Best way to take screenshots?

I am on my way towards a nice nebula and I want to take screenshots of my journey. Is there a better way than windows key + Printscreen? I play VR only with the vive.

On a PC with 'normal' display, you have can take high and low quality screenies - F10 for low quality, Alt-F10 for high quality (NB: this applies if playing in Private Group or, I believe, Solo. I think Open only gives access to low quality - may be the other way round ;) )

Edit: may want to look at ScreenShot Changer which now parses ED logs and saves files as name of current system rather than just IMGblahblah. Also allows you to select output format...

Do you play ED through Steam? You can press F12 in steam to automatically take a screenshot. This is also how you recenter the position of your VR HMD so you will either want to remap that in ED or in steam change the key to something other than F12. I think I have my screenshot on F12 and my reset position on F11. I have voiceattack handle taking the sceenshots for me so I don't have to take my hands off the HOTAS.

Also keep in mind that the screens shots will be of what is mirrored on the desktop. On VR devices, normally the mirrored window on the desktop is running at a fairly low resolution. You will have to try to increase the resolution if you want nice screenshots but that will come at some performance costs.

Thanks. Yeah taking screenshots works. Actually using F10 to make built in SS by ED works too. Now all i have to do is crank up the resolution of what is shown on the display. These 1280 shots are too low res. I just arrived at NC 17... something nebula. The view is fantastic. I need to take some proper Screenshots. Not willing to play out of VR though. :)

That is what alt-f10 is for, (tie it to a macro in voice attack or whatever)
This is special screenshot I think it texture and a few other settings to max and supersamples to 4x and saves as a completely uncompressed BMP file.

Only works in solo or group modes though.

I tried that. I have no huge BMPs anywhere though. Played in Mobius group, Will try in solo mode next.

Bit of a misnomer to call it 'low quality' screenshots with F10, they are the same quality as what you view, alt+f10 are double size, so if you are playing in 1080p you get 4k e.t.c.
So yeah, its normal quality not low.

Kind of. With respect to VR and resolution, the screenshot is only capturing what is mirrored on to your monitor. So the VR headset is by default running a higher resolution than the mirrored screen on the desktop. You should be able to bump up the resolution for the mirrored screen but it is just at the cost of performance in VR.

Yeah i will do that. Out there exploring i got performance to spare. I am running VR High with SteamVR Supersampling at 1.8. I could go down to 1.6 without much optical difference and render a bigger screen on the display for better screenshots. I will try that tonight.

I have a VoiceAttack macro that goes off when I say "screenshot". VA uses the key combo then says "Screenshot taken" in my headset

The problem really is when playing VR i think.
Look how bad the quality is. It is not renderd like that on my Vive nor on my main screen.
If i try a HQ screen by using ALT+F10 the game simply crashes.

The Hi-Res screen shots are a double image anyway of the view through each lens. The regular screen shot is of what you have your mirrored screen on the desktop set as. Obviously you'll have that set to something low by default like 1280x768 to help with the game's performance. So you will get a low res screen shot.

Normal screen shot taken in VR. It's low res because it's done from the desktop window resolution which is low.

Hi Res screen shot taken in VR. (Note: I have saved this down as a jpeg to reduce the file size). Better resolution but double vision.

At the moment if you want to take beautiful screen shots like you used to, then you are going to have to switch back to regular 2D to do so I'm afraid.

The problem is not the desktop resolution. You can change that. I upped that to 3440x1440 and it does take screens in that resolution. The screens are horribly aliased. The VR picture is getting supersampled, the desktop screen does not.
(See my screenshot above).
