Newcomer / Intro New CMDR in need of advice

hey fellow CMDRs

got the game 3 days ago on the steam summer sale and hope you guys could help me out a little bit
i think i havent done too bad yet got my hands on 40kk (thanks to the CG) currently flying a Viper MK IV
but what to go for next
what ship should i aim for i like the bounty hunting but all i read about making alot more credits to buy those bigger ships and better euqip is to trade but how and where ?
Also can u do the bounty hunting the same way like the CG in every system ? With the police force helping you out as i wasnt able to even take out the shields of one of the bigger ships in the high res zone on my own

thanks for your help [noob]

hi,
The reason you hear so much about getting credits to get the big ships is because lot of players think bigger + expensive = better. They are not necessarily correct. I've lost count of the people that have grinded the latest moneymaking activity and took a virtually stock Anaconda into combat and died. Anyone that's done combat in any stock ship knows without decent upgrades they may as well be paperweights.

Take a look at https://coriolis.io/
and http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Ships

There's a table with ship roles (combat/freighter etc).
Personally from the Viper level i'd aim for a Vulture.

Yes, it's the best way to do bounty hunting until you upgrade a ship that can hold it's own. A top of the line viper 4 should be able to win a few 1v1 encounters but it's almost always safer with a few police around. :)

Alex is completely right. If you start chasing money too hard or will fixate on one "goal" ship, you're going to tunnel-vision and miss a great deal of the game.

It's nice to have some notion of direction, but try to enjoy the ride. Don't dream about a far-away ship. Try all of the others in between. Every ship has a potential of captivating your heart.
Btw. By "40kk" you mean 40 million? :p
With that kind of money you can do almost anything.
The Vulture Alex recommended is an obvious choice, But have you tried Asp and Diamondback Scouts? They're a polar opposite of Mk.IV - very nimble and much fun to fly. Or you could try and start getting ranks with the imperial navy. In a few days of doing missions, you can sit in a Courier - a Porsche of the light fighter ships. That way you'd also eventually work your way to the Clipper, which is (imho) the ultimate bounty-hunting ship under 100M.

Or you can go nuts, like I did and start bounty-hunting in a Keelback. She can be turned into an awesome tank. :D

...the people that have grinded...
btw. This is all over the forums. Who came up with this? "Grinded" isn't a word. :D (how ever Thesaurus is trying to say otherwise)
I would be really interested to learn about the origin of this thing. Is it the internet slang? Like "Pwned" and the 13375P33K thingy? :p

Not entirely sure, it's a bit like the word griefed. Everyone seems to have a slightly different meaning and whenever it comes up they all argue about it :p

Probably first cropped up when the first game with experience points came into play to level-up and access areas/items...

Personally my definition of grind is an activity you do not want to do but still repetitively do it solely to get to an activity you want to do.
In this case they want big ships therefore grind smuggling missions (current biggest earner) until they get there. With this philosophy yes you can do smuggling excessively in order to get bigger ships and it's not grinding if you enjoy the missions and want to smuggle.

Personally the Cobra MkIII was my primary transition ship. Once I had my hands on one of those little puppies I was able to get it reasonably upgraded and it was easy enough to fit out with enough cargo hold to make some rare trade runs to earn some creds, and had enough teeth to get me out of trouble in combat.

I will declare i was primarily always going to head down the trading/exploring route though, so i worked towards the AspX instead of the Vulture. If you're looking for the Bounty hunting and combat route the Cobra MkIII to Vulture is a pretty doable process, not to mention the Cobra MkIII is a very fun ship to pilot.

Happy hunting CMDR stay shiny...

do, what you want to do. CR will come. if you want to do bounty hunting, do that.

when i started a second account (for bounty hunting and similar things), while i'm out exploring, i went sidey -> eagle -> viper -> diamondback scout -> vulture -> courier. the courier is/was my favourite combat ship, together with the diamondback scout, but it needs imperial navy rank.

if you like bounty hunting, why not watching out for a good system with high res and haz res, and collect a fleet of smaller combat ships there? all of them are special. flying them all will teach you a lot about their differences and make you a better pilot.

Eagle is your next step if you want to go bounty hunting. Capable little ship but heats up quite quickly and won't take too much damage. Best tactic is to pick on ships that are already being fired on by the police and pick up some bounties so you can upgrade your ship. Good luck!

My list of ships I've owned * indicates those I still have.

Sidewinder
Viper mkIII
Cobra mkIII
Asp Explorer *
Eagle
Imperial Eagle *
Vulture
Lakon Type 7

I would suggest the Imperial Eagle over the regular one, I know it isn't as manoeuvreable but it is faster and has more power available. It and the Asp X are my two top favourites to date with the Cobra very close behind them.

You need a bigger fleet :)

hey guys

@chris yeah 40kk = 40 million just too lazy to type

so i think vulture or the clipper it will be then i guess but where should i head to get that rep with the empire i think i still have the bounty credits for empire and couldnt even find a station yet
i really know nothing about the game yet
also i m not that good in combat i think so a small hit and run ship is not the best choice for me i guess

and the coriolis site all it does if i select a combat role is put on the A equipment into the standart ship equipment but the other stuff (the more important one as theres more choice) is still empty

Yeah coriolis isn't there to say "fly this ship" its there so you can build your own and see the power/weight/speed/combat potential of different builds. For example if you put an Combat rated Clipper vs an combat rated Vulture you'll see that the clipper has nearly twice as much armour and significantly higher speed but it has weaker shields and turns much slower.
It travels further and has space for more internals.
How you fit your internals is up to you, generally combat ships fit shield cell banks, hull packages, a fuel scoop if travelling, cargo racks if pirating/missions, potentially an interdictor etc. If you want build advice thats something different and I've not done combat since the changes to 2.1 so can't provide advice atm :)

Following the above the Clipper is more of a speed freak tank than the Vulture which is designed to get into and win turning battles. Both are not really designed to face-tank damage from other ships but both are significantly more survivable than the Viper region of ships. I'd go Vulture first. It's compact, agile and downright scary if you fly it right :)
It just doesn't allow for long distance travel as it's a heavy-short-range fighter really. Engineer mods may fix that.

Empire are generally vertically south of other systems, Go to the 3rd tab of the galmap and change "show by colour" to faction or allegiance or whatever it is. You'll be able to zoom and see it easier.

IMHO...YMMV

If you want to be a bounty hunter, aim for a Vulture. More pew-pew for your pennies and all that, but outfit it properly before taking it into combat, and be aware that its powerplant is considered by many to be undersized for the big hardpoints, so try out your build on coriolis.io and play with the power management before committing to a loadout.
How you get there is up to you, but you could do much worse than a pimped-out Cobra Mk III for trading/smuggling.

Happy Pew-Pews! :)

I made my first million in a Viper IV, and I'm very likely to keep it far into the future,
I also still have my default Sidewinder and the Adder I bought for mining.
I wouldn't mind having an Orca purely for how nice it looks, but presently I don't really have any ship-goals in mind. I'm more focused on honing my piloting skills and finding interesting places to trade in cargo for credits.

thanks again
with the new CG i will try to trade a little while to contribute and test the vulture in 2 days i think

what kind of weapons would u suggest will get the gimbaled one as my flying is not that good to hit with fixed ones but whats the big differnce between the pulse/burst/beam ones ?

Welcome to the ED Galaxy. The most important goal in this game is simple. HAVE FUN! There are numerous ways of making credits, and opening up various options (OK, a large, well fitted Anaconda will bring in the credits quickly, allowing you to make wide plans for the future), but remember you are PLAYING a game. Yes, it is huge, with a massive variety of things to do, but please enjoy yourself. If you decide to set yourself goals make sure they are waypoints to further goals, not endpoints. I have hit a few waypoints already, but I make sure I have other things to aim for.

Power consumption is probably the single greatest difference. Beam uses a lot more power than Burst or Pulse. Beam also does more damage, as long as you can sustain it on a target - for the most part.
I prefer Gimbled weapons mostly as my aim is still not where I want it to be, though I can hit the broad side of a barn at 2000m. I haven't really used Turret weapons, as they tend to be more suited to larger ships.
I also recommend a mix of weapons, say Burst Laser and Multi-cannons. Lasers are better at stripping away shields and cannons are better at eating up hulls. If you're after larger, slower ships, Torpedoes are tough to beat.

thanks again

Beam laser + multicannon seems to work really well.
Alternatively dual multicannons if you engineer one to apply some thermal damage.
Or 1 beam + 1 cannon.
Pretty much mix and match a laser with a kinetic weapon. I'd avoid plasma's for the heat build-up but some people love them :)

Modules are 100% refundable even after use you get exactly what you paid when selling, my advice is try things out, findout what weapons you find fun, what you find effective and what you hate.
I love frag cannons for example but lots of people hate them for their high friendly fire chance :p

Note, currently there is a bug with infinite multicannon ammo, you may wish to take advantage of that assuming the bug is there for you ;)
