I see that some of the stuff I have to provide to engineers to do their stuff has to be mined. No probs, I can set up one of my ships to do some mining. But how do I get the canister onto the ship which I want to upgrade, which I may not want to (or be able to) go mining in? If I am JOhnny-no-mates, I can't do the thing where I abandon the canister for a mate to scoop up, and then go and get my other ship. Anyone found a way to do this solo?

When you swap to your ship, which you want to upgrade, all cargo will be transferred to that. That ship must of course have enough cargo space

Yeah, it's a bit of a problem. If you need to carry mined commodities, you'll be a huge target for pirates. So if you want to upgrade your exploration / trade vessel, it's a bit... difficult.
The only thing I can think of is if you could try dumping it just outside a station (being careful not to get done for littering), then enter the station and switch ships, and collect it on the way out. I can't say for certain if you switch instances when you swap ships, so I'd definitely test it first with a tonne of low-value goods first.

From what I've read the upgraded components can be removed from one ship in the outfitting screen and are available for buy back so, assuming you don't drop connection, I think you can switch them between ships that way - so as long as you can put the right size of module in the ship you go mining in you can get it upgraded on the mining ship and then swap it to the target ship.
I am not in the bubble and I have not been since before 2.1 dropped (before 1.4 dropped for that matter...) so I may well have gotten the wrong end of a stick there...
