UAs, Barnacles & other mysteries Thread 7 - The Canonn

Things are getting a little unruly at Obsidian Orbital. hoards of pirates and general unfriendlies roaming about.
Even the station announcer advised "This is not a safe place at the moment, be about your business and leave as soon as you can" !

Too late we have already landed :)

whatever is it... guys, don't worry.

if there is something on merope 5c we will find it.
so many people is coming here... it's worse than Hollywood. (''everybody comes to ..hollywood..'')

Thanks for that.

Watching it gives me a simple idea:

The UA are designed to detect a specific type of star. One with something read rare in it's make up (IE not just a given class). They are distributed in an area of space and they move themselves to a fixed distance, if they locate such a star, after analysing the local area (say a 500ly3 zone). They take up the shell formation to clearly indicate the star they have located.

Knowing that the same elements the creators are looking for will be present on both the Star and therefore the planets they then deploy UPs to that system that quickly identify a planet.

That may or may not have anything to do with the Barnacles. Perhaps they are someone else's attempts to find those same resources.

Problems with this idea:

Why use hundreds of probes when one could point point a star and transmit the location?

Why would you need two types of probe? Unless the requirements for pinpointing possible stars in a large volume of space might exclude a more precise mesurement required to pinpoint a more inert and tiny planet or moon? EG the 12 cells on the 'back' of a UA are propulsion units (frame shift drives?), The UP does not need to move, it just needs to point, so it has two sensor heads.

But then why not build a probe with the required number heads to make the fine measurements and propulsion units?

We will find it, but personally I think it's better to focus on finding a new UP than to search the entire surface of 5c.

If the pointing changes away from the center of 5c when in orbit, we will feel quite silly for not checking first. :)

The bit behind that is also interesting: "Last but not least, we think there might be a slight possibility of a medical emergency at Terentum Mine." A quick search shows that there is no such station or outpost; however, there are TWO stations named Tarentum Mine.

One in Votama, the other in HIP 47050. The latter system is in a state of outbreak.

Red herring or clue? The broken spelling is most likely bad/missing QA by FD once again.

It's HIP 47050: just read the factions names on the left ;)

the faction is in outbreak state and states now affect what missions are issued, its normal

I do not have access to the system map of either system, and no option to buy the navigation data, either. No idea if this was removed in 2.1, if this is only possible if you are docked at a station with a UC office, or a bug.

EDDB only lists HIP 47050 Federal Holdings, and that name makes me go Hmm...

Has anyone managed to get a UA and a UP together as yet?

Yes. We had them together a bit in space, Ecthelion has the video and I believe its on the first page... I think.

Ah Ecthelion posted it again, beat me to it. :D nm

I'm probably gonna spoil some fun but it seems likely that whatever is hidden has been hand placed along some sort of scenery... You know... For the show !
Could'nt we catalogue the main features of Merope 5C and survey these first ?

Here is my idea:

Take High Resolution pictures of the surface and use it to make a flat map of the surface. Then we need to catalogue the biggest features :

- Craters
- Cayons
- Montains

Only the big ones. Sticking to the main features would drastically reduce the time and manpower needed.

In the end, I could very well be wrong though. (Obviously)

Bedtime for me.

But before I go, I think we found something.
We both came across a low static noise like a hissing. That was not associated with any POI or rock. Took ages to finally locate it directly, and it seemed to be coming from beneath the ground. It was in a pit for want of a better word. We shot the hell out of that piece of ground, but nothing happened.
I would suggest that anyone else who comes across it dismisses the ship and turns of all non essential systems on the SRV. Maybe something might make itself known in that case.

Gotta hit the hay. Good luck!

Ill post XY when I wake up.

Couple of thoughts...

Has anyone been back to the location where the UP bugged out planetside?

Also...

Been thinking about the sounds...

Did some reading up on echolocation. One thing that stood out and made me think of the UA/UP setup;

animal echolocation has only one transmitter and two receivers (the ears).

Also in regards to the Morse code;

Another reason for variation in echolocation is habitat.

What you take from these facts is up to the individual. Personally I think the Artifact, the probe and the barnacle are 3 parts of the same entity, and echolocation is the how they communicate. This further strengthens my theory that these things are sentient beings, not just bio genetically engineered tech.

Now if I can just learn how to communicate with echolocation, maybe a barnacle would tell me how to grow them. If I ask really nicely? Click click clock click wreee?

Wait what?? ive heard that sound at a crater on that planet only the other day no joke. the crater is beside a canyon and is about the size of about 3 condas?? I never got the XYs myself as i was only there for a bit before some nasty AI pirates showed up and i blasted away but i have heard that noise also!
