But I'm quite amazed that you apparently did not see this unhappiness come, from light-years away.
Issues with what is commonly referred to as "mindless grinding", has been complained about as long as I have been around and longer.
Look at, for example, PowerPlay.
How can you NOT have seen this coming?
Think the mods need to close this thread. By page 3 it has descended into "game is Grinch for may or may not be listening". There does not seem to be discussion of the wider reason why the forums are depressing opened by the OP.

My sentiment Exactly!! I came to this game quite late June 2015, not sure how i missed it up till then, but in 13 and a bit months i have clocked up 1700 hours have 2 accounts and have simply not even looked at another game, let alone played another game. I love it to bits. I spend a huge amount of my working day investigating the evenings play, where to go, what to do, where to find it etc.
This forum helps me a lot and i thank all cmdrs for this help. I tend to ignore the edjits on here and you can spot them a mile off. Long may this game reign, but hopefully as Breet C has said things are being read at HQ and hopefully our beautiful game will flourish and prosper.

Where was love, when they implemented CGs, that is totally unrealistic. Gold rush in wild west is not a competition about who delivers most gold to get the reward. CGs are arbitrary game design decision, that goes super easy on developers.
Where was love, when they implemented BGS? Where is realism in dumpling unlimited amounts of goods on even very small systems, where is realism regarding rare goods?
Where was love, when designing system wide communication. Game reason to not to broadcast prices etc? That is not love of the game, that is making decisions to force players go thru the hoops to make the game seem longer.
Where was love, when it was decided, that ships spawn next to you and do not follow wake/range rules?
Where was love, when engineers were decided without storage and with senseless rng?
I certainly feel that people who designed ships cared. I certainly hear the passion in the rumblings of different ship engines. I do not sense it in any way, when i play the game. When i go exploring and it gets so repetitive. Planets and suns and nebulae are nice, game design around exploration has no love whatsoever. Only tired "get it done quick, making it great is not important".

Forum has as many entertaining threads as it has boring for tat threads...although the sarcasm is fun to read through. I play in solo only while I'm in the bubble and in open when exploring far away from other players means the forum is the only place where I can chat to other players. Take the rough with the smooth...makes the forum interesting and entertaining at times ^^

I think FD saw the unhappiness with grind coming. That's why they hid the grind from the Engineers beta.

Forums took many steps to worse after Frontier stopped releasing dev updates. Before we got new topic every week maybe twice a week because newsletter also had something new. Now we haven't heard or got anything new to talk about since 2.1 launched. No news. Also updates have slowdown. I know that making changes take time but still 2 months is enough time to re do/add some stuff that is currently needed if you look at other games. Some games get contend updates every week that add more in 6 months to game than frontier added with 2.1. And there have been only 3 bug fix patches and couple server side changes to 2.1. Then add to that that some stuff that need changes and devs have said that we will get changes on those and in more than year no changes.
Also many recent community goals have had problems because BGS or frontier changed rules middle/during the CG or drama that have made many sides angry and stuff like not able to oppose cg that they don't want to succeed etc.
Its not because x or y reason its sum of a lot of things that have happened since offline mode promise was removed to 2.1 release. There is a lot of stuff that have made people argue and most of those haven't been solved like combat logging, crime&punishment system, piracy , powerplay etc.

i start reading the thread for this post, i don't get why you want to ban people from the forum, if you don't like somebody's posts then just ignore them.
Sigh....we are all entitled to have different opinions, if you disagree with somebodies opinion then just accept that they have a different view. Banning is just wrong, unless rules have been broken.
Wow! People like me should be banned? Is that for making poor attempts at humour? Or something else? Care to define the brackets by which people fall into your proposed category, so we can better understand your thinking on this one?

NeilF some people are just sad and angry, there's nothing rationnal in them, they just hate people so they can stop hating themselves for a minute, don't take it personally just avoid them.

Yes, ban NeilF (who I often disagree with) because he makes constructive arguments for things he wants to see changed/improved in the game, lets have more of this kind of content on the forums! Please can we have more: "Make the grind more fun" (note the lack of constructive suggestion) "Make the grind go away" (note the lack of constructive suggestion) "Ban these guys that disagree with me" (note the lack of constructive suggestion) "Kick all the solo players out" (note the lack of constructive suggestion)...okay, I think that should be enough. We don't need to check your post history, we have a live stream of content coming from you that provides ample evidence of the kind of place you'd have this be.
