Rift now shipping in 2 business days - upgrade from DK2 worthwhile?

So, I'm hovering over the 'order' button on the Oculus web site in the expectation that I could have a CV1 with me by the weekend, with a little luck. I'm finally getting some more time to play and have fallen in love with the VR experience again.

The question is, is it really worth the upgrade? Is there that big a big step up from the DK2?

My PC is more than able to handle running it at a good frame rate and SS / pixel pimping via the debug tool (1080GTX) so I don't have any performance concerns.

I'm interested in feedback from those that made the switch from the DK2 and whether the £530 is worth it.

What about the so-called god rays?

Thanks in advance

Mark

I just got mine day before yesterday. Overall, all things considered, I would say it's better, most definitely. Some things are much better but you do have to prepare yourself that some things are worse than the DK2.

The better things - the picture looks much sharper right across the FOV compared to the DK2. It's really great, I'm just flying around planets marvelling at how much better it looks. There's also zero black smearing, which was really bad on the DK2.

The worse things - well, if you look at a sun, or any other bright object (eg the in-game menus), the god rays are very prominent. At their worst it's a bit like looking through a smeary pair of glasses. I think I'll get used to them, in time. It's a shame they're there, but I think if that's the price to pay for having a consistently sharper image across the whole FOV compared to the DK2, then so be it.

Other more minor worse things - the FOV limits are more noticable than the DK2, and it feels (a bit) more like looking through a pair of binoculars. ALso, I get slight 'movement settling' when I turn my head to look at the left and right menus. i.e. I turn my head and stop dead still, but the in-game view moves a bit as if the tracking is settling for a second or two. No idea what's causing that (it doesn't really bother me though). Lastly, although the CV1 is lighter with a much more premium build and feel, I actually found the DK2 more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The CV1's foam is a bit too firm.

Is it worth the £530 though? I can't really answer that question... my wife bought it for me. :eek:D

It's been so long I'm now hanging on to see how much the touch controlers are; I would go for the Vive but for all the reported issues with E:D.

I think the rays vary amongst people and to a quite significant degree.

To me. The easiest way I can describe it is that it is a fair bit less annoying than a J.J. Abrams movie.
(Star trek reboot)

I actually notice more of the fresnel lines and flares with the vive than the rift.

Definately.. had dk2 and got cv1 now. dont follow the thread where it tells you how to get best results. Run ED and select ULTRA from gfx then exit. Run debug tool and put it at 1.5 ss. The outcome and youve the same card as mine is almost identicle to a monitor smoooooth.

hm just now elite crashed with a window on the Screen saying your Computer i slow on Memory safe your files and Close These programs: Elite Dangerous Executable!

My DK2 fell apart a week before my CV1 arrived, so a definite improvement in my case.

The biggest improvement you'll notice is that the text is legible, and the radar display is much clearer.

For me as well there are a lot less wires. I like the sound from the inbuilt speakers and the hidden mike picks up Voice Attack commands without any problem. I used a wired 360 gamepad beforehand so the XBOne wireless gamepad is something I've welcomed.

The only beef I have is with the headtracker sensor. I don't have a good place to stick it. I preferred the DK2's sensor which perched on the top of your monitor.

That's is my biggest critic Point of CV1 because all the rest is good and so this Little minor Point is more noticable than everything else.

I don't understand what other talks about the god rays...the only Thing I can see is the fressnel lense effect on bright Things which is a little bit disturbing sometimes but not dramatic.

The text is more readable the Image looks sharper and more detailed and this 2 Points makes it worth it to me.
Also the Screen door effect is a lot less although the last is moot to me since I modified my DK2 with a foile to blure the dots a bit which eleminated that effect.

A bit a shock point was that I have to wear your glasses inside that CV1 in case you wear glasses. I firts couldn't get confortable with that and thought about buying 2 lense to Mount inside but then I got used to wear my glasses in CV1 extremly fast. After about 2 days it was no issue to me anymore and I never bought those lense.

All in all if you plan to Play ED often and have the spare Money I think it is a good idea to upgrade.
But it depends really if you are going to use it often or not.

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

Simon, I'm interested in your comments re the FoV and, in particular the head tracking settling problem that you're having. I haven't frequented these forums for quite a while but it's the first I've heard either of those two points mentioned. The tracking glitch can't help with the 'immersion' nor with any feelings of motion sickness - anyone else have any feedback here? Certainly whilst I expect that you can get used to the FoV change, the tracking problem would really grate with me, I think.

Thespen, I had considered the same point but I only play Elite and racing sims so the hand controllers would be a curiosity for a while before ending up in the box of other 'cool stuff' that never gets used (and my wife berates me for frequently). Also, I expect that when they are released there will be a glut of orders which push back delivery again so I could be waiting even longer...

TorTorden, nice analogy; have some rep :)

Everyone else: thanks for the comments, especially for the steer regarding the head-tracking camera mount (or lack of). Will probably buy a gorilla pod or similar to address this.

ETA: is it still necessary to mess around with the GUI colours with the CV1? I've done this on the DK2 to compensate for the red pixel size / density problem. Is this no longer an issue?

Cheers,

Mark

I don't have that Problem at all and I have my tracker plugged in into an USB2 because it complained about an for Oculus incompatible USB3 on my ASus Motherboard.
In fact when it is tracking it seems more stable to me than DK2 however it tends to lose the track because of the limited tracking sensor camera Fov depending on where you placed that sensor.

However I recogniced that sometimes when I start ED the tracking is bad... it wiggles if I move my head fast to left and right. Then I shut everything down (ED, oculus home) or restart the PC and it is perefect again.
Not sure where it is comming from can even be my room light in the Background causing this.
That wiggling mode is although you can fly with it very noticable once you have seen the stable mode. But maybe you never had that stable mode? Dunno.
I run it on AMD Cards might be a difference.

I never changed the HUD colours when I was using my DK2. I just used the old trick of leaning back as far as I could before recentering my origin point so that I naturally sit a little forwards to make the displays larger. I'm still doing that with the CV1.

Also I do bump up the HUD brightness to get those green pixels firing.

I'm like an impatient kid. I just hit the 'buy it' button.

I figured that if I buy the CV1 now, I can sell my DK2 whilst there is still a little value in it which would otherwise diminish. Also, selling my 2 x MSI gaming GTX 970s (surplus after recent 1080 upgrade) + the DK2 more than covers this - just need to get around to doing it!

Thanks all.

Should do you great.

I ordered mine last Monday and UPS was at my door this Friday.

I haven't bothered fiddling with gui colours , no matter what you choose it messes other parts up and you get something that look like a bad 80's HUD or a 90's rave with bad ex.

Granted I haven't owned a dk2 but it used cheap panels. For one it had a GRGB colour resolution.
Meaning it could not display full resolution in red and blue, only green,
this would be extremely noticeable with the ED orange HUD since it had no real amount of green in it.

The cv1 doesn't have this issue so unless you personally don't like the colour there is no need to change it.
In fact you should be able to change it to any colour you like.

Had the exact same issue using VR High in game... ram usage would go upto around 10gb and id get the low memory warning after a few hours. Since changing settings to ULTRA in game and debug tool to 1.5 the ram usage flattens out at around 13gb with no warnings + alot more detail, no god rays and very smooth - planets, stations and res sites.. But, i have 32gb ram installed so it may not be for everyone.

That you said "cards" plural, suggests you are trying to run ED VR in crossfire mode. If so, this is known to cause judder, Try disabling one when playing ED. Also Oculus doesn't support multiple gpus.

That's what I did before my pre-order arrived- my DK2 got to £380 on eBay! But, considering that a). You cannot change the IPD now the consumer runtime is out, and b). The DK2 shows washed out colours in ED because of the brightness changes between DK2 and CV1 and especially c). The DK2 Oculus have hinted won't be support in future mandatory runtime updates, means I'd get it sold sharpish if I were you!

Yeah, they should probably have bundled a clip mount as well, but the sensor uses a standard camera mount fitting size so you can use any one of a million of them - https://support.oculus.com/help/oculus/1712159742364822/.

Hey Jabokai, thanks for that info- I had no idea the bundled mount could be removed. I so much preferred the DK2 one, so now I know I can change it too- cheers! +1

the top part of the CV1 sensor unscrews. ok it does not have a clip, but blutack saved the day for me, and i have stuck on the top of my tv pointing down at me.

Not true at all. To change the IPD for either the DK2 or the CV1 you have to hex edit 2 DLL files in the latest runtime as the native IPD settings do not work at all. On the CV1 all you have is lens separation, which although serves to make things comfortable, if you have an IPD higher or lower than the default setting, games will and do have the incorrect scale - Elite being among them.
