DK2+970 vs CV1+1080 Comparison

Obviously, the latter is a lot better, but in what ways?

  1. The scale is proper. For me at least - I have an IPD of around 62mm, and everything feels the right size finally. My body is an adult body, the stars seem at the infinite convergence, the ships feel huge, everything is right. Adds so much.
  2. The clarity fixes the scale of planets imo. The planet rendering has also changed in between my transition so hard to pinpoint it perfectly, but I will say this - with the old DK2, due to the lower resolution and the lower settings I had to use (although even if I tried higher settings it didn't fix this exact problem), the distant geometry would lose all detail so it would lose it's depth. A vast plain tapering off for miles to a distant mountain wouldn't seem so. It would seem like it could be a few hundred meters or a few million miles. Without detail, once things get beyond a certain distance, you have no idea how far they are anymore.

With the CV1, especially with the debug tool and pixel density at 1.5+, I can see the texture and shape of geometry miles away, and can see distance building up as the landscape falls away before me. Really - it fixed an ultimate problem I had, and now the planets really are planet size.~

I get so much pleasure now, driving around, then getting into my ship and flying over the same terrain I was driving on, and feeling how huge it is. Never got that before.
  3. The "godrays" of the fresnal lenses aren't as big a problem as I thought. They were the first thing I noticed, but then they kinda didn't really show up anymore as the game is generally quite dark, and I turned my HUD down to compensate. The brain filters them out eventually, don't notice them anymore.
  4. The stars are still fairly big and blotchy, but with the debugtool pixel density fix at 1.5, they get smaller and "brighter" and it's a exactly like the old SS (the new SS is not the same - much more of a bit of anti-aliasing). I can see the detail of nebulae, dark regions, clouds etc. It's beautiful.
  5. The black smearing and colour banding problems I had on the DK2 with the 1.3 drivers are completely gone. I have to admit, when I first loaded up the game I got very bad colour banding, my heart sank. Then it just...stopped. Almost as if the screens needed to be warmed up and broken in. You can see colour banding when you are near the sun and everything is really dark, but it somehow feels right. No smearing at all.
  6. The added clarity makes everything perfectly readable, and the ability to use different colour schemes thanks to the new pixels is a breath of fresh air. IMO the new perfect one is the NO2O Turquoise... one in my EDProfiler tool :)
  7. The added clarity also makes the stations a lot more pleasing to look at. There is far less shimmer, they feel more natural now, not a jaggedy mess. Still some jaggies, not perfect, but much better.
  8. To me, there is no more screen door. I can, if I try, see the gaps between the pixels slightly, but I don't notice it. Then again, I barely noticed it with the DK2 so don't assume it is fine if you are particularly sensitive to it.
  9. The CV1 is lighter, and fits on your head better. The built in headphones make things very convenient. No need to have cables everywhere, just one cable for all. Some say it is more fatiguing than the DK2 and I almost agreed for a while. Then I loosened it further, and also grew more tolerant to it and now I can use it all day without a break. I do feel a little more sore and tired at the end of that session, but it is definately something you can get better at.
  10. The in built headphones are excellent quality, and combined with a bodyshaker, it's the best experience I can imagine, BAR NONE. Elite, inside a ship, it is so satisfying, the sound, the immersion, the speed, the handling, the gorgeousness of it all, the hugeness. I am in heaven.

Was totally worth basically putting myself in poverty and debt to get all this equipment. I also upgraded my i5 2500K to a 3570K and that has helped too :) FYI also have an SSD install, 8GB RAM and in general a pretty rubbish PC. I'm overclocking the core of the 1080 by 135Hz and the CPU is running at 4.1GHz

EDIT:

I had a good exploration session last night and I've got a few more things to add to my list:

  1. I ran into my first class O supergiant since getting the CV1. The level of detail of the plasma surface literally blew me away, I was so amazed. It really hit me. I was watching DS9 with my wife on the screen while in transit, and I just started giggling and wowing and couldn't help myself.
  2. After playing for quite a few hours the CV1 became a part of me. In the end it wasn't a screen anymore, I was really there. The struts holding my front wheels were THERE. I couldn't see the pixels, I couldn't see any indication that it wasn't real. I was just in so much amazement.

EDIT2:

Couple more things:

  1. The field of view is smaller than the DK2, noticeably. It makes it feel more like you are wearing blinkers, or a mask, but it's not that bad.
  2. The peripheral vision is much better than the DK2. No loss in quality at all. Get your eyes in the right position relative to the lenses and you can look to the corners and see the details there 100% as clear as directly ahead.

Thank you for this info
Dubbing on replacing my gtx 970 for a 1080 when they become available again
Is It worth the upgrading ?

Dr Kai,

For fun, try setting the SS in game to 0.65 and the debugtool to 2.0 and see how you do with that. For me that gives an amazing experience in my rift with a 980Ti. I posted a thread about it and people said they were going to try it, but no one has responded with their results. I would love to see how it works for you.

I can answer you. It did work for me very well, but at loss of overall detail. Hence my question. Thank you :)

drkaii;4191864]I can use the pixel density at 2.0 without reducing the in game SS with the 1080 :)[/QUOTE]

Meaning everything becomes sharper and or better filling in the gaps between the pixels ?

Everything becomes sharper. Much sharper. Not much difference between 1.5 and 2.0

Thanks for the info! Have you tried the in-game super-sampling vs the debug tool? From a purely technical POV, they should be equivalent. But, maybe since the debug tool is at the driver level, it can do it more efficiently perhaps?

Edit: Doh - somehow I missed the other replies regarding in-game vs debug tool. Very interesting idea lowering in-game, and increasing via debug tool.

Debug tool is much better. MUCH. As I stated, the in game SS seems to not actually be super sampling at all, but more like MSAA. Very good MSAA, but it doesn't increase clarity, just removes jaggies. The debug tool physically removes blur

Nice! I tried it with my 970 (haven't upgraded *yet*) and can run at 1.2 in the debug tool. Not a gigantic improvement, but definitely better.

I currently use a 970 as well, but as my brain seems to not be affected by lower FPS, i use 2.0 pixels per display and VR high, with shadows set to ultra. Head movement is still super smooth and i get no judder at all - and no motion sickness. I unparked my CPU cores though. The only judder i get, is when the SRV deploys, but i can live with that for sure. So far i can drive the SRV, fly through asteroid rings (edit: that includes fast paced combat with multiple ships in vicinity) and dock at stations with no problem, concerning motion sickness, even if i spend two or three hours in the Rift.

For me PpD set to 2.0 makes all the difference. The visual quality goes from swampy to almost crisp. In a month or two i will get a 1080. I am sure that ambient occlusion and higher texture settings will increase the visual quality a lot more.

The debug tool really saved the day for me, as i was pretty disappointed with the out of the box quality of the rift.

The only game where it does not work for me is Subnautica... 15 minutes in the game and my stomach does loopings... I havent tried with PpD set to lower settings though.

Hey Dr. Kaii, all

Looks like my CV1 is coming this Thursday so I'm looking forward to comparing it to my DK2 also.

Regarding motion sickness - I hope it does improve it - I dont suffer it at all whilst flying but I tried a couple of times in my SRV and it wasn't nice - I got the feeling it was more because of the close vicinity of environment objects and the rapid turning movement the SRV can exhibit - swinging from side to side in-extremis.

Come to think of it I may look to use a controller for SRV instead of my HOTAS setup and see if that makes a difference

I find that the motion sickness is actually a bit worse on the CV1 so good luck. Change the settings so the SRV doesn't roll - can't remember the name of the setting. Other than that, just keep at it, you'll improve. If you start feeling sick, stop immediately. It's annoying but take that seriously and you should get less sick over time. Right now I can play indefinitely without getting nauseous, although I do experience a bit of nausea from time to time that only lasts as long as the manoeuvre I that is making me sick. It doesn't linger for hours like it did when I first started.

Don't think a controller will help much, other than make it easier to control.

@drkai
That's a nice second review.
But... ,maybe using a GTX970, playing makes me a bit motion sick (and this for a guy sailing across the north sea ).
It's feeling a bit weird steering a spaceship wearing a diving mask [noob].

Because of your experience with the gtx 1080 I did order one and hopefully movement in VR will become better.
