Given it is almost certain that you caused Jacques to mis-jump, I've been wondering if your were going to volunteer to try some sort of rescue? From this response I take it you are only interested in being the equivalent of a space chav, causing vandalism and chaos? [arrrr]

Well, I am on my way there.... ;) Whether it's to be a chav or not is entirely up to interpretation ;)

Slightly more seriously though... I don't have any idea what FD's plans for Jaques were originally. I don't know if other players delivered UAs, though I definitely wasn't the only one taking actions to deliberately or inadvertently have some impact on Jaques jump, though that article doesn't mention anything to do with UAs.

If the 200 UAs I shipped were indeed the sole cause of Jaques station's misjump, and he would've happily arrived at Beagle Point if not, bully for me as a space chav, but all roleplaying aside it's "Mission Complete" as far as I'm concerned, as my sole motivating factor to it was "Man, wouldn't it be cool if I could cause issues with Jaques' before it jumps. It might arrive at Beagle Point with technological plague issues, and then there'll be a big community effort to ship MA's 65,000 LY to fix it". People are already rallying to try and repair Jaques Station with Meta Alloys, fuel, and other supplies. That's pretty awesome, and even if people legit feel angst at me for causing that malfunction, I'm pretty happy to see the community getting together like that.

I'm not about being the bad guy, but I'm definitely about being morally ambiguous, 'good guys' need a bad guy to create a some sparks :)

Of course Jmanis knew exactly what he was doing and what he wanted to achieve. I just think doing 'for science' would be a rather poor explanation. That would be like nuking London 'for science'. Which makes him in effect an simple arsonist.

It's definitely "for science" in a fashion... I just have reckless abandon others. Worth noting I submitted a CG (which probably wouldn't work now UA spawn rates are massively reduced) shortly before the first MA gathering CG got submitted. The goal of my CG was to create a "rare good" being a weapon devised from the UA's technological plague effects. It got rejected because it was going to be "too similar to a CG in the works", which turned out to be the MA CG.

Have some rep...

'space chav'?

Now i'll admit, I'm a big fan of Jmanis (check his link in his sig), so I'm bound to defend him, but he was not the only person who shipped UAs to Jacques - although it's likely he did the most. I didn't but I've seen many people talking about having done it, and when they were doing it too.

And as has just been mentioned above ^ it was going to happen anyway. Even if nobody had done it, I expect MB and the boys and girls always had this planned, but if they didn't, then it's made this whole thing far more interesting right!?

The irony being that after being a novelty for a while, then having that novelty wear off, we'd taken Jacques' moving station thing for granted and it was ripe for a big story either way. I'd say a pattern is emerging - big thing moves and then big tings gwiddarn (thanks roots manuva).

Indeed. I'm definitely not a team player by any measure, but there's definitely a "Surely I'm not the only one doing this", and it'd be presumptuous of me to run around and go "z0mg I did it all myself!". But with the fines and large bounties while shipping the UAs, I can at least be "someone" who's doing it, and draw a measure of infamy for it. As soon as I got the bounty on me issued by Jaques, I played strictly open, during the Hydrogen CG. A couple players definitely saw me, but nobody ever scanned me, so the bounty went unnoticed... but I was prepared to lose it for the sake of someone getting some fun out of it :)

EDIT: Kinda wish I could get my forum rating changed from "Dangerous" to "Space Chav" now :D

I flew into the Pliades IH-V system yesterday and when I looked at my system map, there was a big gap where D2 and D3 should have been. I've been to barnacles on both before. Honked the system and 'rediscovered' them.

I'm thinking that when FD update the status of the barnacles it causes some bug that makes the planets look like new territory to us?

Definitely a good way to detect planets that have had barnacles added if true

Interesting that we are looking at Merope 5C do we have any recordings of the strange sounds? I heard wailing last night (I didn't find any barnys) is there wailing everywhere on the planet?

Found this from a while ago although this may be irrelevant it was interesting that it was recorded on 5c though.

All I could think of watching this was the Shadows in Babylon 5.

What if the Thargoids, or whoever are already here, we just can't sense them? They exist partially in Witch Space physically and can phase into and out of normal space at will? The reason we don't see them doing thigns is they simple don't wish us to see them... until they are ready.

Indeed there could be whole hyperspace war going on right under our noses that we are technologically ignorant of. When people go missing, like President whatshername and Jaques, it is a more friendly set of aliens that lends a hand and put them back in normal space. As we have no ability to exist in Hyperspace/Witch Space, we perceive it as all sorts of time muddled nonsense.

In the good Mr. Jones's video there might have been insectoids right behind his chair, completely invisible and incorporeal to him, but who's sounds where seeming into real space...

Actually he plans on taking more there.

Yes yes, I bet he already has a Burberry skin for his Cobra...

/places tinfoil on everything..

So. Unless Jaques temporal displacement was just a strange side effect of whatever went wrong, I am going to throw everyone's theories a bit off.

If whatever/whoever caused it can travel through space AND time, then the arguments against aliens using morse code or knowing anything about human civilization in general, are completely invalid. These beings could easily have met us in the past or future and we wouldn't necessarily know anything about it right now. They could know everything about us and know the exact time that we should meet them. Im definitely ordering some of Halsey's koolaid at this point. But the Architects are real.

We just know them as Frontier Developments.

PlanetMapper

I just submitted a small update to my PlanetMapper tool:

- added detail textures for Merope5c (only a test at the moment, will add more this evening, but its a pain to create them...)
- show Lat/Long position of mousepointer
- clicking and dragging on the surface will show you the distance between clicked and current position
- updated with the latest findings of the Merope5c-Spreadsheet
- bugs fixed of course

Here you go: http://lagerhalle.myds.me/unity/PlanetMapper/PlanetMapper.html

Unfortunatly, all the loading/saving/importing won't work with the webplayer version, so i will upload a standalone desktop version later.

Cheers,

Yes! Elite was released to help these super advanced aliens determine who among is the very best pilot in be galaxy. This pilot (likely and under privileged teen) will then be taken to Frontier's secret asteroid base where they will pilot a cobra mk III in a final battle to defend Frontier against the Ko-Don-Thargoid Armada.

Haha. As humorous as this is.. I meant more along the lines of thinking that Fdev are playing the game AS the Architects.

Is the planet making wailing / groaning noises for everyone? I can hear the barny noise where i am but canr see a barny and wondered if everyone is hearing the same?

I can't search Merope 5c anymore, it's just too tedious, and coupled with the fact that I'm 99% sure that I won't be the one to find whatever we're looking for, it just turns mind numbingly stupid. I already know how it's all going to unfold anyway, I search for a week straight, then find out that someone else found something, and I get to watch a video of it happening, then I'll get to go and look at the object with 100 other cmdrs. Sorry but this just isn't engaging gameplay for me. Since the Barnacles were found I've spent many hours recording video of them, analyzing the noises they make, and the best thing we've discovered about them? they aren't using morse code! whupdy-do! I love the idea of an unfolding story that we all get to share and influence, but in practice it's without a doubt the most boring part of this game. I have literally spent 10+ hours on merope 5c and accomplished absolutely nothing. I could have been collecting materials I need or, gaining rep with some faction, or just making money, but instead I just spent over 10 hours looking for something I am basically certain I will never find. I don't feel at all like I'm actually part of the story in game at all, 100% of everything I know about the UA/Barnicle mystery comes from reading these forums, I could have never played the game once in my life and still contributed to this mystery as much as I have. This storyline almost isn't part of the game at all, it's just something I read about.

Sorry, I'm just venting, I'm not really angry, just frustrated. It just feels like a puzzle that has no logical answer, just something random someone will stumble upon one day.

Then please step away and don't do something that is no longer fun. You're making the right choice. This puzzle will have a very logical, and in my opinion, obvious answer. The problem is that we are overthinking it, just like with the Formidine Rift (Drew has said a few times not too over do it). Anytime you get a large group throwing out multiple ideas, tinfoil theories, etc. things get muddles and WAY more complicated than they need to be. I think we could use someone jumping in from the start with the basic, unaltered/unanalyzed facts and see what may be discovered.

You're right! Like the great barnacle hunt, it feels like we spent 2 weeks+ searching for something that wasn't in game yet. When people got despondant, FD waived a magic wand, there was an update and someone found a barnacle within 12 hrs. Hmmm

Or I might just be Mr Cynical, but this is how it looked to me. So I reckon whatever is supposed to be on Merope 5C isn't actually there yet. Watch for updates ;-)

I know that's why I'm still playing. Speaking of ship kits, I would definitely buy a Gunstar modification to the Imperial Eagle.

I agree with you. I've lurked for almost 6 threads now and in between people finding stuff by mostly sheer dumb luck there isn't anything pointing people where to go. Case and point, Jaques Station.

I'm on 5C myself and can't find jack squat. Been there for about a week.

I have been saying we need something in game other than something cryptic in the newsfeed , we need a mission or an NPC to tell us, "hey, I just passed by this system and my scanners went wonky, I would have checked it out but I have a full load of (insert commodity here) I need to deliver, I'm on a schedule!" Then we would have an in-game mechanic helping steer us around instead of everyone flooding the forums begging for answers.

I'd make a joke about game mechanics we need/deserve (insert Batman meme) but I'm far too tired and hungry. I'll keep plugging away regardless, between a little searching for the next piece of the puzzle and exploration and trading I'll keep it casual.

See you out there Commanders. o7

Yes, something like that, something we can actually do instead of just waiting for the next person to randomly stumble on the next piece of the puzzle.
