Tourism in a cutthroat galaxy?

The Little Green Men are coming. There be turmoil and impending war. Let's all pack our sandals, socks, and DSLRs!

Makes perfect sense to me.

.. why assume the big bad will be near the bubble? See this is the problem with sweeping assumptions and eye rolling:

a) you can be wrong, and
b) please put your eyes back in your skull because hoooo-boy is that creepy.

If it's anything to do with the locked out regions, the middle of the bubble is going to be quite the rare event.

There'll probably be passenger internals. Might be a case of more money if a player owns an Orca. <snip>

The internals in other ships would work purely from a game perspective but unless the other ships get totally redesigned the passengers won't see anything. I realise it's just a game but it would nice if it makes sense. I suppose you can have passenger missions that are more like a taxi ride from A to B than a sight seeing trip.

Oh no... I just thought of something horrible... now the passengers are going to fit into the "change my destination during the mission" or "get me there quicker and I'll pay you more money" mechanic that was recently introduced

Well, since the game seems to be going down a path of certain ships for specific roles, there may only be a few viable option. Orca being one, Beluga being another mentioned in the game files and the Dolphin is an underwater thing so options there as well.
I don't think it would work in the way you're suggesting though regards the chat.Passengers pay up front for a tour, period. No changing destinations unless offered a very large amount of credits and there would be no guarantee you would even be doing something that wouldn't bite you in the ass. Only a very foolish CMDR might do such a thing as to detour, risking payment or legal repercussions (rep damage), usually from the noisy end of a Railgun or something similar.
That is unless they are unscrupulous and up to no good. Maybe faction standing could work with that where is allied with slave trading scum, then they work with you to make slaves of the tourists or something like that. If you're only friendly with them then there could be trouble.

It's quite possible that some messages might flag up with a mini-crisis or something like that though. Sightseeing could involve allowing passenger to take footage by flying steadily over an area where they always have a line of sight, or something completely different.
I dunno, but there's plenty of ways to make things work.
I'm just throwing things out there.

Imagine the possibilities!!! It will be like a safari!

Yeah... but without the animals. That rock over there looks exciting! Didn't we just pass that rock? Look, that sentry from the base is shooting at us!

Unless they get around to us being able to land on planets (not just moons) by then. That sounds like heck of a lot of work to get right, though. I suspect it will be much later rather than sooner.

What I would like to see is a percentage option added to wings so that when a tourism mission or any dangerous mission could be done and wingmen could get paid.

OK, Colonel Kenney is complaining again. Does today have a "y" in it? Yep....well that explains it then. Personally, given his clear antipathy for the game, I reall have to ask why he is even still here.

I don't understand the concept of tourism in the ED universe honestly. What's the point? Instead of delivering boom cargo, it's tourists? OOOhhhhh, AAaaaaahhh.....

If that is all it was ever going to be, then they would have brought it out before now. That suggests that they have something more involved in mind.

Nice ideas there!

hmmm, maybe besides the Orca, Dolphin & Beluga, cut-rate tourist-traps would send you on/in a Type-9, drop you off 200km from the good hotels & provide you with Evacuation Shelters (my travel experience, trying to go cheap).

That's interesting in the way there's cheap flights these days. It's kinda cramped, not the best experience ever and has some entertainment but it basically get you from A to B...to your destination. That could be the starting option for tour operators.
This could introduce pleasure ports, not the naughty ones because of the age rating probably, but just systems that at known for such things (like Risa in Star Trek).
The higher you get your rep up, the better the jobs...maybe a reduction on ship price if your standing is excellent, maybe cost more if of low standing.

If I was to do such a horrible thing, I wouldn't even bother with the Evacuation Shelters, I'd just space them, then look for this centuries KFC...since humans taste like chicken, or so I hear. Space Banana's do know how to troll humanity.
;)
I went to Butlins a long time ago, 'nuff said and I didn't go back.

Hey, I remember a couple years back when there was this thing in Egypt, where people were shooting in the streets, there were kidnappings and all sorts of nasty business, yet travel agencies didn't feel any reflux of customers. People are weird. ;)

^^^This. Had friends visiting Egypt during all the recent issues in that area. Blew me away, man.

I really admire your enthusiasm for this subject, banana, but I actually think the implementation is going to be a lot simpler. Remember that there has to be a way of measuring what you do and the more complex it is, the more likely it will be bugged. My personal view is that they will build on the current mission mechanic they already have and adapt it for passengers. Like you, I'm hoping there will be more to it than that but I'm not certain that will be the case.

Well, I'm just gonna keep on throwing out ideas when I'm feeling a bit creative. Banana's are full of potassium after all.
:)

Are there no real stories in this galaxy?

Exactly ... there are no real stories in ED.
Because all playable "content" in ED is just based on PG/RNG and this concept doesn't support any form of story telling at all ... lifeless at its best IMHO!

I'd love that to happen as well tbh.
I'd so much be into ferrying pioneering type folk to places and then support and nurture them as a means to create stuff. I don't even care about ownership, just being part of the creation of such things would be great.

LOVE this idea! More interesting to me than PowerPlay. Reminds me of an old game, Outpost, and quite a few others, like Haegemonia or Master Of Orion. I'd like to nurture a colony from its first landings to a bustling world, of which I would get a cut of the gross profits, naturally :D

Well, I guess that's what the forums are for. Certainly beats complaining... [smile]

Certainly does! I wonder if a single thread anywhere does not devolve into throwing mud clods at FD. That's all I'm going to say about it.

Hey Banana - keep those ideas coming!
