I dont know if this has been reported but On my approach to Merope 5C I noticed something odd about its orbit rather than orbitting on a similar plane to its rings it appears to be orbitting "over the top of Merope". May be nothing but it does suggest there is something unusual about 5C

Orbital inclination of 75.80 degrees according to the system map. Which is a bit insane (polar orbits are really difficult to maintain I think).

Anyone know of any other planets/moons that have a such wierd orbit?

Perhaps ties in with Michael brooks plane comment (I'm sure he mentioned about searching above or below as well as outwards at some point).

Weird theory time:

The probe was found in Ross 47. Ross 47 is in the Orion constellation.
Barnacles have what it seems to be a depiction of Barnard's loop. Barnard's loop is in the Orion constellation.

In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were chased by Orion.

The link between Orion and the Pleiades maybe this one: the barnacles are a different race than the artifact/probes. As we are looking for the barnacles, so the civilization behind the probes/barnacles is doing the same. Maybe the Farraguts have been displaced to protect the barnacles from a possible incoming visit?

Hmmm if I understand your suggestion correctly, the issue there would be the Species A is going after Species B because of something in Earth (in effect Species C's) mythology. To my mind that breaks the 4th wall or requires one hell of an odd explanation.

I think I'm getting insane. I was flying on low altitude @ Merope 5C looking for something suspicious, until I found a bright light kilometers away. I was like: OMGFGJKDSHKSAFJKAJDSFA and I boosted up wards to get a better view, until I was about 2KM from the surface it looked like the light was coming from another planet nearby, I kept boosting to get an even better view and I got really disappointed... The light was a star shining through a ring from another planet. I think I should take break for a while.

We have all had these space madness moments, the bright light, that is just star on the horizon. I had it yesterday in the srv, sudden bright flash on the edge of a cliff, I was in a way hopping to find a tea factory of old, but no like you, it was à star!

can't stop laughing.. so there "they" are, trying to hide from us, and here "we" are trying to find them, but they have already found us and we did not.. and we are looking for them just because..

.. at this point I'm afraid the only reason we haven't been smashed yet is because we are stronger. eh, Michael, how about that?

"You don't understand officer! That bright light there. It's been following my car, matching my speed. It's chasing me. And now it's stopped to watch when you pulled me over!"

"Sir, that is Venus."

"OMG! I'm being chased by Venus!"

just happened to me right now!

...LRA redux?

Okay.. Theory time. As I was reading forums and catching up with my coffee this morning. I ran across another post about the Tip Off mission leading them to Izanami and the crashed Anaconda. This is the ONLY tip off I've seen about a crashed conda. And multiple people have gotten it now, correct? And this site just happens to have a UA at it.

Izanami? In Japanese mythology, Izanami-no-Mikoto, also given as 伊弉冉尊 or 伊邪那美命, meaning "she who invites" is a goddess of both creation and death, as well as the former wife of the god Izanagi-no-Mikoto.

A goddess of creation and death. Thanatos is death. Halsey claims to have seen the architects of creation. Coincidence?

I got a tip off that (IIRC) had a couple of crashed 'condas and a crashed T-9. No UAs though.

It was this one: https://m.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/4oc75s/received_one_of_those_tipoff_messages_got_a/

the connections to any earth centric myths do make sense if we're the ones placing things and manipulating them. and since every "alien" discovery related to UA's, barnacles, and UP's have been directly related to either being in or being next to human vessels, this is a strong possibility.

Not really. What you have to ask yourself is where did that mythology originate. Some myths came about as explanations for odd events. Maybe a [Species A] craft crashed to Earth. The inhabitant survives with the help of the locals, learns the language, and tells them of the stories of battles (points to the stars - "You see that star there... that's where we come from..." - "The gods came from the stars, and they returned there..." i.e. was rescued... using a 'xplorer type x and a [Species A] version of an SRV that was known colloquolly as a buggy) - hence the constellations...

Mind <= Blown

I was thinking of all the ideas and links with mythology. First thing I have to say is that the barnacles, probes and UA are of human origin. They have been built by " missing" that stumbled on a previous form of sentient life. Those " missing" where probably in a difficult situation.

They had to science themselves out of their problem and bio- engineered the barnacles for mining and resource collection purpose.

Now because they are designed by humans we see a sign on the barnacles.

They also must have bumped into another alien that might not be so nice. To that threat they built the UA and the probes. And they are trying to tell us that bad things are about to hit us, and they have something for us. ( That is the mystery we are trying to solve).

They are probably still running away and we have found no " missing settlements" ( FD give us subslots to our scanner to scan from space for wrecks, life, at the moment we are Magellan with 31 space ships with no way of mapping what we have seen on the surface).

So back to what we are looking for on merope5c? A big dish and a data package.

Thats true but looking back at the mystery so far the only thing linked to mythology is michael saying the 7 sisters and this was out of game nothing in game has, at any point, had a mythological connection.

Not if we assume Greek mythology influenced by contacts with alien creatures ;)

Mandatory meme

But why would that now have any relevance to events going on today (X thousand years later)?

"Because we are from the place the Humans call Orion, and you are from the place they call the Pleiades, and we told them a load of stuff thousands of years ago when we crashed there, and from that they made these myths... we are now going to declare war on you and... chase you across the sky from their point of view... so we can be... eh... in keeping with their thousands of years old... myths..."

EDIT: or if you are saying 'it's that same war now as it was then', well then we have nothing to worry about as they are apparently not very good at war.
