Anyone else slightly nervous?

I'm really looking forward to it. I hope that people can get past their worries and enjoy the multiplayer game.

I think it's important to keep in mind why you're playing online. Maybe it's to have fun with a RL friend or two. Maybe it's to dogfight with human opponents. May it's to find like mined people to explore the galaxy with. Or maybe it's something else entirely.

But it's probably not to try to avoid contact with other human beings. If it was you would be in single player mode it a private group.

But you chose multiplayer, because playing with others can add something to your game. So don't fret about how all sorts of people you don't know are trying to ruin your day. Instead, do the things you enjoy with the people who make your day better.

Yes, sometimes bad things might happen. Someone might shoot you down. Bad things can happen anywhere - a bug or glitch might kill you, a power cut might destroy your save. Men in black might kidnap you. They might happen, but unless you're stubbornly refusing to take account of what other people might do (while expecting them to take account of what you want to do), it won't be bad. You will gain much more than you lose.

1st: your not as good as you think you are. Prepared to be owned. A LOT.
2nd: have fun lol

It's my first networked multiplayer game (don't think it really fits being called a MMO) other than over LAN, and in addition to frothing anticipation of the premium beta I'm not really sure how to behave, or how I expect other people to behave. It makes it all doubly exciting as well as making be a bit nervous, as though I'm suddenly going to have an audience.

I shall be going in with some trepidation. Who knows, though, I may find myself wildly attacking anyone who comes near me and then sulking about PvP on the forums afterwards.

Well, not realy, because this releasse is FAR from feature complete or in a propper playable state. Of course, you do some trading and shoot ships in encounters, but there is sooo much missing...

Of course i am eager to take a deep look, but i know that there is not that much fun in this early stage.

I am only expecting 2 or 3 hours of "take a look here and check out", not an immersive trip for days or weeks.

true, i don't expect it to suck me in.
but there are many things to learn for me. i never docked, i never scooped up something, never equipped a ship, never traded, don't know the newer NPC AI, never flew something else than a sidewinder...that would make more than two or three hours i think.
And THEN i might get time to actually TEST something :D

My opinion of how good I am has taken a sharp dive since the alpha 1.1 single player missions were made available to premium backers, so if I did end up as good as I think I am I think I could retire happy and wear a permanent smile.

really don't know how good i'll be doing.

never did the 1.1 "incursion" in less than 11 minutes. ;)
but that is no real test of flying skill, just a result of watching the AI and learn how to beat them. I'm just good at understanding game mechanics.
another player will not give me time to study him, there is no "restart scenario" option...so i'll be toast most likely :D

Beta is ideal for people who haven't played multiplayer games before since we're all pretty much noobs in this gameworld together, all on an equal footing with everyone else whose jumping aboard on Friday. People will mess docking up, collide with each other, slam into asteroids etc, but no one will care because we're all in the same boat.

The first few days of a new MP game are often the most hilarious you'll ever have and will definitely be the ones you remember the most in years to come. I still remember my first tentative steps in UO, WoW, and Eve, and the stupid things we did at times :D

There is nothing to lose in a beta - anything you acquire will be wiped sooner or later. There are no reputations to protect. No one cares about their pixels (or at least they shouldn't), and you only get one shot at it - once beta is over and gamma kicks in then people may start to take things a little more seriously. So in the meantime I say just go and embrace the beta MP experience and don't worry about screwing up and don't shy away from interacting with others... you may enjoy it!

Don't forget that NPC encounters will be one-offs too. There'll be very little chance to work out which ship to take out as a first priority or which ones can safely be ignored till later in the skirmish.

I didn't forget this.
But i'm with Manfred von Richthofen on this one: "i only attack, when i have a chance to win."

Beta.. and not even a real beta as its Premium beta (which to me is Beta lite, or just a Alpha extension)

I will be looking for Bugs and Exploits.

I will Kick Elite in the nadds and watch it writhe on the ground then i'll place my (virtual) foot on its throat and grind it.

i'll find the part of Elite that is the Proverbial "Baby with a lollypop", then i'll take it away.

i'll throw a Molotov through the front window of Elites house and roast marshmallows in the flames.

then i'll file my bug and exploit reports and sit back and watch as David and his fantastic crew go about rebuilding, fortifying, and educating Elite into a better, more robust and fulfilling game.

Yes I'm nervous because I normally suck at any sort of PvP (apart from the fleeting moment of brilliance in CS) but the temptation of a modern Elite was just too much to pass up.

Please don't worry. I am useless too, and roughly half of all the pilots will be worse than average ;)

There are, as some old chap once said in a film, alternatives to fighting.

As a public service to any other old-timers who remember the original Elite and have never dipped their toes into the murky waters of online multi-player games, here's a good example of the level of intellectual behaviour and communication you can look forward to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwsyZdCq2_I
