The Star Citizen Thread

Personally I think it's a good thing to have the responsibility and the transparency to make a call like that especially in light of how it would've been nice for them to have slipped one in before the ED open beta. C'est la vie in the game production world.

As an aside, how cool is it to see the development process, understand the foibles of issues and bugs and not just have - yep it's coming 'soon'?

That is one of many reasons I don't give them a dime until there are some actual decent results.

90% of SC is and talk of things that could and might be.

Upsets me the game looks like it is pay to win.

Throw money at them to unlock ships I cant make much use of for a good year or more? I dont think so.

On the bright side, their news and announcements always make me happy I have been putting my money into other games and projects.

Greetings Citizens,

The team has been working around the clock for the past two weeks to polish gameplay and eliminate the bugs that would allow us to release Arena Commander V0.8. Today at 4:00 PM PST, I sat down with Star Citizen’s production leads for a ‘go/no-go’ meeting. We went around the virtual table, like a ground control team preparing to launch a rocket, and the decision was that we are not able to release Arena Commander tomorrow as there are too many blocking and critical issues outstanding.

Below you will find a list of the current bugs being tracked by the team. Game developers classify bugs based on their severity: blockers, critical, major, moderate and minor. The most serious of these, blockers, are bugs that completely prevent the game from working and from being in a releasable state. Unfortunately, as of tonight, there are still two blockers and half a dozen critical issues (which we would like to fix before launch.) Our biggest issue today is a newly developed DirectX crash which breaks the single player Vanduul Swarm mode every backer will be given access to.

It would be foolish to release an unstable build, even if pre-alpha for the sake of meeting an internal deadline. This is the power of the crowdfunding that made Star Citizen possible: a publisher would make us ship tomorrow regardless of the current build quality… but as you are all focused on quality rather than a financial return for shareholders we are able to take a few more days to deliver something that is stable.

I know that’s not the news you wanted to hear tonight. No-one would like to see the community get their hands on Arena Commander more than I would.

This is what can happen with an open development process, especially when we are sharing code and content long before one normally would in traditional development. But I don’t think you would want it any other way! The Star Citizen team feeds off of your incredible enthusiasm and your energy for the project… and we want more than anything to see what happens when you get into space.

In order to keep our backers as informed as possible, I’m asking the production team to provide DAILY updates for the community until Arena Commander V0.8 ships. This will be the raw stuff: lists of bugs and other information to tell you the current health of the build. You will see the same information I do, and you will be able to follow as we resolve each “blocker” preventing the build’s release.

I want you to know that we’re very close… just not close enough to launch tomorrow. Stay tuned!

— Chris Roberts

TBH I don't think that anyone's really surprised.....

I looked at SC briefly, but I have never been a big fan of the cartoon-ish aspects of the WC franchise. More power to them, but my money goes to Frontier.

Can I ask you what do you expect?

CIG is a newly formed studio that is still adding on personnel and finding out what works for them and what does not. People keep forgetting that CIG is not Frontier Development that has been around for the past 20 years that has a lot of their communication and kinks solved, FD already knows what works for them and what does not. Frontier has also not had to build an entire studio up from the ground as they are trying to develop a game. I don't know about you, but that is a pretty large under taking.

While it sucks that there are delays, it's a good learning experience for CIG and hopefully it makes them grow in a better way. I pledged for SC because I love CR games, I wanted him to make a game he wants to make without having to deal with publishers and them pushing for content to release in buggy and unplayable states.

At the end of the day it all comes down to patience. How many years have Elite fans waited for another game? Has it been 15-20 years? When was it the last time developers decided to make a Space Ship game? Has it been 13+ years? What does a few months or even days make a difference in comparison?

One of the big problems I see with Star Citizen is the still on going feature creep. They are still in funding mode, and still setting funding goals.

That's gotta stop. They have to step up and say "OK, keep giving us money, now it's profit for us. No more features are going to be added".

They have the money now. Excellent. Now make the game.

I'm looking forward to S.C. But Elite more so.

SC has a very unfocused feel to it. The whole project seems too big and unwieldy. I wish them the best but in my opinion they need to cut out some fat and simplify.

I think it would be prudent for them to only give deadlines by quarter... Never by specific dates until the content they want to release to their backers is ready. I am imagining a lot of frustration coming from the SC community at this point. They should try a different approach in regards to when their content will be delivered. It makes it more frustrating to the backers as other than the hanger module, they don't have anything to "test" at this point. I think both Chris and the SC community are learning valuable lessons about communication and expectations at this point...

But as the previous poster said, they may have members who are quite experienced in the industry but as a studio they are newly formed with a really ambitious project on their plate.

Well if you look at their stretch goals, none of them have been feature creep since the $23 million goal, that was the amount CR needed to make SC the game as he wanted. Not sure if you were around since the initial pledging started, but they only expected to raise $2-4 million in public funding and get $8 million from investors. They were initially going to release a stripped down game and after they release it they were going to build upon it with features as they get more money, i.e. the difference between $23 million and $12 million they had in funding. But then they got fully funded and instead of a stripped down game, it became a feature full release game.

It remains to be seen if them writing their own back end code from start will delay the overall game or if it just delayed the DFM module. But time will tell once they have to deliver SQ 42 in 2015 as well as the PU.

I'm still trying to find out what part of DirectX was updated to cause the reported bug.

I haven't seen anything on MSDN. Any ideas?

There has been no DirectX update, he said "newly developed DirectX crash" meaning that for some reason there is a conflict with DirectX and they are not sure where and why.

Man... what would make me mad is that they waited to announce the delay till just a few hours before its release.

Holy geez, can you imagine? You put in an incredible amount of money, got to walk around a hanger looking at your ship, and hours before you were told you'd get to go flying... Nope!

It would be like if they told me, tomorrow around this time, that I wouldn't be able to participate in beta.................

OH GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won't be disappointed if AC is delayed. The problem that concerns me most is that there won't be control settings setup in-game and presumably no TrackIR support.
