Elite / Frontier Ship Preference

I'm kinda curious as to what everyone's favourite ship/accessory combination is when playing FE/FFE?
I'd be interested to see what setups different people prefer, and if there is a unanimous "best" ship for a given task (e.g. trading, fighting).

Asp yep gets my vote. Also like the Viper when I first got the game all those years ago, although you struggle to fit nice kit on there.

I love to fly the Cobra MK III with a military drive, and a hyperspace cloud analyzer, when I'm a hitman. But my favorite is the Asp Explorer, its a good all-round ship. God I miss FE2, can't get it to run anymore. :( I used to configure Windows XP a lot, and always got it to run in the end, but no luck now.

David B we need you! Give us Elite IV or give us death...

Probably Asp outfitted with Class3 drive, 5 shield gens, 4MW beam laser, fuel scoop and all the typical junk, leaving 18 tons free for fuel and cargo.
I usually leave double capacity required for maximum range jump free for fuel and cargo in any ship - it allows me to either pick up some cargo, or perform double jump without the need for refueling - handy if you're in a hurry, or don't fancy sundiving, since not every system has gas giants.

I'm not a big fan of the heavier ships, even though flying properly equipped Boa, Panther, or even Imperial Explorer (best described as freighter-sized fighter) is a safe way to have a lot of fun - they are simply way too sluggish.

Overall I like heavy fighters the best and heavy freighters the second best. I don't really like smaller frieghters and Imperial Courier, as they lack hull capacity required to offset their sluggishness and I'm not much of a fan of small fighters as they lack hull capacity to put in any, but the most essential equipment and put you in big trouble when someone fires a missile at you.

I prefer standard hydrogen drives over military ones for their versatility.

In FE2 I often use pulse laser (5MW or even 30MW one) instead of beam laser due to the reduced bulk of the former, but I don't really like this in FFE - aiming a pulse laser in the heat of battle is way too absorbing in FFE where your life depends solely on your evasive maneuvers (though I did manage to take an Imperial Explorer armed with a plasma accelerator with an Adder with 5MW pulse laser a couple of times).

I usually carry a hyperspace cloud analyzer, but most of the time it collects dust on my ship - I'm not a pirate and not much of an assassin.

Ever heard of GLFrontier?

When I played this game many many many many many years ago on my Amiga 500, I was already a bit of an Elite-addict, so I plumped for the Lave System start-place. Straight away I was bored of the Cobra MkIII...I'd been flying one for years.

In one of the Elite missions you faced a Constrictor, and that straight away became my favourite ship in the games. When I found out you could buy them in Frontier I just had to get one as soon as I could afford it, and I made sure it was all black too. ("Heeey, feel that surface." "Heeeey, you can't!" "Yeah, it's like totally frictionless!")

With a Hyperspace Cloud Analyser and 4MW Beam Laser it became my Assassin Craft of choice.

The Panther Clipper, fully loaded with everything I could squeeze in, was my "Don't Mess With Me" ship! Have recently started playing the game again, after years of not.

Have tried it, it was cool. But the planets lost it's texture, and I love the way Io looks in FE2. But at least it runs :)

Ctrl+E to switch between rendering modes, including the original one.

OpenGL mode looks like crap, I agree.

WOW! Thanks a lot. Are there anymore surprises I need to know about? Now I can play it again, I just love the feel this game gives me.

You're welcome and not that I know about.

Anyway, I find original low res graphics with all the surface detail and um.. atmospheric haze preferable to having planets that look like big smooth blobs lacking even the terminator (day-night line) and stars that turn dark green when you get close.

I agree with you DraQ, so I'm going to give the CTRL-E thing a try myself. No point having updated graphics if the objects are going to look smoother, but completely unrealistic. The ships look better, but that's all really.

I am still awed by the graphical detail in FE2, by the way. For example working clocktowers, small lettered text reading
"max laden wt 1000t
only disconnect in dry dock" on Lynx Bulk Carrier's cargo pods, or nuclear trefoils on both spherical tanks in containers with radioactives.
This kind of detail isn't even visible until you stick your ship's nose to the object in question, yet, it's still there.

Definitely my Griffin Carrier with a Thargoid laser :)

One question, how did you get your Thargoid laser onto the Griffin?!!

But, to answer the question... At the moment I'm loving the Thargoid ship. I'm slowly working my way up the Fed Mil career ladder (currently at Sgt.Major) so the strength of the lasers and the number of missile pylons def come in handy! That and the drive of course!! :D

To be honest, with a bit of hacking. That's often a bad thing but I am genuine Elite on FFE and have completed all the missions, so I reckon it's time for a bit of fun now ;)

So is there a way I can sell/remove the turret lasers? I don't use them so the extra space can be used more efficiently. I'm currently doing as many assassination jobs for the feds as I can and trading makes a useful aside!

Update:
As of late I've replaced 4MW beam on my Asp with 5MW pulse and fitted 3 extra shield generators and energy booster.
Doing well so far, thanks to having a good aim.

Ooh no, it's Beam Lasers all the way for me. It'd have to be a 20MW Pulse Laser rather than a 4MW Beam Laser in my opinion! ;)
There is 30MW pulse, but it's super slow and overheats quickly.

I agree about the whole 4MW beam VS 5MW pulse, but 3 extra shield-gens and energy booster can make all the difference in the world, while the only ships that can actually make problems when you use pulse are of Eagle class and below.
