Why I think Elite Dangerous is going to dominate the Space MMO/Space Sim genre

I did watch a YouTube video from "The Know" where they read out a statement from the developers of SC whom changed their small print in a way that funders were no longer allowed to claim their money back if features that were promised were not going to be in game.

They also went on to say that it would be released as a "minimum viable product". Meaning that they would be releasing an incomplete game and building upon it. Now that does sound very familiar...

The Question will be how Fast the Competition Racks up and what the Competition brings out to Start off.

Currently ED has 2 Advantages in its Favor.

1.
Its the First Space MMO of its Type on this Scale that went Online.
So it Created an Playerbase which will Stay even if others Games get a Point against ED simply because they have Archieved something here.

2.
ED has an Massive Scale right away. Which is giving People a Huge Expectation.
That however is Double Edged. It might be EDs Downfall if they dont Step up the Efforts to actually give the Player something to do in that Vastness.

No need to Have Aliens all over the Place. But there seriously needs to be more Variety and Anomalies in the Universe for Players to get an Interesting Experience out of it.
Otherwise the Vast Universe will be a Waste.

But being Honest.
Star Citizen will Dominate.

Ultimately Star Citizen does a good Job to Entertain People even before being Out.
And the Promises of Star Citizen are Colossal.
Even if they Hold not even Half of them. The Game will be Insanely Big and Complex.

Star Citizen currently is offering an Vastly more Incredible Potential. And unless they really mess up Epicly. Star Citizen will beat ED down within short time.

The Question is just how far ED will have taken things before SC goes into Beta.
Otherwise SC will throw em out of the Ring in no Time.

Sadly it does.

However, to be fair ED has been released and despite its faults it's a playable game that is not bad!

Looking at some recent SC game footage I am hopeful for them but have serious reservations.

NMS (which is the 3rd contender) is already on pre-order :)

The thing is though, most players don't play just one game. When I get bored of playing ED I'll go play fallout, doom, Euro truck Simulator (or ATS), GTA, any of the X games plus various MMO's but I'll come back here. I'll be the same when SC drops and even no Man's Sky (a game I'm not planning on getting yet).

The ED team has accomplished a lot on with the budget that they have and will hopefully be around for a long time yet. I just know that my two favourite game developers are going to be going head to head, and I'll be playing both games regardless.

As long as my system can handle it (gets credit card out and dreams on Amazon).

Infinity Battlescape, another I bought into very early. When I get to play this, I didn't get the higher pledge that some are playing, I'm hoping I'll enjoy it. MP in this could flatten all that went before, other than Eve perhaps. We'll see. I'm excited for it, but not as much as NMS to be honest. But luckily it won't be out for a while, so that may change.

To be honest, Infinity Battlescape has potential to wipe the floor with ED. Unfortunately, there's only so much that you can achieve with mere dozen of devs and $300k budget. I really hope that the Battlescape is going to sell well and to provide them funds to re-start their Quest for the Earth project.

I'm sorry but this is all hype right now, nothing more. It may happen, but not looking too good right now. A:C has been out for what, 3 years now? One thing we can judge is the flight model, the cockpit experience... And E:D is much better in both.

Mate SC is not out at all. Its an early Alpha Testbuild.
One which is of course very clunky. But for a fact its one which has alot more features than ED :)

No multiplayer is a plus for many. It is the multiplayer only aspect of Dark Souls that has kept me away from it. I think NMS is going to provide Elite: Dangerous with serious competition. I think the exploration-based aspect of NMS is very attractive to a lot of spacers, flying around and not knowing what you might see next. In Elite you pretty much know where and what you're going to see.

What should really be remembered is that competition isn't necessarily the death of any game. The market isn't flooded with these games and Elites main and most similar contender - Star Citizen - looks like it is stuck in development hell. Feature sprawl might have actually killed it off entirely. Frontier can easily manage if a fair chunk of the player base find NMS a good game and go to it, and it might actually provide a catalyst for greater single player content in Elite which would improve the game.

OffTopic sidenote

Ehm Mate.
Dark Souls is no Multiplayer.

It has one in a somewhat winded sense as you cannot play Coop unless you also allow PvP.
But you can also avoid Multiplayer entirely by just not using Humanity for yourself.

If you want to use humanity and npc helpers without Multiplayer you can just block Dark Souls with your Firewall so other players cant get in despite you being defacto online playing :p

I'm really looking forward to 'Battlescape' myself - someday I hope that 'Quest for Earth' becomes a thing.

What's happened to Limit Theory too - I know Josh had problems, but is it getting back on track?

Yeah, Infinity Battlescape alone can not be true competitor to ED due to its limited scope, but if all goes well this game could mark a new beginning for the original project. One thing is for sure: Flavien and Co. definitely do not need tens of millions to restart the Quest for the Earth. Personally, Infinity and to somewhat lesser degree Rogue System are only two other space sims I am really interested in.

As for the Limit Theory, I admit that I stopped following it when Josh got sick. I've heard that he recovered and started to work again; this time with little bit more consideration for his health, though :)

On paper.

Well.
Walk around Stations and Ships - check
FPS Personal Combat - check
Avatars - check
Multi Crew - check
Transport of other Players - check

SC is using an unfinished Engine. Which causes Physics and alot of stuff to be very wonky.
But in terms of Diversity of Weapons and alot of other details its actually on par or Superior to ED.

The Day when the 3 guys usually in Teamspeak with me. Can walk around my Ship while I am Flying around the Galaxy.
I.ll take it back.
But not a Single day earlier *gg*

In a few years time we’ll all be able to pick over the bones of this sudden (and welcome) influx of space games over the past few years.
.
It will be interesting to see which games will survive that process. Some of the newer, although quite long in the tooth games, such as Battlescape, will have a hard time, perhaps it depends when its released to the public wider. There will be so much choice out there, that it may struggle to get income to really flesh out what its potential is. I hope it doesn’t suffer that and we get to see that potential, just have to hope, wait and see.
Time is ticking for some games, I feel.

Just saw this post.. I could check more or less all of those off, for Space Engineers too. Apart from the Avatar one, I think. But the rest are workable in MP now IIRC in SE. :D
