I sort of get it, regardless of how many responsible gun owners that are, anyone, can basically have a gun, it is so very very easy to get in the US, so the police work from that assumption, that the person is most likely then not to have a gun. So they are scared for their life in most confrontations they end up in, they have a gun, they shoot so they themselves don't get shot..
And yeah, there are those that go "gun control doesn't work", tell that to Australia? works there just fine, the reason it doesn't work in individual locations that has it, is because it is only in select locations, so people can easily get guns from elsewhere, if the whole country had it, then it would be another thing...
Note, I am as a note, not against people owning guns, but there's a limit in my book, why would you need more then a shotgun for home defence? rifle for hunting? sure, but I see absolutely no reason why you would need any more then that, especially not assault weapons, automatic weapons, armour piercing ammo? why?
It's not hunting, it's not protection, it's something else. And I will admit to this.
But first, let me ask a question - do you like football? I really hate it. What about cowboy night at the pub? That's not for me either.
If I won a bit lottery jackpot I'd do my best to get this:

I'd buy a big house, have it brought to said house (with a suitable equipped garage), and spend most of my time fixing it up. It'd be an awesome project. And how much better after it was built! I'd be able to sit in the turret making pew-pew-pew noises and maybe I'd even pay the neighbours kids to throw stones at it while I was inside to mimic the sounds of bullets bouncing off it! A proper T-34-85, the war winner. They used to have a classic T-34 with the diamond turret but it's gone now (I need to buy more lottery tickets!)
They'll never run out of T-72s though.

There are so many of those things built, but they are supposed to be an absolute to drive.
But this does raise an interesting question - am I allowed a tank?
So although I'm not really into guns I do get it. For certain types of people there is a massive allure in weaponry. Kings and moguls throughout history have made private museums of weapons and suchlike, whether guns, knives, swords, or even aircraft and tanks. There is something really... sexy... about having such things in your possession. Maybe it harkens back to our primal beginnings. The tribe with the most power, the most strength, would have the biggest success and have the most breeding rights...
This is the why, before anyone clicks and claims I am supporting gun ownership, read the rest of the post...
The thing is this - guns are a bit of a no go. As fun as it might be to own one, and as good as it might feel to hold an AK-47 and realize you're holding an intricate yet simple device of ultimate carnage it's just way way too risky for the general public. An AK fires a hot shard of metal at over 700 meters per second. NATO weapons (with the smaller 5.56 round) fire their little shards of metal at even higher speeds. And when those pieces of metal contact human flesh they do absolutely terrible damage.
They're supposed to.
The thing is, it is deceptively easy to destroy life with a gun. Indeed that is the purpose, the reason for their existence.
If I owned a tank,
without shells, I might well be able to do some damage with it if I snap and go on a rampage. I could squish a few unlucky souls too slow to get out of the way. I could knock down a few buildings. I could go grand theft auto on several streets worth of lamp posts and traffic lights. I could be live on the news.
But with a gun, and a bag of clips, someone can very easily go into a crowded train station, or shopping center, or school, and before anyone had time to react snatch the lives of dozens of people in minutes. Guns are designed for that very purpose - to kill people up close and personal with speed and efficiency - nothing else is.
To allow such devices to be owned by the public is sheer madness. Not only has it turned the USA into a warzone, but it is has reduced their police force to military occupiers rather than civic servants and defenders of the public good. Because of the guns there the police NEED to be armed. But as soon as a copper takes out his gun he can either shoot, or not shoot. The situation he faces isn't one of "will I get a good kicking?" or "can I talk to this guy?" or "will back up arrive?". It's a simple binary choice, in which he or she has to choose whether or not to take a life. And when this happens with such enormous frequency (whenever a police are called to an incident) innocent lives will be taken.
But still, I want to know, can I have a tank?
