on the Beeb back in '83 or '84.

I have no delusions of grandeur regarding my membership. If they just share details and canvass general opinions and then make their own decisions, then that's fine. It's their game.

Likewise, I have no illusions about alpha or beta playability. I was in the Mists of Pandaria beta, and there were loads of "entitlement brats" whinging that they had been robbed because the game wouldn't run on their PC and that they therefore didn't have the "access" that they were promised. If it won't run on my PC then I will do everything I can to help diagnose and solve the problem, but I won't complain or about it, and I will have no sympathy with anyone who does not take a constructive attitude.

im also a DDF and happy to be part of it all, i played the BBC/amiga/pc versions.
i have no Expectations at all im just happy to be there,,,

Duffer here too

Hey there people, just like most it seems, i'm a bit of an old **** (excuse me if your a whipper snapper u30 lol) who first came to elite (electron) when it was the only game that you could just play and play and play.
Then I would get a new game finish it in a few days weeks sometimes maybe, and then straight back to Elite to lose more school nights tucked under a blanket (b4 the internet thank you) playing Elite/II Frontier, F Enc etc so the parents wouldnt go nuts.

I wanted to be a duffer, cause thats what the kids call me, and im fed up of the games these days all fancy graphics but no real gameplay (IMHO) that draws you back.

All I want from E D is everything my way obviously!!!!! and to help make it a game that I want to keep coming back too.

Have fun can't wait to chat, and remember save regulary cause when i see you im gonna blow you out of the cosmos lol.

For me going into the DDF was anecdotal purely because I wanted to make what was, for me personally, a reasonable size donation. Given that there are many 100s of DDFMs I don't see it being other than a miniature more focused version of the main forum where I'm still just one voice among many. "God Like" powers - not really seeing it.

First got into Elite with the BBC tape version (asteroids everywhere and no mining lasers) then later got the disc version (mining lasers available and no asteroids anywhere) and I still swear to this day that I saw a Space Dredger! Then saw it on the Beeb with a 6502 (mainframe power  ) co-processor, in colour, followed by the Master 128k version and was stunned. The best version by far, before Frontier, was the Arc. Only time I ever saw groups of ships attacking each other in a battle that was nothing to do with me. That was my first ever experience of a computer game which wasn't entirely focused on the player. Pretty sure that cost me a grade or two in my A-Levels....

Hi All

Also went for the DDF level (final Jonty). First experience of Elite was a a mates BBC Micro in about 1985. Got my own game when it was released on the C64. Also owned Elite II and First Encounters when they came out on PC.

Having read the previous comments it seem you are, in the main a very civilised group and it should be fun in the DDF. There will be heated debates about various aspects of the game but I'm sure DB/FD will not allow anything that detracts from the wonderful heritage of Elite.

I'm really looking forward to getting involved and just hope that I can devote the time that this project deserves.

Hi, guys!

I'm also at the £300 level, and will hopefully find time to be quite active on the DDF forum.

I'm not sure exactly when I first played Elite, but I know it was in the mid-80s on an Amstrad CPC. I also played First Encounters, but actually prefer the original - it had a more interesting feel to it, somehow.

It'll be interesting to see how the DDF dynamic turns out, and whether the DDF group will have an actual effect on the game.

I agree, very well put. I am not yet pledged to the DDF tier but am awaiting upgrade availability to join, hopefully our job will be to moderate such "design statements".

The purpose of the private backer’s discussion forum?

Just curious - I understand why the general forums, I understand the purpose behind the Design forum, but the Private Backers forum that came in at the 75GBP tier, what will that offer over the general forums?

Peter

Think DB said that PBF would get news of what FD were cooking up for ED prior to everyone else (except the DDF naturally).
