Free-to-Play gets people in the door

Free to play training would be good enough, i wouldn't advise letting them into the game unless FD plans to go month to month.

I love it when people suggest that a game should be 'free to play' without explaining how it is going to be paid for...

Well in theory. Putting the Base Game as F2P might be worth consideration before we move to whatever comes after Horizons.
It might boost Sales for the Extensions and actually come out to be more profitable. It would also increase Playercounts which would add more Action to the Game.

Question would be what they give to the People who Bought the Base Game to make sure they dont feel like they were tricked.
A free DLC for example or an package of ingame goodies.

Its not that crazy to do something like that in the future.

You mean something like this...

Notice: Elite Dangerous: Arena is free on PC for a limited time only – download now and play anytime! Offer ends 11th July 2016.

Thats just desperation cuz nobody plays arena xD

I think Frontier would be open to free to play if sales and numbers really dropped however the issue is the game would need to be a lot more polished AND it would need to make a lot of cash through micro transactions which would add a pay to win mentality. Skins alone and ship kits wouldn't be enough I'd forsee actual ships costing real money as well as in game credits. Thankfully we're a long long way from this! I'd imagine David Braben would be quite against f2p as he has a certain vision for Elite and a f2p fan base would turn this into a PvP and troll fest. Of course some hardcore player base would remain but you'll get the 12 year old's just downloading for fun/

I would prefer kick starter type pledges if they really needed the money. I would consider paying to name a station, outpost, or planet.

Evolve? Oh that Giants:Citizen Kabuto ripoff. 100x the polygons, 0x the fun.

To be fair ripping off a really incredibly original game once still results in something pretty original. Compare to the number of Zombie games we now have after DayZ, or heck, just the number of generic FPS or Minecraft voxelly things. :)
