Tourism in a cutthroat galaxy?

Been thinking about the up-coming point release with Tourism. How exactly does that work in a "cutthroat galaxy" where the AI is being jacked up and interdictions are frequent (over 2-3 jumps)?

Weapons-carrying Orcas? "Don't 'splode me cause I am tourist"? I can't see tourism in a galaxy that is supposedly falling apart and filled with "cutthroat" ships and players. Maybe I'm wrong, but this seems to be a really weak and un-loreish path...

Tourists won't want to be caught up in conflict, piracy, chases, interdictions, explosions, etc. It's safe to say you will be trying to avoid those. Presumably "tourist" missions will not spawn hostile NPCs to chase you. (some other kinds of passenger missions obviously will) So, you'd plan "safest" routes to get to where you're going. Interdictions are unlikely on fairly safe routes when you aren't doing missions or carrying gold.

That's inside the Bubble. Outside the Bubble you don't have to worry about interdictions or NPCs.

Hey, I remember a couple years back when there was this thing in Egypt, where people were shooting in the streets, there were kidnappings and all sorts of nasty business, yet travel agencies didn't feel any reflux of customers. People are weird. ;)

Human's like drama, much like these forums.
And, on the positive side, dead humans can't whine.
If they live well, they had their little adrenalin rush so it's all good and everyone is happy.

However, their families might but that's what the small print is for...as in a well designed disclaimer.

Given the profitability of slaves, tourism ships would be a prime target for pirates and slavers. Not only that but one would imagine those pretty cabins would be worth salvaging. I can only hope that interdictions become very dependent on what type of system your traveling in based on state, security and economy so that ships transporting passengers, getting graded on flight safety, comfort and quality would be able to carefully plot safe, smooth routes to their destinations. The current way interdiction and security rating locations work really doesn't suit this kind of play though, so we'll see.

Am hoping they deal with this in the right way, I can understand freighters being targeted by pirates. Passenger ships with tourists should be fairly safe, Hopefully the combat interdiction side of things will only be linked to assassinations or kidnap attempts, perhaps helping a criminal to get somewhere remote whilst the cops hunt for him.

Leave the cruise liner stuff for serene voyages to interesting locations.

I know.. this game is so lifeless, soulless and murderous that its inconceivable that there would be tourism.

Personally the lack of life in this game could have been made so much more interesting with a wide variety of well written missions such as.

"Deliver this Puppy to my daughter in time for her birthday! - My work prevents me from getting back to my home world and she's been depressed i've not been around. If you deliver this puppy and not let it escape (or crap in your ship) in time there is a bonus at the end upon delivery"

Then you could have all sorts of dialogue at the end, and just randomize the outcomes. Like the stupid wedding barge but add a procedural touch to it all so that there are some interesting, funny and unexpected stories to tell.

That is why this game lacks life. Deliver X to Y .. Kill these guys.. source this material.

Are there no real stories in this galaxy?

There is already a wonderful statue in every stone. It just waits for an open mind to see through the surrounding rock and set it free.

Tourism is probably going to be around the edges of the bubble, or outside of it, where there are no enemies. I haven't been out there so I can't vouch if they're out there or not.

However, my suspicion is that terrorism will become a mission reward, much like bounty hunting is. The aim won't be to kill the tourists but to scare the pants off them.. ie. reduce the ship's hull to below 70%. The person doing the tourist mission then gets less reward for their efforts, or something like that.

I don't understand the concept of tourism in the ED universe honestly. What's the point? Instead of delivering boom cargo, it's tourists? OOOhhhhh, AAaaaaahhh.....

Well, that's the thing. We all hope Frontier is going to come up with "something more than that" :D

It kind of just sounds like an excuse to give the Orca (and other new ships) some purpose rather than a well thought out idea. It will be interesting to see how it gets implemented. I think they'll have to let you use a company ship for the missions. I can't imagine too many people wanting to pay $48m + Outfitting for an Orca just so they can ferry tourists around the place.

There'll probably be passenger internals. Might be a case of more money if a player owns an Orca. The passenger side of things may not just be about A to B, or C, just a part of it but also about how a player does it. Better quality of experience for the passengers (this could involve types & quality of food / drink...Lavian Brandy maybe as well), the more money you can make.

There could also, for example, be different qualities of internal (like 1st class against very basic) which could also increase a player's revenue. Money + rep as a successful tour operator could be a way to go before such things get unlocked although most will want it yesterday, as per usual.

There could also be other things like surface missions if a new, passenger friendly SUV is added where volcanism could be watched from, same with barnacles or whatever else might be added. Persistent things basically.

What I'm saying is getting somewhere is only part of the job, as a tour operator. Getting to certain sites as such on certain planets could also be a thing. It may even open the door to some hand crafted sights, even something that looks like ruins of an ancient civilization or from space, something like the face on Mars thing. Also, good horizon pics, in keeping with the game.

Some of this may not come till later but could be something for the future. I'd expect the first rendition to be the basics though. How the game evolves.

Just more sensible thoughts than my previous post
:)

I hope there will be pirates attacking tourists ships. Especially luxurious ones with rich nobility. Boarding it, stealing gold and the ladies' jewelry. Imagine all the money you can gain from robbing Fhloston Paradise!

I picture it (somehow) like this:

Well, the last part is optional if nobody plays hero.

I don't know what ya'll are whining about. Have you seen the beluga? I thought cutter was stunning. And it is.

But hold me back if the Beluga looks anything like the last time devs hinted at the design. I'll mod that sexy beast until it hurts then trundle about the galaxy as the eccentric (in game) billionaire that I am. With or without paying passengers. :)

Side note: the dimensions and basic shape fits within the anaconda footprint (right down to the giant engines dangling out the back, and the viewing platform in the nose) but the fins will mean it'll be a bit of a squeeze through the mail slot as it'll probably be as wide as cutter and taller than mighty 'conda.

The only shame will be as it's built by Saud "tiny fsd" Kruger it'll have the jump range of a an actual brick. Which would be a bit unfortunate for those long cruises. Don't let me down, Sandro! Let's get some of the boffins at Lakon on loan to SK so they can learn how to build a real FSD. ;)

Nice ideas there!

hmmm, maybe besides the Orca, Dolphin & Beluga, cut-rate tourist-traps would send you on/in a Type-9, drop you off 200km from the good hotels & provide you with Evacuation Shelters (my travel experience, trying to go cheap).

ya, she's a beauty alright. I tried numerous times to kit out an Orca for anything besides tourism, just because she's so pretty.

The Little Green Men are coming. There be turmoil and impending war. Let's all pack our sandals, socks, and DSLRs!

Makes perfect sense to me.
