Big whoops

Hi All

I'm kind of new to exploring, I just wanted to discover my very own black hole or even a neutron star so have been semi aimlessly jumping around currently just 2K LY from the bubble heading out further finding plenty of unexplored systems but then when I get to my destination, someone has always been there first.

So last night I go to a the system in the middle of the Eight Burst Nebula which of course has already been discovered, and find a pair of small landable planets with rings around them. I dont have a vehicle hanger, but I bet if I landed on the surface, it would make an amazing screen shot with the blue haze in space and the blue sun in the sky with my planets rings showing and the slightly closer planet lit up by the sun.

I havent landed without an autopilot for a long time, I only just recently dumped it for the detailed surface scanner on my asp so I supercruised up to the planet's pole and glided down and towards a large crater, keeping only hald an eye on my height.

As the glide completed, I dropped the landing gear and quickly realised I was too high to begin landing properly so I retracted and boosted towards the surface, still a few KM up.

But the ground came up quicker than I was expecting, and the normal trick of deploying landing gear to slow down had little effect.

I pulled up but could not prevent the collision, I slammed into the planet, not sure how fast I was going, which instantly took out my puny undersized shields. I was expecting a bang and insurance screen but I got away with it. it took out 49% of my hull and did not affect any of my systems more than a couple of % so I think I got away lightly.

After hovering a few moments in disbelief and awe at my own stupidity, I let my shields recharge before landing and got the pics that nearly cost me a weeks gaming (I assume you lose all map data and discovered systems when you snuff it before selling?). I'll post the pics up when I get home because it was a really awesome place and not really that far away from the bubble.

Welcome to the exploring club. o7

Glad you escaped as you would, indeed, have lost all exploration data on destruction of the ship... You just got an early memorable lesson of the first rule of exploration in this game: never tempt fate. It's a marathon, not a race. Don't do anything silly, you've got all the time in the world.

Looking forward to the pictures. :)

Well recovered, Cmdr and congratulations on your measured response to the situation.

I look forward to seeing the pictures of the planet...and of the 51% of your ship's hull that is still intact.

Flying happy

I think I'm going to stop using F12 in Steam to capture the screenies as they look somehow reduced in quality.

Thanks for the words of advice. I am beginning to notice that all of the extreme type of systems seem to have been explored already this close in. How far out do you have to go to find an undiscovered non pattern star?

Steam takes screenshots in poopy .jpg, so indeed, your screenies will look reduced in quality.
