Galactic Heritage Sites - naming the galaxy one system at a time

One of the most exciting things to me in the 2.1 release was something that barely gets a mention: Frontier Developments recognized the tremendous efforts and contributions to the game made by the explorer community and renamed "Beagle Point" to actually be "Beagle Point" in the game.

To me, when Frontier did this, they recognized just how important this system was to the overall community. Thank you Frontier!

I'd like to propose that we don't stop there. Frontier doesn't owe this to us but there are several other systems around the Galaxy that deserve recognition. Lets come up with a short list, maybe half a dozen systems, that we consider to be 'important enough' to deserve something more than a procedurally generated name. Once we've narrowed down the list we'll provide it to Frontier, asking nicely if they would consider renaming the systems for the 2.2 release. If Frontier like the idea and are willing to go along with us maybe we can make this an ongoing activity prior to each major revision of Elite: Dangerous.

Places like 'Planet Wilson' that have captured the imagination of the community or been featured in the Newsletter should be easy to find in the galaxy map simply by searching for 'Wilson'.

Policing the list by limiting it to six or so systems per release also keeps us as a community from abusing Frontier's good graces. They'll be much more likely to respond to renaming a limited number of systems then if we provided them with a massive 100+ list.

Thoughts?

I fully support this.
I was not part of the Distant Worlds Expedition. The only reason I have Beagle Point on my "places to visit" list is because it's now named and I can referance points of interest - it's not just another bunch of rocks in space.

I just finished visiting Beagle. I sat on the fence deciding whether or not to join DW just a little to long and missed the cutoff for the Fleet Roster by just minutes.

Still ... being able to locate Beagle Point by simply typing 'Beagle Point' into the galaxy map made my journey there SO much nicer.

The galactic mapping project was set up exactly for this reason - to encourage FD to add some character to the Galaxy by adopting some of the system names and region names that have been submitted by the community since February 2015. The project tells the history of exploration as I've tried to add all significant info from hundreds of players' adventures over the last 18 months. Expeditions, individual travel diaries, video series, and even roleplayed events... Data from all these kinds of player created events has been recorded and an obscene amount of hours has gone into the project since its inception.

The project has never been recognised by FD. Never even received a single dev comment. One of the reasons I've been told is that FD have to be careful with how they handle the renaming of places in the game because during the Kickstarter a lot of people paid a lot of money to name stuff. If FD begin naming stuff now, it could bring them a lot of unneeded flak from those early backers.

It took an expedtion the size of Distant Worlds, and the amount of interest it generated in game and out, to warrant a name change of Beagle Point, so I suspect for other player submitted names, a similar amount of effort would be needed.

Its also been rumoured that FD will reopen the naming of things in game at a real life monetary price, so again that's another reason why the mapping project and ideas of players asking for name changes may not be well received by FD.

I would love it if FD did allow naming rights to places, even via a nominal fee, and vetted the names to keep within the spirit of the game, as one thing the Galaxy needs is some cool names beyond the bubble - be them regions, POIs, famous systems, worlds etc. The procedural names are uninspiring and difficult to tell a good old fashioned adventures' story over of what may have happened there.

Just watched yesterdays Lavecon livesteam. MB mentioned that they may introduce some of the more historical locations in the game - possibly some will include community submitted names afterall ;)

I'd love it if FD did use the Galactic Mapping Projects work to define the new names of systems in the game.
It would bring more life to the map as a whole, not just the individualy named systems.

That would be awesome. The Galaxy could use a bit more character beyond the procedurally generated names like "BREXIT POO AE-16 FU-12" and such.

On a side note, wouldn't it be awesome to start renaming the prefixes of whole regions so you'd see systems like "WAYFARERS GRAVEYARD NX-01 AA-09"?

Errrrr, no. The PG naming system gives us insights in how the Stellar Forge works and other stuff.
